My first grader and I were talking before the bus came today. She saw the Today Show talking about Obama's innauguration and she said, "Today he get's to be president, mommy." I smiled and said yes.
Then she asked me if I knew about "the guy we celebrated about yesterday." I played along and asked her to tell me.
"A guy named Martin. His last name was King, but he wasn't an actual King. Did you know, mommy, that a long time ago Black people couldn't eat in the same restaurant as white people could. It was very sad. We read a book and the end was sad. Somebody killed him because they didn't like him, I think. And that is sad." She was so cute as she gave me this little history lesson. I was so proud of her. I told her that Martin Luther King made God very happy. That God wanted us all to love each other no matter what we looked like. She looked up at me and said,
" I think Marting and God would be happy today."
I started crying then....
