Harry Potter Ticket Question

My family has never been to Universal, but are interested in going to Harry Potter. I am confused about the ticketing requirements. Do you need tickets to BOTH Universal parks to get into the Harry Potter world? Or is that just to ride the train?

Diagon Alley with the Gringotts ride is in Universal Studios, so to access those you need at least a one day ticket for Universal Studios.
Hogsmeade with the Forbidden Journey and Hippogriff rides is in Islands of Adventure , so toaccess those you will need at least a one day ticket for Islands of Adventure.
The Hogwarts Express trains runs between the two and you need a park-to-park ticket to ride it.

So if you want to see all of the Wizarding World, you will need at least a one day park-to-park ticket. Hope that make sense and you have a great time.

Islands of Adventure = Hogsmeade
Universal Studios = Diagon Alley

Hogwart's Express Train connects these two lands which are in two different parks.
Park to Park "think Disney's Park Hopper" would be needed to see both in one day, and ride the train.

Or you can get a 2 day park to park pass and do each park each day and still ride the train. (hopping back and forth for two days) Just got back last night from WDW and Universal, and that is what we did. Having been there many times before, and Hogsmeade once, but never seen Diagon Alley, we might have been able to do both parks in one day, especially as my daughter bought us express passes for Mother's Day. That was awesome. I do recommend park to park either for one or two days because the train ride is cool, and different each way.
