Handicapped rooms?

Hi...we are fairly new DVC members...I alway read about not getting a hadicapped room...what is the difference ....thanks...amy

In a studio unit, the bathtub is replaced with a roll-in shower, 1 bedroom and larger units have a roll-in shower AND the regular jacuzzi tub. There are grab bars in the commode area, and the commodes are higher. Under counter space is absent or limited to allow wheelchair foot pedals to roll under the sinks and counters. Beds may be closer to the floor (lower in height) to allow someone to transfer more easily from chair to bed. Kitchen counters and stove are lower.

We were lacking an eating bar off the kitchen with chairs, the light switches are also lower.

The big deal if you get one - in our experience - was learning to "deal with" the shower. Its easy to get water all over the floor with a roll in shower, you need to pay attention to the curtain - and a few extra towels wouldn't hurt either.

With little kids, you may want to remove the knobs and/or burners from the stove. Always a good child saftey idea, even better when the stove is more accessible to little hands.

The studios lack counter space in the bathroom in addition to lacking a tub.

thanks for the replies....we have a 1 bedroom booked....just wanted to make sure we would still have the jacuzzi tub if we got a handicapped room...have to have this...thanks..amy

Another thing that we noticed was there is no door between the hallway and the laundry room.

Some accessible studios have a tub with grab rails rather than a rollin shower.

The two studios like that we've had at BCV also do not have a closet but rather a larger armoire for the TV that has more storage in it. Both times we were only in the studio for one night but I think the storage situation would be tight for a longer stay.
