has anyone else been told they can do rides after a stroke by their doctor?

my husband had a stroke in the beginning of July. He's coming along really well and we have plans to go to Disney in October. I had him ask his doctor about rides like Slinky Dog. His doctor said it would be fine? Idk, but I don't think he should. I told him he needs to ask the other stroke doctor from the rehab. My husband said he would but if that doctor gives the same answer he's not going to listen to me over them.

Do you attend the specialist appointments with him? Can you ask a question or two as well?

he just got out of rehab yesterday and the doctor would talk to him there while I was at home. My husband plans to talk to the other stroke doctor from the rehab tomorrow and I plan to be there.

If he's doing pretty well, isn't on something like a blood thinner, and his doctors say its ok, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I imagine he's ready to start living his life with some normalcy, but I totally understand how traumatic this all could have been for you. I hope your husband agrees to abide by the doctor's opinion.

Is it necessary to have definete answers about Disney now?

The stroke was within the last 3 weeks and October is a few months away.

A lot of time is ahead of him in healing.

It seems that he is doing very well. So, it looks like a probably yes he will he fine based on what you've said. And certainly a Disney trip is a huge motivator in healing.

But I think this is a decision for September.

Disney parks can involve MILES of walking in hot/humid weather which can be a challenge even for healthy individuals. Anyone recovering from a major medical issue would likely not have that kind of stamina. I think something less strenuous would be a better vacation choice.

It's going to depend on what caused the stroke. I had one 16 years ago. Mine was caused by a dissection in the right vertebral artery at about the C5 level. Because of that I still have to avoid anything that would really jerky my head and neck hard. I've ridden Slinky Dog with no issues.

His doctors will know best what he needs to avoid and what kind of exercise and such he'll be capable of. I went to Colonial Williamsburg for a week about a month and a half after I had my stroke. Although that doesn't have the rides like Disney does, I still average 5+ miles per day walking and that was in June - Virginia tidewater in June = very hot and humid. Again, though, it's going to be your husband's doctors who will best be able to speak to what he can and can't handle and what is and isn't safe.

I agree. I think it’s fine to ask your questions now, because I am sure this was a traumatic event for you and you need reassurance as he transitions back to his normal activity levels. However, a lot of healing will occur between now and when you go to Disney. Ask about scheduling a follow up appointment closer to your trip and get the final approval from the doctor at that time. :grouphug:

we have AP's so we hang out at the pool all day and maybe take a walk around the park at night.

He's already vacuumed the house, cleaned the kitchen, and cleaned the shower stall. He can't sit still and every time I try and help him he gets annoyed. ;) ;)

thanks everyone! I will definitely have him talk to the doctor once the trip is closer.

How intense is Slinky Dog? It wasn't built the last time I was at HS. Maybe it's tame enough the doctor isn't concerned. Maybe the doctor doesn't know it's a roller coaster and think it's something else? Did DH say it was a roller coaster when he asked if he could ride it?

There are a LOT of questions for me.

I think he just asked about roller coasters in general. I won't let him on Space or RNRC and he doesn't like Guardians or Everest. We do love Slinky though.
