Handicap room ressie question

Just curious................When we reserve a 2br and VWL I know we can guarantee either a dedicated or a lock-off. Why do they not reserve the handicap rooms that way? Wouldn't it be easier to reserve certain rooms as they go. There are only x number of handicap rooms. If I called for last minute ressies and was told "We can get you a studio, but the only room left for those nights is a handicap room." I would be happy to be getting a room and know before going that it will be handicap. Also it seems that it would be easier for those folks that NEED a handicap room. They would know when they make their ressies that they WILL be getting a handicap room. Any ideas why handicap is only a request not a guarantee?

It is ALMOST a guarantee if you request one for medical reasons. As far as a guarantee you WON'T have a HC room, what if the room you were originally assigned should have a problem, like a major leak or fire, or the previous occupant just thoroughly trashed it and it needed a full rehab? It allows Disney some legal leeway.

We have been told that if we request a wheelchair accessible room it is guaranteed. For us, it's not absolutely vital, but for some people a fully wheelchair accessible room is the only way that they are able to travel. On the other hand, if we request only "first floor for medical reasons", we've been told that is notguaranteed, but would be filled before other requests fro first floor.
For DVC using points, special needs requests are handled by MS. For cash ressies, there is a Special Reservations number to use.

My question is concerning the ability to guarantee a non-handicapped room. Handicapped studios do not have a tub, and lots of people going to WDW need tubs (like families with young children). Since room requests are just that-requests not quarantees, is it not guaranteed that a family will get a tub?

There is no quarantee that you will NOT get a handicapped room. We were given one once at OKW(grand villa) and accepted it and once at BCV(one bedroom) which I called and had them change. I was not charged for this change.

Simba's Mom...if you're in a 1 or 2 bedroom, I believe you'll have the whirlpool tub anyway. At least that has been our experience at BCV and VB. The shower in the master has been a roll-in.

The HA studios can be either a roll-in shower or a tub with bars.

I always request and get a wheelchair accessible room. When I make the request the CM always places me on hold and calls somewhere. When he or she comes back on the phone they indicate that the HC room has been confirmed. This is indicated on my mailing confirmation. I accept that as a "guarantee". It always works.

I am glad to know that it is a guarantee. I cannot imagine needing a HC room and not being sure if you will get it. So it is a "guarantee" if you NEED the room, but only a request if you do not want a HC room..............

The one and 2 bedroom units at all the DVC resorts still have the whirlpool tub, so you will only not get a tub if you end up with a handicapped studio which has a roll in shower.
I know for OKW that there are 19 wheelchair accessible studios, 19 one bedrooms (which can be put together to make 19 two bedrooms). There is also one dedicated 2 bedroom. This is per an email reply from MS. OKW has the largest number of rooms; the other resorts would have less handicapped accessible rooms.
