Hand baggage ban has been lifted!

yoo hoo.. I can finally start looking forward to the journey!

I was so happy to hear the news this morning :woohoo: . I couldn't imagine 9 hours on a plane with nothing for my boys to do :teeth: .

SammieG when do you go? We fly on Friday :cloud9:

Hi Sadeeyore!

We leave tomorrow.. but fly Wednesday morning.

All we need now, is the flights not to be TOO delayed.. and then hopfully that horrid feeling in the pit of my tummy will disappear and I can start to imagine actually going -
instead of dreading the whole experience...

Hope you have a great trip!

Sammie xx

Safe journey to everyone - the official line is :-

"The Department for Transport said passengers would now be allowed to carry one item of hand luggage on to flights, although there would still be some restrictions in place. "

- so assume no electrical items or liquids will still be enforced but probably safe for a book and moisturiser - and toys for you with small children which i could imagine would have been a nightmare without!!!

Whilst the hand baggage ban has been lifetd, BAA will not lift the ban until tomorrow morning at 04:10 and then the size of the hand baggage will be restricted.

at present (starting tomorrow) electrical items are permitted in the hand baggage.

Now I am really confused. 4 days ago, their was no way that any electrical item would be allowed on as it could be used as a detonator. Now they are saying they are allowed on, with some of these scumbags still at large and possibly still planning large atrocities. I would be much much happier flying in the knowledge that nothing allowed on the plane that could be used for anything untoward would be allowed, electrical items included. Just my opinion.
I wish all of you going in the coming weeks a magical time.

No liquids of any kind will be allowed and that includes gels and creams so no moisturisers.

I am glad that the size of hand luggage is restricted. It seems to get bigger every year. Trolley cases (smallest size) are now too big to use as hand luggage yay! I am fed up of people taking forever to get these large items into the overhead lockers each year. The new dimensions in centimetres are 45 x 35 x 16 - I just measured my new backpack and it fits these exactly. So if you have an average sized backpack, you're probably ok.

Still a few restrictions on size and what you can carry (liquids):

Each passenger is permitted to carry one item of cabin baggage through the airport security search point.

The dimensions of this item must not exceed a maximum length of 45cm, width of 35cm and depth of 16cm (17.7"×13.7"×6.2" approx) including wheels, handles, side pockets etc.

Other bags, such as handbags, may be carried within the single item of cabin baggage. All items carried by passengers will be screened by X-ray.

No liquids of any type are permitted through the airport security search point, other than the following items:

  • Prescription medicines in liquid form sufficient and essential for the flight (eg diabetic kit), as long as verified as authentic.
  • Baby milk and liquid baby food (the contents of each bottle or jar must be tasted by the accompanying passenger).

The definition of liquids includes gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures and the contents of pressurised containers, eg toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrups, perfume, deodorant, shaving foam, aerosols etc.

To help their progress through search points, passengers are encouraged not to include items capable of containing liquids (eg bottles, flasks, tubes, cans, plastic containers etc) in their cabin baggage.

All laptops and large electrical items (eg large hairdryer) must be removed from the bag and placed in a tray so that such items neither obscure nor are obscured by the bag.

Pushchairs and walking aids are permitted but must be x-ray screened. Wheelchairs are permitted but must be thoroughly searched. In addition to the above, passengers boarding flights to the US and items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, will be subjected to secondary search at the gate. Any liquids discovered will be removed from the passenger.

Apparently the BAA airports aren't lifting the ban until 4.30 am tomorrow, this is so that they can train all staff adequately and make sure that everyone is briefed. Manchester is not a BAA (didn't realise), anyone know if the ban is definitely lifted here?

Am I the only one who's not happy about this? I was hoping the ban would still be in place when I travel in a few days ! Now I will be eyeing up everyone suspiciously and wondering if they have anything Dodgy in their bags !!!! I felt safer with NO BAGS !

I know what you mean Disney D. it makes me a little apprehensive, but I am glad that I will be able to keep myself entertained. Remember they are aware now so big checks are in place.

I am quite pleased about it. I am a bit worried about not being able to bring bottled water. We usually drink 4-6 pints between us in addition to all of the water we are given by the flight attendants. I will just down a couple right before we get on I guess.

Richard and me, dont worry, you can always get water on the plane, as much as you want!

have a great trip everyone!
