Hakuna Matada - Chilly November

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - The muffins turned out pretty good.

Dave - Our weather is better than yours, but only until later today when a cold front is headed in and snow predicted.

Regina - Would a call to the company get your address accepted - we had that problem a couple of times when we first moved in here because it was a new street - but then address went thru long before the street showed up on any of the GPS’s.

Sue - Glad to hear you liked Mary Poppins. My dogs only bug us for food, they do get excited when they think we are headed out for a walk (or a ride in the car), but about a half hour before meal time they will start with the howling, and bugging us, until they are fed.

Rick - Keep up the good work!

AFM - Got out again for early morning dog walk, did not get out yesterday for bike ride, it was pretty cool in the morning, then we got sidetracked with other things. Had a few folks over last night (last minute plans) and spent most the afternoon getting that together.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Lynn my training partner coined a new term for my distance workouts instead of doing fartlek I do several Flee repeats. When we encounter dogs. Sally has a Pom and it's a very arogant beast, it wants you to think It's doing you a favor by eating the food you put out.

Anyway the walk went well and we braved the bitter cold of 34 degrees. I dressed for it though so it wasn't to bad. When I finally warmed up, about 5 miles into it I was quite comfortable.

Dave:hippie:

Dave: I am a weirdo and love running when it’s snowing. Of course, rain, not so much. Glad you were able to get out today. As far as the best goody bag, that would have to be Disney. Only because the rest of my runs have been little dinky local things. I’m hoping that my ultra has a really nice goody bag, since it’s a brewery to brewery run.:drinking1

Lynn: Oh funny. Howling hungry puppies, huh? Love it! Mine has his food out all the time, so we don’t have to worry about that. Apparently, it’s strange to have a dog that doesn’t overeat when food is always in his bowl, but he doesn’t.

Vicky: Wow, 4 laptops! What were those silly thieves thinking? We had someone steal our CC #, and they got their first order through, but then, they returned it and that’s how we found out about it. Still haven’t heard from the investigator on that one. I think I’m only doing 12 miles this weekend, because I try to up the miles for 2 weeks, then drop down for 1. I figured if it worked for Goofy, it’ll work for an ultra. Great job on your run. Your time is plenty fast. I swear your gym workouts sound like torture! Yikes!
I’m fine with the round medal and will take whatever chain or ribbon works for everyone.

Sue: My dog does that too. He is used to walking between 4:30 and 5:30 in the am. But, he only comes if my alarm goes off. Then, he will shadow me until we’re out the door. On the days that I can’t do it, he is very determined to get me to go. ;) The play sounds lovely. And good job spelling that properly!

Rick: I like doing intervals on the TM too. It’s just so much easier to hit the speed you want to go or the incline you want to go instead of having to really think about it. As for my speed, it’s kind of not fair because I have super long legs. It’s just a natural thing and I can't really take any credit. ;)

Regina: Do you live in a really remote place? I think it’s insane that they won’t ship to you. Since my hubby is a mailman, I know that the PO would have to, but if they use UPS or FedEx, they don’t. That stinks. How many miles do you have this coming weekend?
No, Frank doesn't run. He doesn't walk. He doesn't do anything physical unless he is being chased! :lmao: Harrison has mental blocks when it comes to running. The buildup is so hard for him. But, if it's a distance he knows he can do, he's hyped up about it.

AFM: I'm super excited today to make something with the new Kitchenaid mixer we order. It arrived yesterday and it's so beautiful! I didn't realize it was going to be so stinkin huge though. Frank ordered the big dog, not the little one. I am going to attempt bread for dinner and will probably make a cake or something.

I have 6 miles planned for today. I'm waiting for it to warm up a little first. Then, zumba tonight! I love going so much.

I got a 95% on my test, but still only have an 89.96% for the class! ugh!!!! I have one more test, so I'll get there.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Hi team! We have snow!! :scared1: But I don't think it's sticking to the ground. It's been going for a couple of hours now. I hope it clears up by rush hour or it's going to be a difficult commute home!

Tandy - Congrats on your test! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you'll be able to bump your average up! Regardless, I think 89.96% is awesome!

The KitchenAid mixers are huge!! I didn't realize myself. Whenever I see a cooking show, people always have them tucked underneath their cabinets and they look so cute. When I got mine, I was surprised (1) by it's weight and (2) that it *just* fit underneath the cabinets. I have the 5QT - it's the one with the bowl that lowers and lifts. I love it   Which colour did you get? I want to get an ice cream attachment for mine!

