Taking my dad to WDW in October and he has a handicapped parking tag for his car. We are renting a car and driving to the parks, and I know I can use the tag as long as he is in the car. My question is, is the handicapped parking at the parks a true advantage? Are they all a fairly short walk from the gates or would we be better of in regular parking and using the trams?

Also, if we use handicapped parking, will there still be a CM directing us exactly where to park?

Just follow the blue line in the parking lot and the parking CM will wave you forward once they see the handicap placard. We don't usually arrive real early so I don't know if CM's are in the handicap lot early on, but we've never seen one when we arrive. We just have to drive around looking for a spot.

As for whether it's convenient, that depends on the park. At the MK, the handicap parking is at the front of the lot but you have to walk through the tunnel and up to the TTC to catch either the monorail or the ferry. At EPCOT and AK, it's very convenient and just a short walk to the entrance. DHS is close however that parking lot is small and it seems that we never get there in time to park close but instead end up in the preferred section. I've had to use a wheelchair for our last few trips (knee surgery) so using the trams wasn't really an option. However, if your Dad is able to walk, especially at the MK, it's probably a shorter walk from the car to the tram than it is from the handicap parking to the TTC. Depending on where you end up parking at DHS, it might be faster to just park and take a tram also. I see that you're staying onsite so for both MK and DHS, the bus drops you off close to the entrance at both of those parks and would probably be the shortest walk for your Dad.

Thanks so much! I'm thinking we will most likely boat to the Disney Studios, my dad likes the ride. I appreciate the help!!:)

1 it depends on what you think as a true advantage

2It depends on how fair down the isle you are from the main gate ( MK is a walk no matter where you park)

3 the few times I have used it there were no CM in the handicap spots you just found one your self. but I do not use one that often ( a few times a year I go with a friend that uses them)

at MK there are no trams to handicapped parking lot. it is a walk and slightly uphill to get to the TTC and the ferry or monorail

One thing to keep in mind if you use the regular lot and take the tram; the handicapp spots are much wider, allowing for the door to fully open as well as room for someone to give assistance getting out of the car.

Not all of the handicapped parking spots are much wider.
Our daughter can't walk and needs to be lifted into her wheelchair. Some of the handicapped spots are not wide enough to place her wheelchair next to the car and lift her into it. We sometimes have to park either park halfway into the spot temporarily to get her seated or park the wheelchair behind the car and carry her.

The handicapped parking does not have parking lot trams. If you don't have a wheelchair, it may be a shorter walk to park in the regular lot and use the trams.
