I just came from Saturday evening Mass - this is a great weekend for those of the faithful. We need to remember that the gifts the Magi gave Jesus were incredibly important - the gold is believed to be their way of helping the Holy Family escape King Herrod wanting to kill the Christ child. The frankincense is their gift of divinity to the Christ child and the Myrrh given as a prophecy that the Christ child will need this when he dies on the cross and his body is placed in the tomb. The Wise Men were not just men that showed up on camels with some gifts - we need to reflect on their importance this weekend.

I always get sad remembering the the slaughter of the Holy Innocents. Historians found the grave of Herod over 10 years ago. I’m not sure if they have found the innocents graves yet however.

For those that don’t know, the Holy Innocents are the baby boys 2yrs and under that King Herrod had killed as spoken about in the book of Matthew.
I’m not sure if he had them removed from their family or if they were murdered in their own home.
Either way it is horrible and I’m sure many have forgotten or never knew that these baby boys died in place of Jesus which makes them the first Christian martyrs..
God bless these little boys and their families even after all these years.

It’s a sad but important part of the holiday. For people like me, who is Catholic but of Jewish origin, it hits even deeper. My ancestors could have been there during the tragic event.

I just want to point out that most historians would say that the massacre was probably 10-40 babies given Bethlehem’s population at the time of the Nativity. There is some debate whether it actually happened (those of faith believe it did), and it hasn’t been ruled out that it didn’t happen either. Most people assumed the slaughter was in the 1000’s when it was most likely under 100. It doesn’t make the event any less tragic but it helps put in perspective the size of a grave archeologists are still searching for. There are chapels near where they think by tradition the grave is near. I personally believe they will find it within 20 years (it’s more of where archeologists are allowed to dig due to political issues).
