A few days ago I purchased the DVC after a short and not very informative presentation. After getting home I started to do my homework on the net and find that finding places to go by RCI are nearly impossible to secure. This was to be a big reason for purchasing and was told all the world was open for $99 a week through RCI. I live more than a thousand miles form Dis and I don't wish to be forced to vacation there exclusively and I also don't wish to sell or rent my points. I bought them to use.
I've read the why I love my DVC thread and found that all the answers were I love Disney.
Is what I'm reading about RCI being very hard to get a place true? I've only a few days left to cancel in the ten day grace period so any info as to why I should or shouldn't cancel would be most appreciated.

Cancel,

Don't buy DVC for RCI - its expensive and Disney's RCI membership is limited. There are many far better timeshares to buy that you can get resale for much less that are much better for what your intended use is.

Others will chime in soon, but to me, it sounds like you should cancel.

You can probably buy a timeshare much, much cheaper on the resale market that will get you to the RCI resorts you are interested in.

Buying Disney points are best suited to staying at Disney every year or every other year. That's what I do, that's why I bought. It doesn't mean you can't trade out.

You should make a list of where you want to travel to. Then, if timeshare is what you want, look for a resale timeshare that best suits those wants. DVC is best suited to staying on Disney property.

Also are the Disney Cruises a good value as we love to cruise. I have a lot of reservations about a cruise with half a boat load of unruly children.

DVC points are best used for DVC resort stays. IMO all other possibilities are just that, possible with restrictions and limitations and can be changed anytime Disney wishes to do so.

I suggest that you cancel now, do some more learning and buy later if you decide to do so.

DVC isn't for everyone.

Something I should have added is another reason for buying was children and grandkids. They seemed somewhat pleased about it but we also don't want to burden them with forced vacations at one venue.
Would it be a good thing to hold on to for the future even though it's not predictable?
At the presentation most of the hard questions I asked were answered with " Trust the Mouse " or Dis doesn't or wouldn't do that. Hmmmmmm.

I also would cancel. If you are primarily interested in rci options, I would buy a VERY inexpensive time share somewhere else and trade. I bought a timeshare for $1200 in Daytona Beach. I use it to trade all over the world, including Disney. My maintenance fees are $300 a year. There are definitely much cheaper options out there if you are just looking to trade through RCI. Feel free to message me for more detailed information.

Cancel, do your homework, and buy resale to save thousands of dollars. "Trust The Bill"

Depends on the location, time of year, resort sought, etc. I think it's a mischaracterization to say that RCI destinations are "nearly impossible to secure." But it's a situation where you really need to research how trades work in order to maximize your odds for success.

Right now...in October...you probably won't get a Colorado ski week for this winter or a prime beach destination for Spring Break '15. But those who planned further in advance have had success.

All of that said, I wholeheartedly agree with the others that there are cheaper / more effective ways to vacation than using DVC to trade worldwide. The point banking and borrowing provisions mean that DVC ownership can still "work" even if you only use the points once ever 2-3 years. In that situation, buy fewer points and combine 2-3 years worth for one trip.

IMO, if you are planning to trade through RCI any more than 10-15% of the time, I think you need to reevaluate your approach.

Something I should have added is another reason for buying was children and grandkids. They seemed somewhat pleased about it but we also don't want to burden them with forced vacations at one venue.

Well, I wouldn't buy unless you have very specific use in mind. DVC is an expensive purchase. It makes no sense to buy with the mindset of "at least we have it whenever we want to go to Disney."

Even using points for the DVC resorts requires advance planning. All owners have a 4-month booking advantage to secure a room at the resort they own. But taking advantage of that feature requires planning more than 8 months out. From my experience, owners who cannot schedule their visits more than 8 months in advance tend to be disappointed.

As for the impact on children/grandchildren, depends on their personal mindset. There are many people who would be thrilled with annual visits to Walt Disney World. Others...not so much.

At the presentation most of the hard questions I asked were answered with " Trust the Mouse " or Dis doesn't wouldn't that. Hmmmmmm.

Depends entirely on what you asked. :confused3 The DVC program has been around for nearly 25 years now so obviously there is some track record with regard to their decision making.

The legally binding documents are vague enough in many areas to allow Disney to maneuver. It's similar to the impact that your local government / homeowner's association / employer could have on other areas of your life.

Any decision Disney makes impacts not only current owners but their ongoing ability to market Disney Vacation Club to new buyers. At the end of the day, every current & prospective owner must reconcile what COULD happen with what they really believe MAY happen.

no. DVC does not work well for what you want to do. DVC is a nice option if you travel to wdw annually, but not for trading for other timeshares or cruises - for that, it is a giant waste of money.

cancel and take 6 months to a year doing research on other timeshares at TUG (linked). you can find inexpensive (possibly as low as $1 upfront on ebay with annual dues half to 2/3 of DVC's) timeshares that can be traded through RCI which might be a better fit for you. (but cash vacations will always give you the most options with the fewest hoops to jump through.)

this person assumed the best and didn't ask the hard questions. it doesn't always end well...

No don't buy for future use. I'll reiterate what most said, only buy DVC if you want to travel to Disney each use. Don't get caught up in the moment of buying DVC if it's not what you want.

I agree. Cancel. Do your homework. It looks like there are much better options out there for your needs. If you do decide to buy into DVC in the future resale will save you thousands.

Please come back and let us know what you decide to do. :)

Sounds pretty much that you already know you should cancel. IMO you're sounding like you're still in the vacation search age phase. We did that in our early 50's and that bucket's been kicked. :goodvibes

We also live over 1000 miles from FL and bought DVC because we vacation fairly exclusively at WDW FL. The other properties are nice - for a change. We occasionally throw another spot in but frankly for the buck bank, concentration of experiences and the ability to spend a week without having to use a car it fits.

No offense but this is a good lesson for everyone: Do your homework before you buy.

Absolutely, and don't sign until you get home, think a little and DO some homework. Never sign at a presentation. Everything is geared towards that.

No offense taken. I deserve a good slap.:thumbsup2

I'll get back to let everyone know the outcome ASAP. Thanks

Dont kick yourself too hard. That is why you get the ten days to cancel. I never sign anything on the spot. That lesson was learned the hard way. Good luck.

Cancel and educate yourself so when/if you do buy it'll be a much better choice and a blessing to you and your family. In reality DVC ONLY is a reasonable choice for DVC stays. Nothing else gives enough guarantees and/or savings to make them worthwhile, very few options even hit the mark in one one of those areas. RCI is restrictive and risky and often unsuccessful. EVERY cash type exchange option will cost you more money long term than simply buying less points and paying cash for those options. IF you're trying to do Disney and non Disney, non DVC timeshares are going to be a better choice in almost every situation if only one timeshare is desired. Sometimes buying both is the best option though. I would strongly encourage you NOT to buy for RCI, DCL, etc unless you want to complicate your life and throw away money. There are absolutely NO situations where buying to cruise, for RCI or other cash type exchanges is a reasonable choice.

Cancel for now. Even if you decide later to buy in maybe consider buying less points if you live far away. We are UK and bought enough points to go one every three years initially then bought more with an every other year plan. When we do Europe we will do with cash

If you have any doubt, just cancel. You won't loose anythig, DVC will still be there in a few weeks or months. Even the "unmissable and limited" promotions are regularly extended or improved.

And for what you said, I'd stay cancel and don't buy.

I agree with the cancel.(When a board full of owners are telling you this, what does that say?)

Looks likes OP is leaning that way. Disney relies on quick decisions and the fact that most are too slow to reconsider.

Let us know what you do.
