:simba: Hakuna Matata Team Bios :simba:

Windwalker, aka Dave aka Panda- I'm 58 and live in a small town in Kentucky. I don't run I walk, race walk actually. I have qualified for another shot at the National Senior Olympics. Married to Sally.

es45 aka Elizabeth- I'm 42 and married with 2 young daughters. I ran my first 13.1 in the 2011 Princess Half.

Pudge The Fish, aka Emily- My DH and I will be doing the DL half in Sept. This will be our first half marathon. I still consider myself new to running, though I've done 2 5k (including the 2009 DL 5k) and one 10k.

Villians_Rock, aka Eva – I am 31 years old, married to Jordan (proud WISH supporter) and have just recently had our first baby, Gage. We currently live near Cleveland, OH. I'm a full time staffing coordinator for Continental Airlines and my hubby sells Harley Davidsons. I ran my first race in 2007 and have since ran 5Ks, 10Ks, one half marathon and completed the Disney Full Marathon in 2009. Before the baby, I was most comfortable running and training at a half marathon distance.

GirltheGecko aka Hope- I grew up in the Pittsburgh area. When I was a teenager, I was heavily into martial arts, unfortunately due to school and time, I had to quit. I met Nick, moved to NH, and I gained some weight. I watched my mother struggle with obesity all her life, so Nick's family and I decided to work at trying for a half marathon at WDW.

flipflopmom, aka Taryn – I will be 35 on Sept. 5. I am a Kindergarten Teacher, working on my master's degree in my "spare” time. Married for 12 years, have 2 girls. Oldest is 10, and a competitive gymnast. Her gym is 45 minutes away, so I spend a lot of time on the road. Youngest is 3, and a tons of fun! I haven't run a race yet, but looking for a 5K.

LynnG, aka Lynn, (of Lynn and Scott)- 60 years old, retired, we are both Disneyholics. We have been members of DVC since it started. I am a walker, I used to try to run, but knee surgery last August which I am still trying to recover from, I only walk now. I have done several half marathons, mostly Disney ones. I have 2 malamutes that are my walking companions at home.

MaryJ aka Mary- I am 53 years old, and live in a small town in Southwestern Indiana. I will be married to DH (Ken) for 34 years in July. We have 3 daughters and 2 granddaughters. I walk/run my races. I did my first big race (WDW Half) when I was 52. Before that I had done only a few 5K's, mostly walking.

Motomiker, aka Mike – I have lived in and around Lake in the Hills Illinois. I have worked in the grocery business for almost 20 years. Married in 2008 to my wife (Liz). One son (Robert), working on baby number two. I was diagnosed with colon cancer in the fall of 2009 and had surgery. I am still cancer free! My other interests are varied: Disney nut, Disney pins collector, love movies (mostly Sci-fi), scrapbooking, travel, a New England Patriots fan, and 5ks . I did my first adventure race recently, and am planning some more.

Nikkilala, aka Nikki- Married to Ryan at WDW in 2007. Currently a Physical Therapist Assistant student graduating in 2012. Is a wogger (walker with a little jogging mixed in) Lives in South West Michigan where she was born and raised! Loves Disney and will do anything for an excuse to travel there, including a half marathon

Saylan – I'm from the frosty north of Canada. I'm very new to running (officially started October 14, 2010). I'm training for the Disney Princess 1/2 and it'll be my first official marathon of any length. I'm a Disney addict (been 16 times). I figured if anything can motivate me to run it would be Disney. I live with my partner (and Disney virgin) and a demon of a cat.

piglet24, aka Regina- I grew up in Idaho and married my “birthday buddy”, Kyle, in 2006. I started running to help manage some stress about a year and a half ago, and have continued because I enjoy it. Of course, I love Disney and am always happy to have another reason to go!

DisneyGerry, aka Gerry - Lives in Celebration, FL, transplant from MD after numerous vacations to visit central FLA. Trying to kick up my race schedule this year starting with the Disney Half in January. Play and work in the theme park corridor

bunnyfoo, aka Vicky - My name is Vicky and I live in Toronto, Canada. I started running back in 2008 so I could lose weight become more active. I wasn't into low carb diets but it seemed like a lot of runners had great abs AND they ate carbs. I thought "Hey I can do that!" :goodvibes I started as an indoor treadmill runner and eventually worked my way outside and signed up for my first race - the Minnie 15K. As they say, the rest is history! I have had my share of bumps, bruises and sprains but have had a lot of fun along the way and have met a lot of great people including everyone on Hakuna Matada! Three years later, running, working out and healthy eating have all become a part of my lifestyle. My other interests are movies, reading, road trips and baking!

