Has anyone ever had a lost or stolen check?

This is such a dumb question, but I'm a bit upset....

I wrote a check last month to pay for my children's tuition... I mailed the check on November 17th.... turns out they NEVER received the check & now they are billing us with interest, plus this months tuition is due...

I've called the bank, the check never cleared, so I cancelled it & told the school that should they receive it, don't cash it, as it will obviously not go through... I was planning to go to the school tomorrow, so I'm just going to stop by the bank to get a money order on my way to the school... no problem EXCEPT they're charging me fifty dollars in interest AND I have to pay 25.00 for the stop payment.... WHAT can you do? It is what it is, I can't change the fact the check is obviously lost....

HERE is what I am worried about, does some crazy person out there have my check? Was it stolen by someone somewhere between here and the school? I worry about this, because now the person knows our bank account number & our names... I very much worry about identity theft....

Has anyone ever had a check stolen or lost & did you cancel your account as a result or anything else? I'm quite upset as you can probably tell

I have had lost checks and I will tell you not to worry about it too much. You've done all you can control and the rest is out of your control now. I would not close your account, that's a bit extreme. Chances are that the check went awry at the post office and it will either never turn up or appear either at your house or at the school. It's also possible it arrived at the school and was lost there. If you have a good payment history with the school, I would ask them to waive the fee. I can't believe they wouldn't, and $50 interest is a lot of interest for something which at this point would not even be 30 days past due.

I do on-line bill pay and back in October I paid the dentist and they never got the check. (When its someone like the dentist, the bank mails them a check) I didn't know until I got a bill from the dentist the next month. I called the dentist and was told they didn't get a check. I called the bank and they told me that the check was sent on the day I sent it, but it had never been cashed. They just stopped payment on the check and reissued it. It happens sometimes. I wouldn't worry about too much about it. It may turn up at a latter date because of a post office mix-up. I doubt its any kind of theft. Good luck!

I've put 2 stop-payments on 2 different checks in the last 18 months. Neither ever got found. The bank shouldn't put through a check w/ a stop-payment.

I wouldn't worry about it.

But what I did do about 3 years ago I changed the name of my checks to our initials. Ex. John Smith, to J. Smith. So if it ever did get stolen, that person doesn't know our full name or street address.


About 6 years ago a Visa card bank never received our check until 3 weeks later I mailed it. Stuck in the postal service I guess. The bank cleared out the interest as well.
