Happy Birthday, Dear Dude - A Sept 2010 PTR - 9/22 Trip Report Started p34

Well, as I mentioned, we slept on it last night. That was after I ran numbers AGAIN with a 3-night AKL and 3-night elsewhere stay. We were still set to save money over the original cost, using the 40% discount for those three nights. The big dilemma was which of the monorail resorts.

Today, I subscribed to a bunch of DIS threads about Bay Lake Towers, Contemporary Resort, Polynesian, and Club Level stays. I researched the heck out of it. I sent a big long email to Chris, because he indicated before I left for work this morning that he's really interested in this particular decision. I sent him maps and links and cost savings, etc.

I was waiting to call the CRO until we had a 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice.

Chris read my email and we talked about a few things. Here are the pros and cons:

Bay Lake Tower:
Pros - brand spanking new, experience like a Westin or W hotel, amazing Magic Kingdom view from the balcony.
Cons - limited food options, all at the Contemporary, as far as I can tell, a little bit of a walk to the Contemporary for food and monorail, we can't tell that there is much to do walking around the grounds.

Contemporary:
Pros - rooms look upscale, trendy and modern, we like the sliding doors to the bathroom/vanity, Magic Kingdom view from balcony, Club Level available.
Cons - not much to do walking around the grounds (?)

Polynesian:
Pros - themed resort, Club Level available, lots to do on the grounds and inside (Tambu Lounge, anyone? Lapu Lapu, anyone?), larger rooms.
Cons - no King rooms, not as close of a Magic Kingdom view.

Finally, we decided to go with 3 nights at AKL CL and 3 nights at Polynesian CL (if available). We could do that for $158 less than our original reservation. We're thinking bargain! and we're gonna love this place! We're having visions of walking to TTC to take the Tronorail to Epcot, Lapu Lapus on the beach, and soaking in the entire experience.

So I was anxious to call the CRO. When Trevor answered, he pulled up my reservation and asked for my PIN and asked what I was looking for. He kept saying AKL CL would be perfect for the birthday celebration. I told him the PIN wouldn't work for CL and asked him to check another resort for three nights. He checked the Poly, and sure enough, we could get the Club Level room there for the price I had calculated. I was just about to pull the trigger and shorten our AKL stay when Trevor says "let me check something real quick..."

I waited, and waited.
Trevor says "how's the weather in Austin?"
Me: "it's been a beautiful 80 degrees and the bluebonnets are blooming like crazy."
Trevor: "That sounds so beautiful. So are you looking forward to your Sunrise Safari?"
Me: "yes, we really are..."
<<long pause>>
Trevor: "Well, you know these rooms at code rates are based on availability, right?"
Me: "Yes, which is why I am surprised we can get Poly CL..."
Trevor: "I'm able to apply your code to your current AKL CL reservation for all 6 nights. That will save you $945. Would you like for me to make this change before the magic disappears?"
Me: "945 Dollars?! 945 Dollars?!"
Trevor: "Mrs. W, would you like to secure the reservation?"

Well, you can guess the rest. We are now officially sticking with our original reservation for almost $1,000 less! I am so excited about this. :dance3:

When I told Chris, he was excited too and said "it's ok if we miss the Poly and Contemporary this trip. It gives us a reason to go back!" Now I like that way of thinking!

Congratulations!!! I love the CRO CMs who check everything out and actively look for options. You can apply the savings to your next trip when you stay at the Poly! :thumbsup2

I am curious about the CR CL - as compared to Poly CL - have you stayed both?

We stayed at both in 2008. I LOVED CR CL and liked Poly CL. The Hawaii building is close to everything, but the 2nd floor rooms, which we had, do not have balconies. You can open the sliding window and look out, but no balcony. For the Poly, I prefer the Tahiti building. The rooms are slightly bigger than Hawaii and the bathrooms have double sinks, which Hawaii does not have. Plus, there are balconies on the 2nd floor in the Tahiti building. Another benefit of the Tahiti building was being a short walk from the TTC.

And congrats on getting the PIN applied to your AKL CL room :yay:
And Chris' logic means you can plan another trip soon ;)

Happy Easter, everyone! The Easter Bunny came to visit Katie one last time.

We're headed out for brunch at the restaurant where Katie is hostessing today on the lake. I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Katie's last gift?! Oh, how sad. She can still get more Easter bunny gifts!!!:rotfl2:

Gotta love that Baby Binks chocolate bunny. I just got one for Rachel for the first time...probably will be a tradition.

YEAH< YEAH!!!! Saving $945 and staying at a wonderful AKL CL -- You go girl!!! This is wonderful!

The Poly is terrific...it truly is. and BLT really surprised me with how cool it was. I highly recommend trying that sometime.

But AKL is just in a completely different league.

Good job CL CM!:thumbsup2

WOW! That is a HUGE savings!!!! :cool1: How exciting!!!
I know! We were thrilled! And we are getting really excited about the trip.

Funny how things always work out for the best! That's great news.
You're right - they do work out for the best. No matter how much we fret over them in the meantime.

