Has anyone booked hotwire car rental and took your car back a day later? If so, what happened? I booked a car rental via hotwire.com, (great price by the way) but we went and added another day. Hotwire doesnt allow changes and Hertz is saying we would have to come back to MCO and get another car for one day (fine, if that's what we have to do! me and hubby can take a slow early early ride and switch cars and be back at the WL by 8a for breakfast!) But...what if....I have a "situation" and call Hertz/Hotwire and tell them we cannot return the car until the next morning after our return date? Anyone ever done this?

"Situation" or not, its going to cost you...and probably dearly, if you opt to just return it late. Even a phone call explaining an issue isn't enough to get out of extra $$.

Car rental agencies are not terribly forgiving. They look for any reason to hit you with significant charges if you do not follow the original rental agreement as reserved.

There will be a $$$ daily rate. You can ask when you pickup the car. It'll probably take at least 2 hours to go to MCO, exchange the car and drive back. Longer if you have to rent from a different agency to get the rate you want. Gas and tolls will cost at least $5. You'll have to decide if the savings are worth the aggravation.

Hertz will charge you the additional although it may only be hours not a day. We just got back and used Hotwire/Hertz (never again!). Hotwire tried to pull a slick on on Hertz by reserving our car for 7 not 8 days since we needed 7 days + 1 hour. Hertz wasn't going for it and charged us the additional hour. Now we have to try to get Hotwire to pay up; although they have said they will but we haven't seen the $$ yet.

I would call Hertz and find out exactly what is in their system. Hertz told us at the rental counter they could not change the ressie for the add'l hour; their system is locked when it's a Hotwire ressie.
