Has anyone actually used their insurance?

I know we are getting insurance, but the question is which one?? I'm leaning towards Travelex (from insuremytrip.com). But I don't want to be dissapointed when it comes time to use the insurance.

Has anyone had to use their insurance? And if so what was the experience and who was the company? I can get trip insurance through AAA for $63/person or through Travelex for either $87 or $127 for the 6 of us. Do I go with the cheapest? What do I need to know about this? I'm clueless!

Thanks for everything!

From what I compared Travelex has better coverage for a bit less, or the plus coverage for not much more. I hate decisions!

Thanks for your help.

We used our travel insurance on our first Disney cruise, February 2003. It decided to blizzard in DC when we came home and shut down the airports. We spent 2 extra nights in Orlando, waiting to get a flight home. The travel insurance picked up the cost of our meals, the hotel, and the extra parking time at the garage in DC. Basically, all of our extra costs. They were quick and easy to deal with. I believe the insurance agency was Access America -- we just bought the insurance with our cruise from DCL.

Haven't tried anyone else -- had such a good experience the first time out, decided just to go with the DCL insurance from now on.

On our first cruise I was called home in St. Thomas because my dad passed away. We had Access America with DCL. They handled everything quickly and to our satisfaction. Paid the remainder of my cruise, airfare home, hotel on the way home. I didn't ask for anything else (didn't eat and didn't think about my friend driving 8 hours RT to pick me up at the airport). What I did find out is that you need to get your insurance within like 7-10 days after booking the cruise to eliminate the pre-existing condition clause (this is what AAA told me about their insurance). I don't usually get insurance for trips, but for cruises, I always will. I figure, if I get held up getting there, on the Eastern Cruise the soonest they could get me aboard would be Tuesday in St. Martin. Half the week is over then!!

We also had access america through Disney on both our cruises. Our 2nd cruise (Jan 2003 Wonder) my DH and DD got the Norwalk virus, and we were quarantined. The insurance was very prompt (sent in the claim about a week after we got back, and were paid within about 4-5 weeks), and they paid exactly what we asked with almost no questions. They just called me and verified that they understood what I had written. We claimed 3/5 of the cruise price since we missed about that portion of the cruise. Even though DS and I weren't sick, he wasn't able to participate in the kids' programs, and we weren't able to use the dining rooms (they did bring anything we wanted to the room, off the dining room menus).

I'll always get insurance now, and access america will be my first choice.

Glad to hear all the positive things about access america.

Do you think they would be as cooperative, even though we bought the insurance directly through access and not Disney?

We (14 of us) had to cancel our 12/03 DCL cruise sometime in late Nov. because my father-in-law had bypass surgery. DCL refunded us 50% of our money and AccessAmerica (which we bought through DCL) refunded the balance. It was actually a very simple process and we had our $ back quickly.

Travelex has their own website. Make sure you are not paying a fee for it.

Joanna, All of our dealings were directly with Access America, not Disney. Their service would have been the same, regardless of how we bought it. For our Christmas Cruise, I'm planning on switching over to them directly once we have our flights set, so that will be covered too. I'm hoping I'm not confused about this, but since I have a policy covering us (made at the time of booking), it's my understanding that I can switch directly to them and save some $ and have more coverage. If I can't, then I'll just keep the coverage through DCL.

Hope things are well for you. You'd love our DIS meet group for the Christmas cruise!

Hi Lisa...Thanks for the reply. Glad to hear it was good dealing with them. Like everyone else, We Hope we don't have to find out how they are, but glad to hear they are easy to deal with if you have to use them.

I know, We should be on the 10 day Christmas sailing with you guys. Wouldn't that be a blast. But we are cruising in August.

Joanna

we requested a quote directly with travelex and compared to the travelex price through insuremytrip.com, and they were identical, so insuremytrip did not add any fees, nor did they offer any discount, but that's perfectly fine. i think we're going with them because they're charging $127 for their plus coverage for me, dw, and dd (3).