Happy July Team!!!

I started the month with a good 4 mile training walk on a rolling course in 48:31, average 12:07 per mile. Nothing to write home about but still another step forward.

I will have my first race of the year on the 16th. I haven't really raced in about 3 years, it blows my mind to realize that! I've done eveents but I've either been sick, injured or untrained. I've been training will for about 4 months and making slow but steady progress. Goal for this 2 mile walk race on the 16th is to break 23 min.

I will have 2 half marathons a week apart in Sept. I'm in half marathon shape now and by then I hope to be able to break 2:45 for the half.

Of course the Goofy also looms on the Horizon, I plan to be so darn ready for that race, the last 2 years I've survived it, this one I'm going to RACE!

Dave:hippie:

Good Evening Team! Happy Canada Day!

Vicky - Thanks for the July thread!

Dave - Take care of your teeth! Good luck on your first race of the year!

Emily - We will be doing the same with the Tour de France - starts tomorrow, will be taping it for later viewing, as it starts during our bike riding time!

Elizabeth - Hope your knee is better, is that what is also known as “Runners Knee”? The osteochondritis part sounded familiar. Try cycling, it is easy on the knees!

AFM - We took it easy today with just 5 miles (wind was blowing 20 mph - made cycling difficult!) on the bikes, then I took the dogs for a loop - 1.28 miles - still going slow on Taiya’s foot.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Sally and I are heading out for an hour of brisk walking and then we are going to drive to Ft Campbell and take in the 4th of July weekend with my homies at the 101st.

Have a great weekend team.

Dave:hippie:

Hello Team and Happy July!

Elizabeth - Good to hear you don't need surgery, pixiedust: your knee starts to improve soon.

Dave - Looks like you're getting some good training in, good luck on meeting your race goals.

Lynn - Did you enjoy watching the Tour de France? Is the entire race televised?

AFM - I did my long run, 5 miles, yesterday morning. I got out by 7:30am which is pretty early for me, it was sunny but not unbearably hot. It went well, though my feet and legs felt pretty tired at the end.

Last night, I stubbed my toe pretty hard against the sofa leg. It's still sore this morning. Today is a rest day, so hopefully it will better by tomorrow.

The US had a good soccer match against Columbia yesterday and are through to the World Cup quarterfinals :cool1: Our cable went out so I didn't record the other game yesterday morning

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

Emily

Hi Team! Sorry I vanished and went MIA lately. I came back to the boards a couple days ago and figured I'd wait for the new month thread to pop back in. :goodvibes I hope everyone is doing well in this warm, humid summer.

Happy Fourth of July to our American team mates and belated Happy Canada Day to our Canadian ones. :cheer2:

Emily: Oooh! I hate hurting my toes. I hope it gets better fast so you don't risk getting a black one while running.

AFM: I've been trying to get back into a set schedule for working out and running since I've been slacking and I'm hoping this week I can do it. I find I make excuses to go home and relax, especially with the lovely sun we've been having.

I haven't yet been given any time off for September (I'm scared to ask for it) so I dunno if I'll be able to find a flight down and back to DL in time for the half. It's also becoming a challenge to find flights that are affordable as well as manageable time-wise.

I also need to ask for January time off for the Donald too so I need to time this well so I'm not bombarding with time off requests.

On the upside, I just got approved for time off to take some courses this year and early next year. I spoke with the program offering my certificate (the one I wouldn't be able to complete since the last course was during a time I'd not be allowed to take vacation) and they are allowing me to substitute so I'll get to finish it afterall! :cool1: I have to register up front though and since some of the courses don't complete until the end of May next year, I won't be reimbursed until then which sucks cause it's about 2200 dollars.

Anyway, here's to a new month, a new week, and hopefully a new resolve to go to the gym on a regular basis and get my running back on track. I think I still have time to get back on course for the DL, I just need to not slack off.

Happy July 4th! Hope everyone in the States is enjoying the day off :) Meanwhile in Canada, it's back to the grind for us as Canada Day was on Friday.

