I'm always in all of the doom and gloom threads, so thought I'd see if anyone is as excited as DH and I about Hamilton streaming this Friday on Disney Plus? We fell in love with the soundtrack before we first saw it for my 50th BD in October of 2017. So, we didn't see the original cast, but still it was to that point, the best piece of art I'd ever experienced. We saw it again on Broadway, some of the cast was different. Then we were lucky enough to snag tickets to see it in San Juan with Lin. That was the most amazing theater experience of our lifetime. We're so psyched to see if with all of the OGs.....going to be amazing!

I'm not sure if I'm excited or not. We had tickets to see Hamilton at the Kennedy Center in August and it was cancelled. I obviously want to see it but I think I want to wait until we see the stage version first.

Awww, I'm sorry....that sucks. I don't think seeing it now will make you not want to see it onstage or have that be any less of an experience. My DH knew the soundtrack so well by the time we saw it that if the Hamilton understudy went down, he could have tagged in! I can't tell you how psyched we were to hear that Disney moved the release date up so much....it's such a gift during this pandemic.

I'm excited. I'm planning on getting Disney Plus next month so we can watch once my dd gets home from college. We saw it in Austin. Agree, the most amazing piece of art I've ever experienced. IRL would be better, but filming it does give you perspective that sitting in an audience can't provide, so different isn't necessarily worse.

Umm I am counting the minutes! Listening to the soundtrack over and over!

It has been my dream that the original cast was filmed and it would be released. I am beyond excited.

I’m excited. I’m saving hundreds of dollars! Lol.

we’re doing a whole movie night at a friends Friday night. It’ll be an outdoor movie night with popcorn, candy, pizza and cotton candy.

I haven't seen it, and I'm not familiar with the soundtrack, but I do intend on getting Disney + and watching it soon. So many folks who have seen it and seem to enjoy it (and I've never been to or seen a Broadway show) so I figured what the heck, it can't possibly be any worse than some of the stuff on TV of late, and maybe it will be good. I'm hoping so.

If you don't mind - why?

I've never seen it. I've only seen advertisements for it. I'm not impressed with the "music" in the show, but that's most likely because I don't think rap, or hip-hop, or whatever that style is ranks as music.

I guess I can understand that, but it's not all rap. There are some amazing ballads in it as well. At least for us, this is the only Broadway show we've ever seen that doesn't have one "throw away" song. We ordered Disney Plus as soon as they announced this, and actually have been enjoying watching some Disney movies that we hadn't seen. We liked the updated Lion King a lot, but we *loved* Moana. I knew Lin Manuel Miranda co-wrote the soundtrack for that, but man...you can hear him all throughout. He has such a unique and interesting style. I'd say...give it a shot!

I knew that they often "videotaped" shows for archival purposes, but when I heard that they spent three days filming it, with an audience and then close-ups...with the original cast...I was so happy. Originally I read that Lin and the producers didn't want to sell it while they had so many productions out touring. I think they had 6 going (including Broadway) when the pandemic hit. By then I knew Disney purchased it and had a date for 2021. So when they said it was coming out July 3rd we were so psyched. We saw Mandy Gonzalez twice in the role of Angelica, and while she's wonderful, that's just such a demanding part to sing, and it just wasn't close to Renee' Elise Goldsberry's Angelica on the soundtrack. The woman who played her in San Juan was definitely closer, but still not quite there. Also...nobody can replace Daveed Diggs. So unique.

I am! Will be watching this weekend. Sadly I have to work on the premier day. My 16 year old is excited as well.

We are suppose to see the touring production exactly a year from now. 🤞

I just had this discussion yesterday with my dh. I have seen it live, he has not. 98% of the time, I agree, onstage first, with no spoilers. I won't even listen to the music first. But now that I have seen it, for him, I really believe he will get more out of it live, if he has seen it/heard the music first. Because of the rap, and some of it being so fast paced, it can be hard to understand. I think he will enjoy the live version better once he sees this. It's very powerful live.

Kind of the same reason, it's just not my type of music or show. I saw the original cast of In the Heights as well and did not love that one either. To me the music isn't memorable except for a couple songs, and it didn't really grab me. I didn't dislike it like I do some shows, it's just not my favorite.

I'm happy it's gotten so many people into musical theatre though.

A strong recommendation if you are someone that doesn't love "rap" or has a hard time following rapid fire lyrics - read the lyrics first.

This website has all the lyrics, with annotations about references, off hand remarks, etc, in the lyrics. The notes are by LMM, so straight from the horse's mouth. I'm a visual learner and was really worried if I didn't know what they were saying ahead of time, I'd never be able to follow it. I think I was right. It was so much better for me to have an idea what they were talking about.

I consider it great art because he took American history and made it accessible and meaningful for today, in a way that was enjoyable and moving. The word play is amazing, and it is no piece of fluff. The topics covered range from global politics to family relationships.

As a history teacher, I was a big fan with just the soundtrack. When the first touring production made it to our city, ticket sales were insane. I spent the entire morning trying to get tickets on-line to no avail. My sister-in-law, bless her heart, drove to the theatre, stood in line, and got some of the last seats available. It was awesome! The production added so much to the music. We had tickets to see it again this spring (thanks to SIL again), but it was cancelled due to covid. My entire family was jumping up and down to learn it was coming to Disney+. We'll be there Friday night!
