Halftime Show

Folks were comparing her with Houston.....Houston however will be the best Super Bowl SSB....because we were at war and her voice comforted us!!

As the proud owner of an in-home pole, I can confidently say that anyone knocking it hasn’t tried it. It takes an immense amount of strength and skill to even get up the darn thing. I watched her performance last night with an appreciation for the technique involved, not as some sexual display. Truthfully, the moves she was doing weren’t all that advanced, but they were made harder by the fact she was wearing a full body suit and didn’t have the advantage of having exposed skin to help grip the pole. A 50 year old woman doing that bit halfway into a performance of that magnitude when she’s presumably hot and sweaty and starting to tire, while wearing spandex, without an emergency bottle of Windex to degrease the pole... :lmao:There was ample opportunity for that part of the show to go terribly wrong. She gets nothing but respect from me.

Absolutely. The amount of hard work and dedication to be able to do this would be huge. I haven't tried and couldn't get close, but people seem to underestimate the effort and commitment it takes to dance any style.

Please re-read my post.....Christopher Cross is not an attractive man.....another man to add to your ton of Billy Joel's

Oh ... ha ha ha ha ha. I completely misunderstood your post. oops. Yeah, CC not on the best looking man list.

We can be like the pink Energizer bunny. We keep going and going . . . Rick Ocasek (RIP), Tom Petty (RIP), Elton John, Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler . . .

I also wonder how much a lack of familiarity with certain cultural norms contributes to the shock people feel when they see these performances. To complain about the amount of visible skin or hip gyrating in some Latin/Caribbean/African dance performances would be akin to complaining about the amount of footwork in Irish river dance, for example. Maybe you just didn’t know what to expect?

Mark me down for way over the top. I was embarrassed for 2 middle aged women in the age of equality dressing like strippers, thrusting about and jumping around on a stripper pole surrounded by kids nonetheless. It was not appropriate or ok at all to be televised during a show kids were also watching, imo. Time and place and that should not have been one of them.

Thankfully we still got a place like Disney, for now. The magic won't last forever.

If you liked it and are impressed with their abilities and feel they are role models for your children then good on you. Just don't be surprised others are taking a different path for our children, than sex sells.

It’s funny, my dd’s were competitive irish dancers (dd18 recently retired before college). Seeing all of these comments made me laugh at the comments on the irish dance boards about how obscene the ID costumes are getting. Full long sleeves, collarbones need to be covered, but lately the skirts have become so short that the girls’ hands can be seen 😂. A new ruling states that judges can make competitors over 14 to put on black tights if they feel the skirts are too short (they do wear kick pants obviously since the skirts fly up regardless of the length).

I like Jennifer Lopez, I guess you could say I'm a casual fan - I have some of her albums, seen some of her movies, followed her on and off and I even got the chance to see her concert last summer. J.Lo is a phenomenal performer and honestly I would have rather her performed for the whole show because I felt her songs were so cut up there was never a lot of time to get into them. The choreography was great, she looked stunning, and she's just a very skilled dancer and is extremely athletic. I didn't think for one second that what she wore and did on stage was at all shocking in terms of being too sexual. The music is about dancing, being in a club, partying (for the most part) so I think those leotards are a given - and she certainly can't dance in baggy clothing - it would look extremely odd and I don't think she should have to cover up if she doesn't want to. As already said, she's a showgirl, an entertainer, and these types of performances call for these types of costumes.

No, she's not a Billie Eilish - she'd look equally ridiculous in a showgirl/dancer outfit singing her type of music - it's not her thing. It doesn't mean Billie doesn't have to dress like that to sell music/win awards, it means her brand does not call for it. They're all pop music at the end of the day but they cater to different people.

As far as men not having to be attractive in the music industry, every "ugly" male listed in this thread has had tons of women swooning over them - if you've ever been to a rock concert, check out who's in the front row. These guys are in their 60's, and 70's and are deemed the hottest things ever by women young and old! No, they aren't wearing a J.Lo leotard, because men don't typically wear that type of outfit, but they sell sex in other ways (lyrics, movements, tight pants/t-shirts) - it's no different.

