Our Hakuna Matata trip did not mean no up and at ‘ems because I knew that if we didn’t hit the parks early that the heat would be unbearable by early afternoon. Hayley knows the drill well, but I wasn’t sure how Alli would do at getting up that early. Mickey called at 7:00 am and it only took a couple of “one more minutes” before the girls were up.

We had decided to pass on early entry days since the crowds were pretty low and that strategy seemed to work out well for us.

Today was a day for the Magic Kingdom. Our trips always start with the Magic Kingdom. We arrived in time to see the opening ceremony with Mickey and the gang, which always makes me teary- eyed.

The girls then made a beeline to Space Mountain and we were able to do Buzz, Pooh, Snow White, Peter Pan, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, Pirates and Haunted Mansion and the TTA before noon.

For lunch we stopped at the Plaza fast food area. The girls had…what else…chicken strips and a cheese pizza while I had a nice chicken garden salad. After stopping at the candy shop for a candy apple we hopped on the bus to go back to the hotel for the afternoon.

As soon as I put on my bathing suit and walked out to the pool, the big black clouds rolled in, and with a crack of lightening the pool was closed. The rain wasn’t letting up so we went back to the room.

The girls made some popcorn and watched some TV while I went out exploring. I stopped to talk to some of the CMs at the lookout area and learned all sorts of interesting things about the animals and how they train them to come in each day for their daily check ups. I then ventured to the stairwell at very end of the Kudu Trail where the Arusha and Sunset savannas meet. There is a fence dividing the two savannas and right at the fence there were 3 male giraffes on the Sunset savanna side and a female on the Arusha side. They were so close to the stairwell and they were so amazing to watch. I ran to the closest house phone and called the room to have the girls come see them with me. We stood and watched them for about an hour in our little private viewing area, as there was no one else there.

We were going back to the MK that night to see Spectromagic , but before we went back we went to Jiko when it opened and sat in the bar area and ordered a couple of flatbreads for our dinner. The flatbreads there are to die for. Last year Cass and I had the Olive & Cheese flatbread and I had been dreaming of having it again since then! We ordered the Olive & Cheese flatbread and the Chicken flatbread that was equally as yummy. I also had a very nice South African Merlot. The girls loved the flatbreads and made me promise we would have them again before we left.

On our way back to the MK we had the best driver ever. His name was Mark and he had us laughing so hard I had tears running down my face. He had us singing songs…one being “The Wheels on the Bus” He insisted on signing the second verse himself and as he sang, “The driver on the bus goes…beep, beep, beep…he was honking the bus horn as we drove along. It was one of the highlights of the trip. Some real pixie dust.

Back at the MK we went to Carousel of Progress, one of my favorites, which I hadn’t seen in years. I love those classic Disney attractions! From there the girls went on Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain. Since the rain had let up it was very humid so I decided to sit them out.

By then it was time for Spectromagic to start and with that, the rain started up again. Not a heavy rain but a light, steady rain. The parade went on and we were able to watch it from under the shelter of the shooting arcade and had a great ( and dry!) view. Since it was still raining we decided we would pass on Wishes, but were able to watch it as we made our way down Main Street. Of course by the time we made it to the bus the rain has stopped!

The girls were pretty pooped out by the time we got back to the hotel so they went right to bed, while I sat on the balcony with a glass of wine and jotted down my trip notes for the day. Again, lots of animals were out on the savanna….so peaceful and beautiful.

Really enjoying your TR, SuAnne!
What a fabulous bus driver - we've had great ones but never one who leads us in song:teeth:
I can tell you feel the same way about AKL as I do. Isn't it just Paradise?
I will do what you did and sit at the bar and enjoy one of those flatbreads and a glass of wine w/ DD!
Thanks!

Another great day. The flatbread sounds delicious. I remember last year when Cass had a bout with food poisoning, and it took quite a while to get her appetite back. I think she needs another crack at the flatbread. ;)

Ha Ha! I really do not miss your drill sargeant early mornings... the only time I have ever made a park for opening is when I was with you! :p
