Day 1--Thursday, January 26, 2006

My travel day is here! I still can’t believe I made the decision to fly down to Orlando for my birthday and the Expedition Everest preview less than two months after my previous trip to Walt Disney World! But I was going, and I was fully intending to enjoy every second of it.

But I had to make it through a half day of work first. Boo. I got to work bright and early so that I could leave by noon. It was a very hectic morning in work, which is a good thing because it made the morning fly by. One of my co-workers dropped me off at Logan Airport in Boston for my 2:05 JetBlue flight to Orlando.

I arrived at the airport about 90 minutes early, so I checked to see if my cousin, who works for another airline, was working. She was so we chatted for a bit. I grabbed a cheeseburger and a salad at Burger King for lunch, and headed for the gate. Made it through security pretty quickly, and was soon on the plane.

JetBlue was having some computer issues, so we were delayed on the plane for about a half hour. It was a bit frustrating to be stuck on the plane for extra time, but we did make some time up in the air, so our flight was only about 5 minutes late.

I got off the plane through the rear door (down the steps, across the tarmac, up the steps), and was soon on the tram to the main airport building. I only had carry on luggage, so I made my way directly to Magical Express. When I got there, I was joking around with the cast members, and told them they should get me a limo instead of a bus because it was my birthday. One of the cast members said, “Would you like me to sing Happy Birthday to you backwards?” I said yes, so him and another cast member turned around and sang Happy Birthday to me! I think I’m going to like celebrating my birthday in Disney World!

Once I was all checked in, I made way to the line to get on a bus to the Boardwalk Villas, where I would be staying for one night. I had to wait about ten minutes for a bus, but I was soon on my way. I met a really nice family on the bus. It was a mom, dad, a four year old girl, and a five year old boy. It was the kids first trip to Disney World! It was a lot of fun chatting with them while we road to Disney World, and sharing tips with them. I told them I would probably run into them all weekend.

When the bus pulled into the Boardwalk, I grabbed my suitcase, and went right in to check in. Two very friendly and helpful cast members checked me in. There was an envelope waiting for me with a Magical Memories Certificate to commemorate my birthday.

I was in room 1008 at the Boardwalk Villas. I had to walk halfway back home to Boston to get to my room (at least it felt that way). It took me a while to find my room. When I got off the elevators, I went to the right, and made my way down a long hallway. I totally missed the sign that pointed me in the direction of my room. So I turned around and walked back. I realized that I had to go outside and walk across to the other half the building to get to my room, which was about three rows from the end of the hallway--very close to Jellyrolls. My room overlooked the croquet lawn, and the canal that leads to Disney/MGM Studios.

After dropping my bags off, I headed out towards Epcot. I stopped at Guest Services to turn in my AP voucher and pick up a birthday button. I walked directly to Nine Dragons to have some dinner.

I must go to Disney too much. I had the same server as I had in December, and he knew exactly what I was going to order. Cucumber salad, potstickers, and General Tso’s chicken. Everything was excellent. The cucumber salad was chilled perfectly and had a slight spicy kick to it. The potstickers were served piping hot, cooked perfectly, and served with a delicious ginger sauce. The General Tso’s chicken was very tasty and just slightly spicy.

After dinner, I started walking back towards the Boardwalk to go to Jellyrolls. I wasn’t sure who was working tonight, but I was hoping that my beloved Scotty and Ray would be working. As I made my way to my room at the Boardwalk, I ran into Scotty, and I knew at least he would be working. He was surprised to see me, as I hadn’t warned him I would be coming down this weekend. But he was happy I was there, and gave me a big hug.

I made a quick stop at my room, and then headed directly to Jellyrolls. At 8:45, the place was already packed. Most of the tables in the lower section were already filled, as were all of the bar stools on the ledge, and many of the high top tables in the back! I had never seen it that packed that early! I wound up sitting at a high top table in the back, and eventually moved up to a ledge seat, and finally a front row seat for the final hour.

This was one of the best nights I ever had at Jellyrolls. My beloved Scotty and Ray were playing together, and Jason and Pete were the other piano players that night. All four piano players were fantastic, and seemed to be having a great time! There was a large group of drunk Australians there, and a smaller group of Pittsburgh Steelers fans. There were a lot of drunken idiots getting on stage all night. One girl was all over Ray, and I was waiting for her to get kicked out of the place, but they just warned her friends to keep her in control. Some of the highlights of the evening were Scotty sining “Taking It Easy” by the Eagles, Ray singing “Waltzing Matilda” and “I Still Call Australia Home” for the drunk Australians, and just watching all of the drunken idiots make fools of themselves.

A few minutes after midnight, I happened to look at my cell phone and noticed that it was now my birthday! I thought to myself, “Happy birthday to me” and realized that there isn’t a better place than my favorite bar to start my birthday off right.

At the end of the night, I stopped over to chat with Ray and Scotty a bit. I told Scotty I was going to ride Expedition Everest tomorrow, and when he asked if anyone could go on this weekend, I told him you needed to be a DVC member or an AP holder. I told him I could get him on the ride, though, so since he had the next day off, we made plans to meet up to ride Expedition Everest.

I headed back to my room using a side door at the Boardwalk, and was in bed shortly after 2:00 a.m.

I'm not old enough to be a hippy child in the 70's. ;) And wasn't raised by hippies either. LOL

Great way to spend a birthday. Glad your guys were working.

What a great way to start off your birthday -- in one of your favorite places in the "world". Sounds like you had a great time!

Sounds like a great night and fun trip! You got my favorite two pianomen on your birthday too! Glad you had fun and thanks for posting.

Sounds like you had a great start to your birthday. I've had rooms at BWV's on the 1st floor before, I kind of like them!

I wasn't overly thrilled with this first floor room. There was too much activity on the little service road. Lots of trucks.