Dave - Good job on your miles and your pace is awesome! I struggle to run that fast somedays  Glad to hear the visit to the dentist went well! I have my checkup next week so I'm not looking forward to it. Was the repairman able to fix your A/C? Not sure how the weather's been in your part of the country but it's been really hot here the past few days. Safe travels to you and Sally!

Elizabeth - I laughed when you said the doc diagnosed you with OCD! I'm glad to hear that you won't need surgery though. Did he give you any exercises to help strengthen the area?

Emily - I wish I had an ice cream maker! How did the coconut ice cream turn out? Sounds yummy. Did you decide on a resort for January? I hear all the cool kids are staying at Pop Century

Lynn Did you and Scott manage the 50 miler you were talking about? With all the miles you guys are putting in, you'll probably have enough to cross the country and then by the end of the year :) pixiedust: for Taiya!

Mike - Awww shucks! I got a really cool raspberry color! It was really nice not having to do anything for a few hours! I can't wait to hear about Liz's tri! That's so exciting! Sounds like you guys have the same hot weather we did on the weekend! Great patio weather but just a bit too hot for running.

Saylan - Welcome back! That's great news about your courses! It's always nice when they're covered by work. It's the same here for course reimbursement - you pay upfront but don't get reimbursed until you can show you passed or the course is done. Is London close to Detroit? There might be some cheaper options if you fly out of an American airport.

AFM - I had my massage/mani/pedi on Thursday which was awesome! It was nice to sit and not think about anything for a few hours. I did a five miler on Friday and then my 13 miler on Saturday. Both days were hot but that was partially from me not getting out the door at a reasonable hour. The 13 miler was tough - I took my Fuel Belt and four bottles of liquid (water and Gatorade) with me. I tried to conserve but it was too hot and I started feeling naseous. I felt better once I started drinking more but ran out by the time I got to mile 10. So I slowed down a lot for the last three and did a lot of walking so that I wouldn't overheat.

I also baked an upside down chocolate pear cake. It got mixed reviews - I think because people weren't keen on the combination of pear and chocolate. I liked it  And if anyone is thinking of making an upside down cake with carmel - don't use a springform pan. They're not leak proof. I found out the hard way.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Happy Independence Day to all my fellow Americans! We are having some friends over tonight for burgers, etc. Our DD and her family came in over the weekend and camped at a nearby state park. Ken and I were "day campers" meaning that we spent part of Friday and all of Saturday at the park with them, but we came home and slept in our own beds at night.

Unfortunately, the clumsy side of me made an appearance. While trying to get one leg over the picnic table seat, I caught my foot on the bench, tripped and fell into the side of the camper. Of course, I managed to hit the spot where the hinge sticks out right in my side. So far, there is only a tiny bruise, but boy does it hurt! I can't even imagine going out for a run because it feels like I've also twisted my spine out of place. Luckily, I had all ready made an appointment with the chiro tomorrow for "routine maintenance" tomorrow, so hopefully he can start to get me straightened out! And, hope I feel better by Sunday when Ken and I will be celebrating our 35th anniversary!!! (the actual date; real celebration will take place in DL for half marathon.)

Vicky....so envious of you and your mani/pedi. I think I might try to get in for a pedi tomorrow. Just have to let them know to keep the massage chair turned off. Right having ANYTHING pushing on my back sound painful!

Saylan...hope you can get things worked out for DL. I was really looking forward to meeting you there.

Mary: Me too. I'm not sure even if I get to go, that I'll have a whole lot of time (flying down just for the race) but I'd hate to miss out on meeting my awesome team mates.

Vicky: Yeah, it's great. I had a big discussion with HR too because, like your work, we don't get reimbursed until the course is done and we submitted proof of completion. Two of the courses are this fall (October and November) but two aren't until May 2012 so I was inquiring to find out if I can apply for advance reimbursement since I'd have to wait so long (which they offer on some courses but not all). The end answer was "No, you should wait closer to the dates of the courses". Normally I'd agree, but by registering before June 30th, I got a 10% discount which allowed me to fit in one more course at no cost to myself (saved about 240$) whereas without it I'd go over my allottment of reimbursement money for the year. With the discount, the courses come out to the exact penny of my allottment which is hilarious.

I can't believe you ran out in this heat! It's crazy right now. Did you guys get the bizarro storm this weekend too?

Did the mani/pedi people mess up your feet for running at all? I saw a lot of warning to not let them do things to your feet due to the caluses and such that you build up with running mileage.