I've also seen plenty of male pop stars be sexual on stage - lifting their shirts, pouring water on themselves, tank tops and tight pants - the girls go crazy for them! The female pop stars take the heat though. Would the Backstreet Boys and *Nsync have had careers if they were't attractive men? How about One Direction and Justin Bieber? Let's face it, good looks go with pop music, and even rock stars who've been mentioned have sold sex as well.

Back to the actual halftime performance, While I enjoyed J.Lo, I thought Shakira was fine...I only know a few of her songs, and she only did a couple I know as I don't follow her.

I’m generally conservative, but I liked the performance. And I appreciated how they didn’t try to politicize the performance.

It was about what I would expect from both Shakira & J-Lo - I wasn’t surprised at all.

Shakira literally has a song called “These Hips Don’t Lie,” & has everyone forgotten J-Lo‘s iconic green dress?

Both have Latin roots & were celebrating their Latin culture w/ fun, sexy, upbeat “club” type music.

They were in Miami. It was the Super Bowl. I don’t expect the halftime performances to be tame. It’s one of the reasons why when my husband & I were youth group leaders we turned the TV off during the halftime performance during our youth group Super Bowl parties.

Maybe I’ve watched too much Dancing w/ the Stars, but Latin music IS sexy & suggestive. The costumes are risqué.

I didn’t see it as a “stripper pole” - it was just a pole. She wasn’t stripping. There are classes all over that teach pole dancing.

I liked how J-Lo’s daughter sang w/ her & how the different girl groups came out to perform at the end.

I thought they both did great!

And I didn’t find the performance demeaning to women. Did anyone find Adam Levine’s performance demeaning to men when he ripped his shirt off?

My daughter who is a budding feminist said, “Demeaning to women? Shakira & J-Lo choreographed it THEMSELVES. They can dance however they want to.”

If I looked as good as J-Lo, I’d be buying my groceries in a bikini.

I’d rather let my kids watch the sometimes sexy halftime performers and instead shield their eyes from the wife-beating, sexual assaulting, raping, robbing, drug trafficking, weapon wielding, murdering, racketeering, dog fighting role models that are gracing the field during the rest of the game. ;)

Absolutely!!!!!!

I have been arguing this point all day.

The same people who found the performance demeaning to women were watching a football game sponsored by the NFL, an organization that has never demonstrated any kind of respect toward women.

I‘d rather my daughter be a backup dancer for J-Lo than the wife of (many, not al!) an NFL player.

What do you feel the meaning of having children in cages was about?

😂 a bit judgmental of those who aren’t clutching their pearls over this performance, wouldn’t you say?

The point is that our daughters (and sons but the whole women empowerment thing) can be anything and do anything they want. Your child should take the path she wants and she takes. Not you or anyone else should choose that path.

I don’t know?

I didn’t see it as some kind of evil child slavery kinda thing, though.

Possibly because I wasn’t looking for that.

Both Shakira & J-Lo are mothers, so I don’t think (I don’t actually know, of course, because I wasn’t in on the choreography plans) that either would mean anything nefarious or evil by the cages.

I guess, if one wants to be “interpretative,” one could say that, when the children were in cages, they were being silenced & not free to be themselves - but, then at the end, the children were out of the cages & singing about being loud & free & letting their voices be heard? I can’t remember the exact lyrics.

Or maybe it was just as simple as, ”Hey, it’d look cool if the kids were in these suspended devices!”

I have no idea.

I just caught it on Youtube and thought they put on a great show.
J-LO is truly fabulous at 50 and Shakira looks like she's not even in her 30's.
I'm not bothered by the skimpy outfits and sexually suggestive dancing- I grew up watching Madonna, this stuff is nothing new.

I was going to mention the same thing about Madonna - I grew up with Madonna and then was a teenager (16) when Britney hit the scene - what I saw last night was incredibly tame. I didn't think twice about it until I read other opinions.