Congratulations!!! I love the CRO CMs who check everything out and actively look for options. You can apply the savings to your next trip when you stay at the Poly! :thumbsup2
Isn't it great? Trevor was the bomb! And I'm pretty sure we will be headed to the Poly in the next 2 years or so. What if we get a bounceback?

That is great information. I am filing it away for our next trip. Based on your comments, and others', we might just have to do a split stay CR and Poly.

Happy Easter Susan!

Awwww I love Katie's last gift from the Easter bunny :goodvibes
Thanks! She loved it, and she asked why this has to be her last one. :rotfl: My girl is a chocoholic. The cocoa bean doesn't fall far from the tree. :lmao:

Happy Easter to you as well!

Part III, Chapter 7
"What the..."

Sunday, August 10

We left off at the end of our Animal Kingdom Sunday.

Each day, I tried to document our individual feelings and reactions. Here is our recap:

Weather: "sweltering", per Katie, but thankfully, no rain

Souvenirs:
• Chris started a pin collection in Dinoland
• Mom bought a nice strapless dress in Harambe
• Mickey Mouse magnet with measurements for Mom and my sister
• Rainforest Cafe cup that has LED lights in it for Paxton (Katie's step-sister)

Best thing about the day:
• Katie: dinner at Boma. Specifically, the cous cous (who knew?)
• Chris: Expedition Everest
• Bonnie: Primeval Whirl
• Susan and Caitlin: The Legend of the Lion King
• Katie and Caitlin: Dinosaur ride

Worst thing about the day:
• Katie refused to hold baby Simba
• A kid kicking the back of my seat the ENTIRE show at Flights of Wonder
• Katie: Annoying kids screaming "Nemo!" "Nemo!" at the Nemo show

Funniest things:
• Katie's temper tantrum not wanting to hold Simba.
• Little boy staring at Bonnie's glowtini saying "what the..."
• Chris's assessment of the cheesecake vs zebra domes at Boma: "The cheesecake's better than those zebra balls."

Next up: Monday, Our Second Full Day

• What life-changing event affected our vacation on Monday?
• What tour did we take?
• What two parks did our family visit?
• What dinner quickly became a favorite event of our vacation?

She can still get them. It's just my way of coping with her growing up. She'll be an official adult in less than 2 weeks! ARGHHHH!

I found all the goodies at Walgreens. She loves white chocolate, thus the white choc bunny. And Reeses are her favorite candy ever.

Oh my, I still want to try BLT sometime. How the heck do you get access to that lounge at the top? Do they have such a thing as CL with the DVC?

Speaking of that, I STILL haven't received my DVC DVD that I ordered a couple of weeks ago. This same thing happened to me two years ago. I never got the DVD. I'm thinking maybe we'll just have to do a tour in Sept. Sneaky me.

That's what I said in my post!! You need to rethink this "last" easter basket...:rotfl:
I missed your earlier post. I guess I was posting when you posted. Yeah, we'll rethink it. But I'm not sure if Katie will be home for Easter next year. I guess I need to check that Colorado calendar.

You have to show your keycard to access the lounge at the top of BLT. And it really is cool. Even if you don't do the lounge but just go up to get the views of MK and Disney and watch the fireworks.

I never felt that the walkway from BLT to Contemporary was that long, esp since you walk on the skyway bridge and it's such a lovely view, even on that bridge. I think it was about 5 minutes from our room to the monorail.

If not, a care package from home would be great too!

Oh and I forgot to say, Yes, take the tour of DVC...it's neat to see the rooms. I think they have SSR and BLT models up right now.

So it's not a Club Level thing? Anyone can go there? And, does that mean you really don't need a theme park view room, since you can use the lounge?

Good to know on the walk. I'm pretty sure the walks at AKL will be looonnnggg ones!

I can't wait to send care packages! Gotta talk Dude into that DVC tour. I guess I could do it on my solo day, but it wouldn't have the same impact, ya know? :lmao:

Happy Easter, everyone! The Easter Bunny came to visit Katie one last time.

This was the first year we didn't do an easter egg hunt at our house ... so sad!! And so begins the years of my mom putting the walmart bag of chocolate on the counter the night before and letting us go at it :lmao:

That being said, we had egg hunts up until last year, with my brother in University and me a full-fledged grad. I'm sure Katie will appreciate visits from our favourite bunny long after she's "grown up" - it's all a state of mind, right?! :cool1:

Congratulations on your savings!! I once managed to get a code (publicly available, not a pin) applied to a reservation when I was prepared to downgrade my room from pool view at AKL to standard view in order to get the code. I think sometimes the CM can get cleared to apply discounts if you are willing to change your reservation nevertheless. I think staying all the time in one place will work great for you!! :thumbsup2

You must be staying at BLT to use the lounge. I know I just handed my room key and they ran it through the system and escorted me up.

However, I was staying there on DVC points...not sure if that matters (I assume you'd stay on a cash ressie or are you renting points?) I don't remember if that makes a difference. At one time it was supposed to be JUST for DVC members staying on points there...but I don't know if they opened it up to all BLT guests or just those staying on points.