I am actually looking to fly out of Detroit. I've looked at LAX and SNA so I'm going to try again. It looks like though we'll either have to leave the day of the race or risk being really tired on the Tuesday since none of the flights seems to get in till late without costing a fortune.

AFM: Speaking of fortunes, I'm thinking of trying to make fortune cookies. They look like fun and slightly different from your normal bake-and-forget cookies. My twin's going to have a baby soon so I was thinking of making some for her when I take her baby shower gifts over this week.

Hey everyone sorry been away for quite a few days.

Visited Quebec City then headed down to spend the Canada Day/4th of July weekend down in Maine with friends.

WIll catch up but right now need to catch up on laundry:rolleyes1

Hello Team (if you'll have me back)

Sorry I have been AWOL!!

Vicky has been following my Facebook updates and knows that I have been SUPER busy with school! Well school is winding down and the Marathon training is starting up!

I'm starting training with a new victim....I mean friend on Saturday! We are going to be doing the Grand Rapids Half Marathon on Sun Oct 16! This will be her first half and my second!

I hope you'll have me back!

Good Afternoon Team! Happy 4th of July!

Vicky - We have never gotten in a 50 miler, but still have been putting on a lot of miles!

Kim - Hope you had a good weekend!

Dave - Hope you had a good weekend!

Emily - We do enjoy watching Tour de France, not the entire race is televised, but a good portion - about 4 hours each morning is real time, then there are highlight shows for 1 to 2 hours each for the rest of the day - just about all Versus televises for these 3 weeks! Hope the toe is better soon!

Mary - Happy Anniversary!

Saylan - Welcome back! Good news about the courses! Good luck getting time of for DL!

Nikki - Welcome back!

AFM - Saturday be basically took the day off, did get the lawn mowed, Sunday we started out for 30 miles, but Scott blew a tire after 18, this time we fixed the tire on the road and got home for 22 miles, then we decided to go out for a “Social ride” with the local bike club, it was over 90 degrees, and only 4 of us showed up, so we put another 16 miles on the bike for a total of 38 miles for the day. I got dehydrated in the heat, felt terrible the rest of the day. Today we got in 25 miles (with no blowouts!) - we have been riding before breakfast, just a quick snack, so again, it is hard for me to do well, tomorrow I will go for more food before the ride, then we watched our taped Tour de France while eating more like brunch - as it is about 10am. I have been getting dogs out for early walk around the block (1.28 miles) each morning before our bike rides. It is hot (95) again today (actually cooler now that we had a storm go thru), but is supposed to be back to more normal (80‘s) temps for the rest of the week.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hey I didn't get any notification of responses...glad I came to check.

HI Nikki, always welcome back, life gets in the way no worries.

Hi Lynn, wow you guys are doing some serious biking. Good for you.

Trying to get back it it this morning. After vacationing for almost a week time to get my trainning and eatting back on track.

Hi everyone!

Nikki - The door never closes around here! Welcome back! I think school work should come before DISBoards anyway. It's always a blast to train with someone who's doing their first race! Which training plan are you guys following?

Kim - Sounds like a great trip! I haven't been to Quebec City in years! And yes, laundry is the worst part of coming back. You should make your guys take care of it for you! My eating went out the window this weekend too - lots of BBQ and sweets  Any other road trips planned for the summer? How's your training coming along for Acura and Midsummer's?

Saylan - I told the esthetician ahead of time that I run and needed to keep my nails short. I have a corn/callus on my baby toe (it's always been there) and I asked her to leave it. She didn't seem to care.

That's too bad about the reimbursement of courses, especially with the price on some of them. Did you tell them that you got a discount for registering early which is why you did it?

I had the same problem trying to find flights to DL from Toronto or Buffalo. There didn't seem to be any direct flights from Buffalo and even though there are three different airports in the DL area, they were all equally expensive.

I didn't know you had a twin! That's cool :) I'll bet you can get really creative with the cookies! You might even be able to find some take out box containers with the wire handles at Michael's or Bulk Barn.

We had a bit of a storm on Saturday night. Lots of lightning and thunder and a bit of heavy rain but I don't think it lasted too long.

Lynn - I hear ya on the dehydration! It's crazy how quickly it can happen in this hot weather. How common are blowouts on long distance rides? Are they easy to fix?

