Has anyone ever been on Cleocin/Clindamycin or Levaquin?

My doctor put me on both of these as a last resort for a horrific infection in my thumb (caused by acrylic nails, no less  ).

To make a long story short, after about a week on these I started having terrible pain and burning in my esophogas. It's very difficult to eat or drink anything. I called both the pharmacist and the doctor and they both said a side effect of both pills is "GI distress". I always though of GI problems to be a little further down than the esophogas, but who knows. Neither one could tell me though how long this problem will last once I'm off the medication.

Have any of you had experience with these meds, and how long did the side effects last for you? I have 2 days left on the medication, and I am hoping the pain will be gone soon after.

Have been on Cleocin (as an IV medication), and it did give me an intermittent case of diarrhea/stomach upset/reflux, which disappeared completely several days after I was through with my meds. Maybe your discomfort is coming from the fact you're swallowing the pill, and maybe have some residue left in your esophagus/ or a little reflux from stomach irritation? That is just my very uneducated guess. But yes, Cleocin did give me GI distress, even in IV form (just in a different area than yours! ) I do hope you're feeling better soon!:wave2:

I think I take the middle one as an anitbiotic before dental visits, for heart valve prolapse (I think that is the med). Now tell me it is some sort of 'female' drug, Jill, and I have the spelling mixed up, LOL.  :o Regardless, if that is it, I have no problems. Hope yours is over soon.

I just got through with a round of Clindamycin last month, and mine had a big warning label on it that said "Do NOT lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking this medication." I forgot one time, so exhausted from being in pain, and went to bed right after taking it, and it made me very sick. :( I heeded that label after that!

Did yours say anything like that?

LOL Dan! It is not a female drug, it's a strong anibiotic, so it probably is the same one you take.

Gina, the pharmacist has SIX warning stickers on my Rx bottle.

Do not lie down...
Drink lots of water with it...(which I did)
Avoid exposure to sun...
Don't take if you're pregnant...
Avoid taking with vitamins/minerals or antacids containing magnesium/aluminum and\
Finish all this medication...

I was exhausted after reading the bottle!

I hear you... I had never seen so many warning labels on an antibiotic!! I was scared to do anything while I was on it. LOL I had sure never had one tell me to not lie down, before!

The dear angel who takes care of my grandmother just got through 3 rounds of antibiotics after artificial nails caused an infection that went all the way to her bone in her finger... scary. I guess it's more common than I thought, though!

Oh good!!! :teeth:
I did just go look at the bottle, that is what it is. And no warning labels on the bottle on mine, maybe the accompanying sheets when I got it had the warnings, or maybe they just think I am tough, or maybe too old to worry about, LOL. They are blue (nice shade too).

And remember, Jill, a DIS meet will soothe your ailments. :bounce:

Hee hee, Dan...I used to work at a Women's Healthcare Clinic, and we'd give Rx's for Cleocin/Clindamycin (cream) to patients with a very common, bacterial, non- sexually transmitted "female" infection--but it has other forms and other uses as well! Hope I didn't make you blush...

I was taking levaquin this week for a bad case of bronchitis and experienced some itching and abdominal distress. My doctor switched me to biaxin---no bad sides effects yet. It important to drink plenty of water with these super antibiotics because the drugs break down easier and lessens acid build in the elimination process. I check with WebMD when taking new medications to check for possible food and drug interactions. Please call your doctor because of your throat irritation. Caffiene is bad to have with many new meds because it has the potential to lessen the healing process that suppose to come.

I hope you feel better.

Every time my DD ends up in the hospital they give her mega doses of clindmycin and not only does she get the burning problems, she gets extremely painful THRUSH in her mouth.. :(

She's and adult - and now I understand why thrush is so horribly painful for babies..

Clindamycin is one of the antibiotics that my husband often takes. His surgeon explained that esophageal irritation is a common side effect of Clindamycin. Ray also gets a metal taste in his mouth whenever he's on it. He has to drink a full 8 oz of water when he takes the pill and if he can, it's suggested that he also eat something to lessen stomach upset. All ill effects wear off about 3-5 days after he's done with the medicine.

Thank you one and all! I took my last dose of both last night, so I'm hoping the side effects will be gone soon. I'm always amazed at what my DIS friends know! :D
