Has anyone camped in Durango, CO

I was wandering if anyone here could recommend a good campground in Durango, Silverton, or Ouray area. We will be camping in a tent. Sometime in the summer probally over the 4th of July. We want to stay a week. It will be me, DH, DS17, DD14, and DD12. TIA

I have tent camped near Durango many times in the past. The campgrounds we've stayed in were National Forest Service campgrounds.
We like Junction Creek :

and north of town we like Haviland Lake:

East of town we like Vallecito Campground, but it is pretty far outside of town.

We prefer camping near Durango since Sliverton and Ouray are much higher in elevation and hence much colder at night.

Wow, 22 years ago! The place we stayed was nothing too spectacular, just an overnight on the way to other places.

Try to get up into Animas Forks area if you can. May still need 4WD. It's just outside of Silverton and is listed on Google Earth.

Been a long time since I was out that way, but we stayed in state/national parks out there. All were spacious and nice as I remember.

Be forewarned though, that you will be in the high desert, and it will be HOT during the day (dry, mind you...) and cold (in the 40's) at night, so make sure you have clothes and supplies that will cover both situations!

Have fun, its beautiful country!! If you get the chance, you've got to see the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Its only a little over an hour away from Ouray!
