There was a discussion on the radio this morning that some schools are calling Halloween "Character Day". They were saying all the politically correct people have come up with this. I think it's ridiculous.

Has anyone heard of this? I'm hoping they will post more information about it on their website later.

No way that this comes from those who are "politically correct" (if, by that, you mean the "left"). The anti-Halloween folks are almost all of the religious right. If anything, this new name was an attempt to accomodate their objections while still allowing the kids to have fun dressing up.

My kids elementary school has ALWAYS (since my now 20yo attended at least) held "Career Day" on Halloween- the kids dress as "what they want to be when they grow up"

The week before has all sorts of people coming in to share their careers- and omg I just realized I'm supposed to be at the school in a few minutes lol-

Anyway- my 10yo dd is dressing as an artist- wearing an old shirt of her dad's that she has splattered with paint, carrying an artist palatte etc.

Ds 4yo- is dressing as a garbage man- he will wear his regular clothes and a garbage truck made from a box...

My oldest dd had done a SAHM once so that she could just wear her regular clothes ( think she carried a calander with lots of activities penciled in on it and a grocery list), but also did things like a rock star or dancer.

I know other area schools do story book characters- but again it is more than alternative Halloween costumes- they spend the week before doing literary activities with it.

I think it is a cute way to have some fun - frankly- I'd not want my kids in their Halloween costumes all day.

What "politically correct" people? I have only heard of things like this being done to accomodate certain religious beliefs which are anti-halloween. :confused3

Our school system doesn't allow dressing up on Halloween. They do have a Fall Festival, but there's no official mention of Halloween. Many of the surrounding school districts will instead do a "dress as your favorite storybook character" day so the kids can still dress up and have some fun.

Some of my favorite elementary school memories involve dressing up and participating in the school-wide Halloween parade. The junior class always had a Halloween carnival, complete with huge haunted house, to raise funds for the prom. Too bad there's not much of that anymore. :(

My niece is having a fall festival. No costumes allowed. She is in 1st grade public school.

I was stating what the radio station said. I don't know who or where they're talking about, but I'm trying to find something, but nothing's posted on their website yet.

I honestly don't think political correctness can be labeled right or left. It's a bi-partisan affliction...

How silly. They can call it anything they want (whoever "they" are) but it's still Halloween to me...and probably the majority of the population.

So are you saying you dress your son every day like a garbage man :lmao:

J/K sounds like a cute costume!!

LOL- well it is to avoid him wearing a school uniform- which is pretty close to what our garbage men wear- he will add work gloves, a hat, and plastic garbage bag or two...

LOL- it is all he can talk about- I had a few parents seriously question his "all about me" poster he did at the beginning of the year where he said he wanted to be a garbage man- the parents couldn't believe I "let" him put that on his poster- geez- he can't read I could have put what ever I wanted but since he had to present the poster alone at school- figured it was best to go with his answers...

My brother was totally obsessed with being a sanitation worker when he was young(we had a neighbor who used to bring the truck home at lunchtime). So cute!
