We are considering flying home first class with Virgin or BA and would love to hear from anyone who has done either or both!!!
Was it worth the money, how do they compare, which has the better seats and food, any perks worth knowing about?!! How much better than premium economy?!!
Help!!

Hi. We have been lucky enough to fly both Premium Economy with Virgin and First Class (again with Virgin). We paid for the PE but got upgraded twice to First (not sure how, but we had no kids with us so that probably helped)! To be honest, I would pay for Premium every time, especially if you can get upstairs seating. Loads of legroom and storage bins to the side of the seats (very handy). The seating is better in first class but to be honest for that sort of money I don't think they are worth it, they extend somewhat but not completely flat (unless they have been upgraded). I found the PE seating just as comfortable. The main difference with the food is (again not sure if it's changed in the last 18 months) - it was what you want, when you want it. Nice to eat when you want rather than when they want you to. Nice food but then again not worth the huge extra expense. Just my opinion but may help. Go for PE.

We've also been upgraded a few times from Virgin PE to Upper Class, but not since the new suites were introduced. As a free upgrade it's fantastic, but I'm not sure I could justify the expense (although we have looked into it a few times). If money is no object (or someone else is paying :teeth: ) it's a no-brainer, but I guess not many of us are in that position.

Not with BA or Virgin but we have flown Business First with Continental...it was fabulous. Silver service, freshly baked breads and cookies and room to really stretch out. Is it worth the money? Well if you can afford it without a thinking about it then yes but if you have to think about it then probably no.

I travelled Virgin Upper Class (which is business class, not first class - Virgin don't have first class) to California last September and it is fantastic. The main point is that it is the whole experience with Virgin; not just the flight. Limo from home to airport, priority check-in (in the limo - drive through). Fasttrack through security to the Virgin Clubhouse where there is free food/drinks/ showers/beauty treatments etc. Priority boarding. Fantastic in-flight service; food is plated up and served with tablecloth etc - not thrown at you in a plastic tray. We had the new suites which convert to a 6'6" flat bed. In flight massage. On board bar. Priority disembarkation. Priority luggage handling. And on arrival at heathrow, revivals lounge for free breakfast/ shower etc. before getting the limo to home. Oh. BTW, 96Kgs baggage allowance.

So good we are travelling LGW-MCO in UC on 29th April and MIA-LHR on 14th May.

Having done it once, it's very difficult to consider turning right on entering the plane!

Hi there,

I've travelled in all 3 classes on Virgin. Loved UC, but do feel it's an awful lot of money for what you get, especially as the 747 was old style (not flatbeds). Really liked PE - seats not all that different from UC (new style PE versus old style UC) - better value for me as I'm not bothered about the food & drink - just want more room!

Am travelling economy in May, as I now have 2 toddlers, & can't afford to upgrade their seats too! Having said that the only real problem in economy is leg room, so I shall stretch my legs out into their footwells!

Maybe check whether it's a new 747?

We were upgraded from PE to UC with Virgin when we flew to St Lucia - and we had our DD (aged 10) with us. Like many have said, not sure whether I could justify the huge expense ourselves, but for a freebie it was a great experience.

We were treated extremely well, much better than PE even - there were only about 15 people in the Upper Class suite and the service was superb. From the fillet of beef (whenever you wanted food throughout the flight ;) ) to the freshly baked scones and clotted cream for afternoon tea . . . and the water being constantly topped up in your crystal glasses . . . the proper duvets and pillows :flower: And then there was the bar area with chocolates, a massage facility (how nice was that  ).

All in all a fantastic start to the holiday.

I've flown Club class with BA quite often but not on the Orlando route since they introduced flat-bed seating (although I will be doing this in May :cool1: ).

I have travelled Club to west coast USA a few times and it's on the return journey that you really appreciate it. It's great to have the flat-bed for the overnight journey back. We'll be using frequent flyer miles (DH's) but would I pay for those seats? Not unless I got a very good deal - it's so expensive normally. I would (and have) paid for World Traveller Plus (sort of like Virgin's PE) and would not travel with either Virgin or BA in economy - especially on the Orlando route - because they are just too cramped for us.

Food in Club is a bit more fancy and you get priority treatment of luggage and Club/First check-in desk. There are snacks - choc bars, biscuits and fruit - that you can help yourself to at any time. WTPlus has same food as economy and you check in with economy (World Traveller) passengers and no special luggage treatment.

Hope this helps.

