Hand-dipped milkshake

This is probably a silly question, but what is a 'hand-dipped' milkshake?
I was looking at the menu for the Plaza restaurant and I have never heard this term before. How is it different to an ordinary milkshake?
 
It means that someone gets scoops of real ice cream out by hand, adds milk, sauce, etc. And mixes it.


Some places (like fast food) just dispense from a machine or use soft serve ice cream from a machine.
 
yep - that just means that it is not pre-mixed by a machine.
 

I know that they changed from hand dipped to using soft serve at Sci Fi for milkshakes.
What is everyone's opinion of how different or better one is over the other?
The reason I ask is because I have read that you can still request a hand dipped one and they will make it for you.
 
Soft serve ice cream contains a lot of air. Air is pumped into it so that it will flow out of the machine. That's the biggest difference I know between that and hand-dipped ice cream. Hand dipped ice cream is generally of a better quality and more expensive than soft serve. Soft serve also melts faster.
