i read in another Thread about the chairs and how available are they.......
That HAMMOCKS should be another Thread all in itself............

SO.........

Hammocks?
Thoughts?

If there is no body but a towel is it up for grabs?
Like move your feet loose your seat type thing?????

How early do you have to leave the ship to get one?

HOw many are there???????

Where are they??????

Make it a non-issue...use the ones by Heads Up Bar, which are almost always available.

I remember seeing a few hammocks. One of my pictures I wanted to get was of me laying on a hammock. In fact, that picture is pinned to the interior roof of my car so I can look at it every day.

We got off the ship right away. We went and got lounge chairs over by the big wooden play thingie that's in the water. There was a hammock over there and some man had all his stuff on it, he was saving that whole area.
I kindly asked him if I could take his stuff off so I could take a few pictures and he was very nice and obliged.
Honestly? If you're a sun goddess you're not going to want to hang out at a hammock all day. Most of them are tied to trees (I think) and you'll get a lot of shade. Also, it's hot and humid and when you're surrounded by bushes and trees, the temperature gets about twenty degrees warmer in that immediate area. I don't recall seeing any hammocks that were out in the open.
Don't go crazy if you don't get a hammock when you first arrive. The island tends to get less populated as the day goes by, and, say, at 3:00 when a lot of people have reboarded the ship, maybe then you'll be able to find one and relax for a half hour or so. Don't let the hammock be your main focus, you'll spoil your vacation:goodvibes .

The hammocks I mentioned are not by the adult beach. They are at the far end of the family beach. I think there is a total of four.

These are the hammocks between the family beach and the sports/teen beach. You can see the umbrellas on the deck of the Head's Up bar in the background. They were empty most of the day when we were there in June 2005. Of course, it was so hot that no one wanted to stay out in the sun for too long.

Yes dont make the mistake we made by stopping too soon, just keep walking it gets quieter and quieter :ssst: the further you go!

I'm not saying I want to laze about on a hammock all day, but it sure sounds good! :goodvibes I'm glad they have a lot of shade though, I'm not all that into sun-bathing, it usually just turns into sun-burning for me! :headache:

Is there any way to reserve a hammock?
We got off the ship with the very first group, and folks were racing to the hammocks. So we took the tram to the end of the beach and they were all taken. We got back on the tram and went to Serenity Bay and they were all taken. For the rest of the day, we scouted for hammocks, and by the time we left at 3:30, we were still unsuccessful. Bummer, dude.

We are going on a double-dip in Oct. This time we plan on finding a young lad with long legs and paying them to run ahead and grab one.

Ok... IF you got directly to the beach by turning left after the gift shops like you are going to the the sports rental and equipment facility there is a great area with plenty of hammocks. We had no problem obtaining and keeping one. Heck usually most people won't go back there because it's not on the beach and because most visitors walk right past this area and end up farther down on the beach front. I am a shade person due to fair skin and this is one of the quietest, shadiest place on Castaway Cay, plus its close to the restrooms!

That is where we found them with we went on the cruise a few years ago. We get off early and save the need chairs for our group (10) and there were lots of hammocks when you took the first left near the rental shop. :grouphug:

There are several hammocks on Serenity Bay, also. And this is where we had a not-so-good hammock experience. On our cruise last April, we slept in, ate breakfast, and then casually walked all the way to Serenity Bay - so it must have been close to 11am by the time we wandered onto that beach. We had to walk about a third of the way down before we reached an empty hammock, but were happy to have one! :goodvibes We spent a couple of very relaxing hours there before heading off to the adult lunch buffet. Since we were only going to be gone about 30 minutes, we left everything on our lounge chair and hammock: our books, suntan lotion, towels, shoes, beach bags, etc. When we returned, we found a man (maybe in his mid-50's?) laying on the hammock and his wife in a chair about ten feet away. My book, towel, and bottle of suntan lotion had all been pushed off the hammock and were laying in the sand partly underneath him! :sad1: The man was awake and watched us approach, saw my dismay, and even heard me grumble about my stuff being in the sand but he never said a word, not even when I was gathering my things from underneath him! His wife pretended not to notice anything, too! DH went back to laying on his original lounge chair, right next to the guy, and I pulled another lounge chair over to be next to DH. The guy ended up laying there for about an hour longer before getting up and then the couple left, still without saying a word. Now, maybe some might think we were being the rude ones since we were "holding" the hammock. However, there were other EMPTY hammocks a little farther down the beach!!! All the couple would have had to do is walk maybe 20 more feet and they would have had their own spot! :sad2:

I don't think that is rude if there are other empty hammocks or even during lunch, bathroom visits. What bothers me is when people walk away for hours on end knowing they will not be using a hammock. They stop back by the hammock to pick up their items. Carry the items or set it aside. A hammock is a terrible thing to waste :rotfl2:

On all 3 of our DCL cruises I STILL have never gotten to experience a hammock! Last year I sat in the sand next to one that somebody had "saved" by putting all their worldly possesions on. In the 5 hours I was there they NEVER came back and used it. I wish I had the guts to have moved their stuff and FINALLY get to experience the joys of the hammock!

I'm with ya! I've never been able to get a hammock either, but I certainly get tired of seeing them "saved". Just like the pool chairs. But, still, I can't bring myself to take their stuff off. I'd be too worried about the inevitable unpleasant confrontation to enjoy it.

Or maybe I'm just a wus.

Anyway, my plan this year is to hire a former track star to go get one for us. We are old folks, and by the time we get to Serenity Bay, we have to walk all the way to the very end. I wish they had an "old folks section for the gray haired set that can't run anymore. We like Disney, but sometimes I think we should just go on one of the other cruise lines where we can be the youngest ones on the beach :)

No personal offense to anyone, but if I see a hammock that's been unused for almost an hour, I'm moving your stuff and I'm parking my butt in it. If you have other things to do, then you shouldn't be reserving it.

Has anyone had a bad confrontation from actually moving someone's items? I think the waiting for an hour or so is perfectly fine as you are giving that person time to get back and use it, etc. but like others, I would be worried about the confrontation.
