This might sound like a stupid question, but what are the costume rules?

Are adults allowed to dress up? what are the rules to follow?

Thanks a bunch:goodvibes

If you are going to one of the Halloween Parties, then you can dress up. Outside of those, adults can't wear costumes.

Why is that? I've always known that Adults cannot wear costumes, but never understood why..

I think it has something to do with not wanting anyone to confuse costumed adult guests with official costumed characters--preserving the Disney magic and all that good stuff. Nobody is likely to confuse a five year old Cinderella with the official Disney Cinderella...however someone could confuse a really good costumed adult guest with the official Disney character--and Disney can't maintain quality control over interactions between costumed guests and regular guests the way they can between official characters and guests.

You can not dress as official character, no face mask, no fake/toy weapons..

Costume rules are at http://disneyland.disney.go.com/faq/parks/#parks-q11

Adults are only allowed to dress up in costume for the Halloween party, but MAYBE all day party days (I forget what they did last year). You can certainly be in costume from the time people with the tickets are allowed in without separate admission (3 PM Tuesdays/4 PM Fridays).

The rules above are that your eyes must be visible, but you can wear masks. You CAN dress as Disney characters for the party! But people dressed as Disney characters are officially not supposed to pose for photos with guests (realistically if you are not mistaken for an official Disney character you are probably fine). I don't remember if the above link says it but the Halloween page says basically, not too gory/adult.

Wait, you can or cannot dress as an official character for the Halloween party?? I am talking about adults, I assume it's always ok for the kids.

I am looking at getting a pretty elaborate princess costume - but now I need to know for sure if I can wear it. We would be entering Disney at the allowed time on Halloween Party night (3pm I believe for Oct 3rd party).

Thanks!!

Did you read the link that Eeee-va posted above? If not, take a look at it. It explains everything you need to know.

To answer your question, though, you can dress as an official Disney character as long as your costume does not include a weapon (even toy), does not drag on the ground, does not have sharp or pointed objects, does not include a mask which obstructs your vision, and your eyes must be visible at all times. Additionally, you cannot pose for pictures or sign autographs for other Guests.