Mary - pixiedust: I hope you're okay and you didn't hurt yourself too badly! That sounds really painful. If it makes you feel any better, if I had been there, I would have tripped over something too. Was your chiro able to straighten things out again? Good idea to take it easy on the running for now. And happy (early) anniversary! What a milestone! Congrats to you both :)

AFM - I did a training session at the gym last night with lots of leg exercises - straight leg deadlifting, weighted lunges, hamstring curls, jump squats ... and some horrible exercise of running while pushing a heavy bag of sand across the gym floor

I did end up making the gooey butter cake. It was quite yummy but the bottom came out too dry. I think I might try it again with a little bit more butter or adding some sour cream for moisture.

I'd better get back to work! Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Vicky: Yeah, I specifically mentioned the discount but they didn't see that it should matter all that much (to be fair, the discount means I'm able to fit in another course, so more money they're obliged to pay me).

I'm scared to get a mani or pedi (I'm trained in doing them but never had one done). I'm super sensitive and I think they'd feel like tickling.

Well, she's a non-biological twin. Our moms were (and still are) best friends and both went into labour on the same day, same hospital, next door rooms. We're both blonde and blue eyed (regardless that all our parents are brunettes, lol) and we spent every birthday together so we consider ourselves twins.

That's a great idea about the take-out boxes! I'm going to try and make the cookies tonight and if it works then I'll pick up a box on my way home tomorrow.

Yeah, we had hail on top of the storm. It was crazy brutal!

I've done that same pushing across the floor exercise (for me they fold a mat over, put an upside down bench/stool on it and put a disc weight on that of about 45 pounds). I hate that so much but I know it's good. I just find the position hard to breathe in sometimes.

Lynn: Thanks for the welcome! It sounds like you're putting n crazy miles on the bike. I'm jealous as I don't think I could ever manage that.

AFM: Like Vicky, I did legs last night. My trainer's still off with a cast so I did my own workout of 1-legged sit squats, low box squats, step-ups with a bench, box push (like Vicky lol), stair sprints, and reverse lunges with weights. Definitely felt good to get back into the saddle. Now to stay there!

I'm hoping to squeeze in a short maintenance run today after my doctor's appointment to get back on track with training in the off chance I get approved for the DL 1/2.

Hi Team!

Looks like everyone is still at it, hot weather and all..

Dave~ I'm glad the dentist wasn't too rough on you! I have had two extractions and they are prepped for titainium implants, which I will probably never get. One is $3000 and the other is about $7000. If I was rich, yes...
You will do great in your race on the 16th! I can tell you are ready and pumped!

Mary~ Midwestern girls are tough! Way to shake off the tumble!

Lynn~ I have always liked the Pacific Coast (motorcycle), is yours the refridgerator white color? It's a great bike that never got the good reviews it deserved.

Eva~ are you out there? I miss you!

Vicky~ Hah! Made you blush! How bout I get us some fastpasses for the Winnie the pooh ride when we are down there in January? :thumbsup2

AFM~ I ran with Rick on Saturday and we got to know each other a little better. We are planning a get together with the wives when we can work out our schedules. It's nice having a teamate so close!
I ran/walked ten miles this morning with a pace of 10:48. The temp climbed about ten degrees while I was on the bikepath, and it got toasty!
Liz is getting pumped/nervous about her tri on Sunday. I think she will do fine. We pick up her packet on Thursday and I suspect it will be an interesting few days with taper madness and race hopes taking hold of her. :goodvibes It's and Olympic distance, and she is planning to finish in about three hours. I know she will do well as she has been training (overtraining) like she is doing a half ironman.
I hope everyone had a great 4th/Canadian day. I worked all weekend. The store was really busy, but it was worth working as it is triple time pay. Ka-Ching!
Anyway, train on team! -Mike :cool2:

Hi guys.

Mike I have a condition where the bone under my teeth erodes away causing my teeth to loosen. Unfortunately no amount of exercise and good habits help. I agree with the $10,000 having more important places to go. I was approached with that option also, even offered easy payments.

Training has been light this week with having to work day shift and stuff to do after work. Tomorrow I meet my group for a good 6.8 on the trails. I feel like I'm getting better each week and hope to be race ready soon. I still need to get some regular speed intervals.

The world masters competition is being held this week in Sacramento, I have a bunch of friends that are there to take their best shot. I'm cheering for and in awe of some of their walking times.

I still have no air condition, hopefully this week it will be repaired, they had to order relays.

Dave:hippie:
