Halloween question for parents

Once my girls were school age they could take the bag to their room and eat it whenever they wanted too. I rationed it out when they were toddlers and maybe preschool but that's about it.

I do what you do OP. I let my kids have a few pieces Halloween night and then a few pieces for dessert when we have it. We usually pick out all the stuff we like and then they bring the rest of it to school where its donated to the troops. I still end up throwing some away.
This year a local dentist is paying kids $1 per pound for tehir candy so my kids are actually thinking of doing that.

Its funny that you call sweet tarts and laffy taffy garbage candy...those are my kids favorite :)

I let them go nuts!!! They can eat until they cant stand it! popcorn:: Then I throw stuff in their lunches to either throw away, share or eat.

I love the orthodontist you go to. I would love for mine to do that, and then to put the money towards my bill:thumbsup2 Two kids in braces is killing me!!!!!

OT: are there some kinds of candy that they cannot eat with braces? DD will be getting braces at the beginning of the year, so just curious. Paying for one is bad enough but TWO!! I feel for you!

My DD is all about trading. She will trade with friends for days. I let her have as much candy as she wants but she never over does it. Usually 2 weeks after Halloween most of it's still there and I toss it.

I let the kids eat several pieces on Halloween and then a couple of days later they are done. Our local dentist buys back candy and my kids would rather turn it in for cash than eat all the candy themselves. Of course before we take the candy I go through it and pick out all milky ways.

Halloween night is a free for all. The kids dump it all out on the table, trade as necessary, and are allowed to eat however much they want.

Then we go back to normal, which is dessert is allowed on weekends only (Fri, Sat, Sun).

I used to allow dessert every night, hoping to avoid the love that can come from limits. But I had to stop dessert at least some nights. I got tired of them "getting through" dinner to get to dessert. :goodvibes

DS 14 now limits himself a lot on the junk he eats. He suddenly decided this year he wants to obsess about fat and sugar content. DD 11 is currently in the sweets-crazed phase.

Oh yea, my dd just got braces 2 weeks ago and "the list" is still fresh in my mind.

Basically no "chewie" candy, including gum. It loosens the banding on the molars. The action of chewing with a sticky candy is the equivalent of pulling off the bands. That is pretty common sense there.

As far as "hard candy" suck on it only and don't crunch it.

No popcorn, Doritos, hard taco shells, etc because it may break a bracket.

Now of course kids do not follow all of this and some ortho's give out strict rules and some of them are more relaxed. The current ortho we have is VERY strict with the food rules. I have never heard a bigger list.;)

I have never worried about it just the rule that wrappers must go in the trash. I doubt there has been a year that either kid has consumed more than 10 pieces of candy not counting individual bags of things like goldfish. Basically my kids don't like things like air heads, fruit by the loop, hard caramel, nerds etc. They really only want the things like goldfish, pretzels, etc and perhaps a piece of chocolate.

The kids usually want to eat 1 or 2 pieces when we get home but their big thrill is going thru the candy to see what they got. They will pick what they want to keep and it lasts about a week (about 8-10 pieces). The rest they willingly tell dh to take to work. There is a guy dh works with that keeps a jar of candy on his desk and dh gives it to him. This year since Halloween is on a Sunday it will be out of the house Monday so just one night of temptation for me.

We give out a few pieces at a time.

I bring the rest to my student at school and he vaccums it up for me.