We too always fly PE and have been upgraded to UC. AS others have said it nice but I do not think I would pay to fly UC.

We have flown BA Club and First and Virgin Upper Class. If you can manage it BA Club and Virgin UC are worth every penny - but be warned you may never want to fly Economy again. As previously mentioned it's especially brilliant on the homeward leg to be able to lie flat and snuggle under a duvet. BA First was absolutely fantastic but it's almost impossible to justify the extra cost over club.

You didn't mention whether you had kids but ours were treated brilliantly on these flights and we almost didn't know they were there because they just converted their seats to beds and slept for nearly all of the flights (this alone was worth the cost of the upgrade to us!)

We fly Virgin Upper Class.
One point neither airline has a first class cabin on the routes to MCO, both have as their top servive either Club World for BA or Upper Class for Virgin.
However that should not detract from your enjoyment of the service.
To us, the holiday starts on the night before the flight, and whilst some might think its not worth the cost, I would disagree. If you book far enough in advance, you can get prices similar to unrestricted economy (£1,400)
My personal preferance is Virgin out of the two comparable services.
Virgin have a limo service to the airport and back, the check in is fast and efficient and the Clubhouse is way better than BA's version.
gatwick Clubhouse is a haven of calm, with the ability to get a full breakfast, or variations of such, a superb satffing level where the chanpagne glass never seems to be empty. In the clubhouse you have the ability to have a haircut, a massage, facial, to watch films on the cinema, to play games in the games room, to access the internet for free, the toilets are well, something else. In the BA lounge you get some snacks and a help yourself bar service and.....
Onboard, ALL flights to MCO with Virgin are in Upper Class suites now whilst BA are still doing some flights with the rubbish cradle style seat. I have travelled in their new flat bed and find that the seat area is claustrophobic compared to the Virgin seat area, the length is less and the distance between the shoulders is tighter on the BA seat. Some people however like the seats in BA as they face each other, but this means one of you is facing backwards on take off and landing.
The Virgin cabin is less full of seats (14 only) and the decoration is much nicer. I also like the ability to sit at the bar.
The IFE on Virgin is OK, and so is the BA.
Where BA is starting to beat Virgin is the quality of the in flight food, Virgin have changed their supplier and the quality has dropped a little.
However compared to both airlines Economy food, they are in a different league.
The flat beds in Virgin are a joy. On the ay back, i would always feel after getting off a flight coming from America like poo. Not since the Virgin Flat bed, I get at least 4 to 5 hours sleep, in my provided sleep suits tucked up in a duvet and pillows. Our child gets on the plane, and then wakes up in Gatwick.
I have always found the Virgin crew to be better than the BA snobs, but that I think depends on your view of life :)
Overall, both are good, personally I find Virgin better.

Thank you so much for all your comments so far.
The limo transfer, is that within a certain mile radius, or does it not matter where you live?! Do they take you home again too?
Do both the virgin and BA club houses allow children? (we have a 5yr old)
Is there a club house/first class lounge at Orlando?
What is the food like?!!

Be aware that the complimentary limo transfer is exclusively for the no-restriction (and much more expensive!) fares. We have flown VS UCS (DH's business trip) before (on a cheaper fare 'letter') and you get all of the same treatment without the limo transfer. For me, saving almost £1,000 for the restricted fare outweighed the cost of the limo transfer!

Like others have said, UCS is out of this world, but there is no way I could justify the cost if travelling with my three children, it would be far too expensive. PE is just fine until a lottery win! :teeth:

:wizard:

The Virgin Clubhouse is *supposed* to be for children over 12 years of age only. However, if travelling in UCS I believe they do not mind you taking in children of a younger age.

Hi we travelled BA in Club Class to Orlando for the first time in Feb this year. I was a bit apprehensive about changing from Virgin (have only experienced Premium Economy travelling with Virgin) to BA for the flight as I did enjoy the DTD check in at Orlando.

The Club World check in at Gatwick was quite quick and you get to "fast track" through the security/passport control at Gatwick, you also get to use the BA lounge which made a nice change, all free, as much alcolhol and food you could drink/eat - cereals plus croissants, muffins, toast etc. It is a very relaxed way to travel and we boarded a half hour before the plane was due to leave. On board it seemed like you had at least 2 stewards asking if you were Ok/needed any help etc which was a nice change. We experienced the new flat beds and they were absolutely brill - my son who is 7 was in his element reclined with a blanket watching the cartoon channel and saying "excuse me" "excuse me" to ask for a drink etc.