I've been following a similar pattern to your training as well. Two weeks of high mileage followed by a cutback and then back up again. This weekend will be an 18 miler, followed by a 12 miler and then the 20 miler! I'm tempted to swap the 18 and 20 mile runs around just to get the 20 miler over and done with but I think the 3 mile jump from last week will be too much.

Good luck on your 6 miler today :)

Dave - I'm arriving Wednesday morning. I like the flee repeats! I have yet to encounter an angry dog *knock on wood* There are a lot of dogs in our neighbourhood but most of them are leashed. I have one neighbour who was three dogs and they all walk without leashes. His youngest is a Westie and he runs along the sidewalk or driveways barking at passerbys but never runs out into the streets. I think he must be well trained. What's the name of Sally's dog?

The best thing I've gotten from a race so far was a jacket from the Midsummer Night's Run in 2010. One of the 5Ks I do earlier in the summer doesn't have a big goody bag but they give runners organic fruit and juice after the race. The bigger races I've done give away the standard shirts but there are usually sample giveaways and such at their expos.

Lynn - Hopefully the snow won't stick. Good job getting out for your walk early this morning! I have to start getting into the habit. When do you leave for DL?

Regina - That sucks that you can't things shipped to you. One alternative might be to have it shipped to a friend or family member and then have them forward it to you. That way if it's a company like FedEx who won't deliver to a remote area, you might be able to get it from the post office. I like Lynn's idea of ordering through the phone because they might have to enter the address manually. My fingers are crossed for at least 3 more weeks of snow and rain free weekends! This weekend is my 18 miler and next week will be a cutback to 12 miles. Gotta love it when 12 seems like a short run! I'm thinking since the run will *only* take me 2:30 hours, I can go for a haircut, get a pedi, go shopping  Hope DH can get a good pair of shoes!

AFM - It was raining last night so I cleared the junk off the TM and ran 3 miles. I was also working on a mango buttercream recipe last night but for some reason the butter curdled and I ended up throwing it out. I wasn't sure how to fix it :confused3

Tonight's a rest day so I'm going to see if I can catch 'The Muppets' after work. I think I'm the last person to have seen it :)

Does everyone want a keychain or a ribbon? Let me know who wants what and I'll ask the company if they can do a mixed order.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Vicky: I think you might be able to swap out the runs, but only if you feel strong. You could always play it by ear and plan for 18 with a 2 mile extension, if you feel up to it. :confused3 It is funny when you catch yourself saying things like "I have a short run this weekend, it's only 10 or 12". I remember training for my first half thinking I'd never make it to 10, now I do 6-8 on my non long run days.
Frank had to have the 600 series with the 6 quart bowl that lifts. I truly do not know why, but he got a great deal, so that must be it. It is caviar, which is a glorified pearl black. I love all the colors, so would have been happy with anything. What color is yours? I want the ice cream attachment too. I asked for it for Christmas. After some reconfiguring, I found a spot on the counter for it. The sad thing is that I have a pull out shelf for my mixer, but this thing won't fit on it! I made a batch of bread in it today and am waiting for it to finish rising so I can bake it. I have never had bread turn out, so I hope it does.
I will really take either the chain or ribbon, doesn't matter at all. Harrison won't care either.

AFM: The 6 miler went really well. It was all rolling hills, and I was still able to stay at an 8:22 pace. At one point, at the bottom of the biggest hill, I looked at my watch (really shouldn't have) and I was at a 5:45 pace. I thought I was going to wipe out. How do people actually run that fast? I'm on my way to pick up Harrison and then, he and I get to run his mid-week 1.5 miler. This will be at a much slower pace. :) My baby is not built for speed. He's a very solid, stocky child with short legs. Built like his father. :lmao:

Dave: I think the best goodies I have gotten from a race was the North Shore Turkey Trot. We got a nice fleece jacket and a post-race hot breakfast with pancakes, sausage, french toast, and bananas. The other race was the Hot Chocolate 15K where I got a running jacket, and a hat as goodies, and good chocolate fondue and hot chocolate after the race.

