Happy Darwin Day

I'm kinda amused by the sites that exclaim it's just a theory.
I believe in evolution, but I also understand that it is just a theory. Now, I know enough about science to understand why it is just a theory, but maybe you can convince me that it has been proven scientifically... popcorn::

*facepalm*

All of science is 'just' a theory.

http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=scientific theory - scientific theory (a theory that explains scientific observations) "scientific theories must be falsifiable"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_theory#Science - In science, the word theory is used as a plausible general principle or body of principles offered to explain a phenomenon....... is for this instance that a scientific theory is a claim based on a body of evidence.
...a scientific theory is understood to be a testable model capable of predicting future occurrences or observations and capable of being tested through experiment or otherwise verified through empirical observation

According to the United States National Academy of Sciences,
"Some scientific explanations are so well established that no new evidence is likely to alter them. The explanation becomes a scientific theory. In everyday language a theory means a hunch or speculation. Not so in science. In science, the word theory refers to a comprehensive explanation of an important feature of nature supported by facts gathered over time. Theories also allow scientists to make predictions about as yet unobserved phenomena, [5]

A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment. Such fact-supported theories are not "guesses" but reliable accounts of the real world. The theory of biological evolution is more than "just a theory." It is as factual an explanation of the universe as the atomic theory of matter or the germ theory of disease. Our understanding of gravity is still a work in progress. But the phenomenon of gravity, like evolution, is an accepted fact.[6]"

Okay, but you made my point for me. I wanted UR to dispute it, as he indicated that it was not "just a theory"...

Define theory - I don't mean what it says in the dictionary, I mean what you, youself 'think' theory in terms of 'evolution theory' means?

Where did I make your point? All of science is 'just' a theory. Gravity is a theory.

Scientific theory, which is what 'evolution theory' is, is the process by which we explain the observed facts and phenomena. In science, a 'theory' is as close to proven as any process can get. A scientific theory is, by virtue of being held up by the evidence (the observations and facts), accepted as a fact. A scientific theory must be falsifiable and have remained unfalsified.

A theory, as the word is most commomly used in everyday language, is more like a fact or a congecture. Evolution is not this type of theory.

Honey, I know that. Apparently UR does not...

I believe he was refering to the absuridy of the 'just' part of 'just a theory'. Not the term theory itself, but to the misunderstanding of the term that is so rampant.

Thanks Nomi.....but my post was actually aimed at DisneyBama Fan who seemed to be the one who was confused! :thumbsup2

Since the only thing that can be verified by "proofs" are mathmatical equations, I guess that means you don't exist either.

After all, your existance is just a theory. Heck, to me your just binary code transmitted into a forum environment, so the probability of your existance is less than that of the probability of Evolution's existance.

Let me tackle this, not from my current personal point of view, but from the point of view that I held about 5 years ago (yes, even I evolve ;) )

The theory of evolution looks to be bullet proof. The only problem, it cannot be observed directly because it takes place over too long a time period. So our understanding of it is based on our limited ability to study the artifacts left behind.

Every day, things that were held to be scientific "truths" are turned on their heads. So those that cling to creationism simply see this as another theory that looks solid simply due to man's limited ability to understand those things that he sees. Hence the use of the word "just"...

I'm kinda amused by the sites that exclaim it's just a theory.

It's a dead giveaway that they have a very limited knowledge of a beautiful science.
It's not something ya can just say ya believe in, it takes a li'l bit of study to
grasp the glory of it, makes ya really appreciate the earth as it is, well, evolved.

Thanks Nomi, I guess BamaFan wanted me to jump 'n fetch, but I was in that other
thread watchin' him explain the existence of "God," just now got back here to this one. :cool1:

I'm beginnin' to think BamaFan isn't lookin' for answers to his questions since he's requestin' just me to answer. :lmao:

ANYONE.....if they dig hard enough , can find someone, somewhere who has the occupational title of "scientist" to "prove" any theory that has ever been surmised. Kinda like the "theory" of JFK's magic bullet. "SOME" ballistics experts claim the bullets path was possible and therefore, that PROVED what happened that day. (well with a little prodding from the government) You've seen the evidence about that bullet, do you really think it happened that way?? What does YOUR logic tell you?

Agreed, but Evolution has been accepted not as a "theory", but as a "scientific theory". The bar is much higher. The two are very different...

I don't know, perhaps they are simply looking for a debate for debates thinks, or both of you misunderstood each others posts.

Remember, all the in the spirit of good debate! (I have to remind myself sometimes though. :P )

Yes, but since no scientist has been able to disprove Evolution, your logic is flawed.

Well, in the spirit of good spirits. :goodvibes

This definitely ain't a debate board. ;)