The stewards are really attentive, and said to my son that he must be used to travelling this way (which he isn't) the tvs are nicer the food is definately nicer, the Molton Brown gift bag was nicer. The seats are great, you are able to stretch out without worrying about anyone in front/behind you as the bed folds into the seat so the seat does not recline back it just expands into the fixed area of the seat. The Orlando club house wasn't very good - a bit disappointing really - saw a lot of Virgin passengers up there too so I think there must just be the one "shared" lounge for every airline - no food except these cracker/biscuits things - a TV area which has scatter cushions on it for the kids to watch their favorite video which can be obtained free of charge from the lady at the desk as you go into the lounge. Again it was nice just going from the lounge straight on to the plane and being able to sleep on a nice bed on the way back - great..... returned from Florida relaxed and refreshed (albeit depressed until we go again next year).

Kids are allowed in the lounges. I am avidly watching the prices for our flights next year - Would like to try Virgin Upper Class - I can get a good deal on the flight at the moment, but you have to pay straight away for the tickets and the tickets are non refundable, but we are still paying for this year's trip - I really prefer to pay a deposit and then pay the balance, I looked at Virgin Holidays but they are extortionately expensive for Upper Class (even with my 10% Frequent Virgin Discount) so am waiting until the end of April for British Airways Holidays to release their prices for their flights to the USA - I think their upgrade to club class is a reasonable £445 each way compared to Virgin's £885 each way. It's hard to justify the cost of paying extra for the upper class/club class service, but again once you have experienced it you don't want to go back to premium economy - hubby was particularly happy with travelling Club class - the only downside against BA over Virgin is that your luggage does not come off on the carousel first like it does with Virgin PE and of course the Virgin Downtown Checkin - but if you are travelling Club class you don't really have to worry about getting to the airport/what seat you are going to have etc because all of the seats are "fab" & when you do get to the airport sitting in the lounge isn't too bad a nice "wind down" period before the flight. With regards to the limo transfer this is provided usually if you pay the "full price" for your ticket ie flexible Upper class ticket - if you do the upgrade from the brochure or have a special offer flight price you do not qualify for the free limo service. The food on the plane was great, so much of it, a starter, a main course and a pudding - going out I didn't like one of the options (I'm a bit of a plain eater) so they made me a nice breast of chicken with potatoes - we had fillet steak on the way back, all on china with cloth serviettes, hot rolls are served & I think I had melon as a starter & a cheesecake as a pudding - you get a menu with about 3 choices of everything on it - there is a "walk in larder" with food which you can "raid" at any time during the flight - to be honest you are so full with all of the food that you don't really need to have any more - I didn't have a look at it - but it was available if you wanted - a bacon sandwich was served for breakfast before we touched down in Gatwick - Let me know if you need any more information - I'm sure whichever class of travel you travel in you will have a good time especially if your destination is Orlando.... it can't be bad.... :Pinkbounc

went with my travel in 2002 paid 250 for upgrade

Re. your question on the lounges. I believe that if your children are travelling Virgin UC or BA Club they are entitled to enter the lounge (no over 12 rules). Our children have always been accepted into both lounges with no questions asked.

The BA lounge at LHR is very poor for children - one tiny little room with a broken Brio train set and a television that has to be tuned in to whatever is being watched in the main lounge. There are no videos for them and if you are travelling during the evening this can be a problem as whatever is on in the main lounge may not be suitable apart from being very boring for them. I also found some of the staff to be positively hostile towards my very well behaved (at the time!) children which was a shame and in sharp contrast to how all other BA staff treated them.

The Virgin Clubhouse is great for kids.

Yes, flying UC on Virgin your children are allowed in. You can also take a guest in per ticket, though they do not get use of the V touch.

At Orlando you use the Delta Crown Room, ok, but not a lot for kids and you cannot take food in.
To see pictures of both clubhouses, go to V-Flyer web site
http://www.v-flyer.com/forum/flyer_search.asp?category=6&catname=Lounges

The menu for the Virgin clubhouse is vaialable on that site under one of the trip reports.

All the BA planes on the MCO route are now converted to New Club World seats. If travelling by myself I prefer the Virgin Upper Class Suite, but if travelling as a couple we prefer BA's arrangement - it is not easy to speak to the person sitting next to you with the Virgin arrangement, but with BA you face each other so no problems with talking.