Of course, January will be my first Disney race so I expect to be impressed with their goodie bag! ;)

Hello all! Just a quick post to say hi. I hope everyone is doing well. Everything is fine here. DH and I had a good thanksgiving. We had a couple friends over and I successfully made my first turkey! We're going to see the Nutcracker ballet this weekend which I am very excited for.

I'll try to be back soon and catch up on all the posts.

Have a good night!

Rick you will be very disappointed in the Disney Goody Bag. The tech shirts and medals are nice but you have to buy anything else you want.

Well then I suppose by bank account will be taking a "hit". :rotfl2: I am sure my wife will be trying to pull me away from all the stuff at the Expo.

Yikes, I was going to attempt to catch up this morning but wow you have all been chatty.:thumbsup2

Can I be the first to say.......Disney next month!!!!!!!!

Tandy: WTG on your 16M that is a awesome time and on the test wow 95 that is awesome. I am going back in 2013 for at least the marathon not sure if I will do Goofy again or not. Will gage how I feel leading up to the full being sold out which I expect to be early since it is a anniversary year.

Lynn: You are a machine, it is great all the exercise you are getting into your days. How is your knee holding up? Another marathon in your future;)

Mike:

Vicky: WTG on your 17, you are well on your way. I haven't seen the Muppets yet and might wait as I have some free passes so might wait till it is not so new and I can use them

Rick: Looking forward to the photos and "break a leg". I also find intervals easier on the TM not quite sure why but I agree

Dave: I know we already talked about plans for January but so everyone else knows. We are also arriving Wed same flight as Vicky. Actually she will get there first since she is in the row ahead of us:lmao:

Emily: Hi!!!!!

Sue: Hi!!!!!

AFM: I think we are doing our 8 miler tonight, my work Christmas party is tomorrow night and we are all staying overnight so won't be home till late morning Saturday. Housework, Christmas decorations and some baking will pretty much take up the rest of the weekend so to make sure it don't get conveniently missed we will go out tonight....I hope if the weather doesn't co-operate then I will throw in Twilight and hit the TH....gotta get it done. Only a few more long walks till race day.

Have a good one all

The definition of Marathon: A whole bunch of people chasing a couple of Kenyans.

Kim are you and Mike going walk your races in January or are you planning a run/walk routine?

Tomorrow morning will be 800m Flee repeats with a 400m whimper in between each freak out. There now that is the workout of future champions. Getting busy getting stronger and faster. Grrrrrrrrr!! I was going to do this workout previously referred to as interval training this morning but decided to take a rest day and do it tomorrow.

It's DECEMBER!!!

Dave:hippie:

I survived my first experience of 'runner vs vehicle' this morning! Kinda scary when I think about it now. Also really pisses me off.

The sun is out. It's 21 degrees and a bit windy. I am feeling comfy, happy and looking forward to being outside for some 'me time'.

I was almost at the first mile of a 3.5 mile run, when I approached an intersection on Miller Rd, a road near my home that I run frequently (on the sidewalk) because it has a solid 3-mile incline I like to train on.

So as I come up to the corner, there is this blue SUV coming to a stop on the side street. Now there are several cars coming up Miller so he neede to wait to make his right turn. I slow down, looking at both him and the traffic, and determine that he isn't moving forward and doesn't have an opening in the traffic to merge.

Wrong!! As I run in front of him in the crosswalk, he starts to pull out!!! He hits me on my left hip as I spun around to put my hands on the hood of the car and start running backwards! There was no where else to go! I think this lasted for like 2 seconds before he hit the brakes, but it felt like forever. I was literally on Miller Rd by the time he stopped. I could see one car passing behind me on the road as others stopped.

I ran around to the drivers side and the guy rolled down his window, apologizing and asking if I was okay. At the moment, I was just happy to be standing there. He was shaken up because clearly he was NOT PAYING ATTENTION and trying to bolt into traffic when it was not safe to do so!

I was more incredulous than mad at the time. Well, I was unharmed really so I just told him I was fine. He asked me like three times if I was okay. I said yes, and decided to just continue on my run. The hip felt ok yet a tad sore, but it wasn't affecting my run or my form so I just kept moving.

That guy will have a story to tell at his office today I guess.

Looking back on it, I should have run behind the car, but there was another car behind the SUV and I thought I didn't want to run between two vehicles. This is the first time I 'read' the conditions incorrectly.

Finished the 3.5 miles at a 10:00 pace and without any further excitement. I just hope the hip feels fine for my 11- Mile LR on Saturday.
