Hakuna Matada - Awaiting an Awesome April!

Lynn: Thanks. It was delicious.

Emily: I'm so sorry to hear about your loss and the other difficulties in the area. Lots of good thoughts and wishes for you and your close ones.

Beth: Thanks. I'm hoping they fix it asap. I hope your trip is going well.

Vicky: Yeah, that's the exact reason I've held off calling anyone. I'm sure my LL is doing his best but it's awkward cause the only people who suffer is me and DBF (who doesn't really worry about anything). :confused3

Grats on going Goofy this year! I can't wait to follow along on that journey. Just let me know which recipes you want.

Regina: Thanks. I've never been a great cook but I can follow a mean recipe! :rotfl: I'm actually debating on doing both of them versus one or the other. I know I can do a half marathon, but doing the distance twice back-to-back makes me nervous. I just really want the 15th anniversary Donald medal (my dad's name is Donald so I want to win it for him) and the Chip n Dale medal. I was hoping DBF would be my relay partner but he doesn't seem too interested. I don't know if I can find someone else to race with me if he decides he doesn't want to do it. Grats on going Goofy as well! Maybe someday I'll catch up to you and Vicky and do a Goofy as well.

I ran the time-off by my on-leave supervisor when she stopped by for a visit. She'll be back in charge when the time off takes place and she knows the work load cycle of my work well, so I wanted her thoughts on the reality of it working. She seemed to think it was a much better timing than the Princess, and since classes don't start till the 9th here, I wouldn't be missing much in the way of work.

My FB stalker has left me a long, thankfully, and when you block someone on FB, it removes their posts from your view so I can't even see her offensive comments. :thumbsup2

Emily: I'm in the same boat. I want to decide before the price change but I really am struggling in what to choose. Does the relay course mirror the marathon course exactly, then? I would probably want to run through DHS and AK (if those are options) since I already got to run through MK and Epcot via the Princess. And if I did both the half and the relay, I'd have already run the MK and Epcot parks the day before. How do you think you'll end up choosing?

About the Tink: I can appreciate the thoughts expressed by the male community on this race and although I suspect a women's race from the marketing at the Princess, it should have been more clear to those who didn't attend so there was less of a let down. I look at it more as an attempt to offer a Princess-like race on the other coast for people who can't get to WDW. I'm only doing the DL 1/2 because I want the coast-2-coast. I don't expect I will ever run the Tink because my heart just isn't in DL. :confused3

I also would point out that I'd like to be able to choose a women's cut shirt at the non-women's-focused races. While I think the men (and women who agree with them) have valid points, I don't think the shirt comment is one. I pay as much as a man in the DL 1/2 and yet I have to get a shirt that won't fit that I'll end up having to give away too. It's a two-way street that one and everyone who is complaining because of it (not the other reasons, just the shirt), should have done so at ALL the other races where women aren't given the choice. (Note: I ask for choice because I know many women, like Beth, who prefer not to have a women's cut shirt, which is fine. I think it shouldn't be forced either way). Only now that they're on the short end of the stick is it an issue. Odd.

AFM: I looked up the results for the 10K I am considering doing at the end of May. They aren't available from last year but there's a website spot blocked out for where they will be posted so I think they will be available online. I just need to get more running in. I'm only managing once a week right now, but I'm increasing my speed without issue.

I'm having troubles with my knee again, the other one from before but same pain, so I think I need to go back to icing and rolling more frequently, regardless of how much I run.

DBF ran for as long as he could recently, just to see, and it ended up being about an hour doing his intervals. He's really excited. It can only get better from there. He was horribly sweaty though. He didn't enjoy that much. :rotfl:

We've been getting snow on and off the past week (as recently as my walk to work this morning... :sad1:). I am tired of Mother Nature's mood swings at this point.

TGIT! Happy Easter/Long Weekend to everyone! I hope it's restful.

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - I like to think chores, especially cleaning, count! Yes we are packed and ready to go - will head out on Tuesday.

Saylan - I agree with you that Disney was looking for a Princess experience at DL with the Tink race. I thought most of the Disney races did give women a woman’s cut shirt - the tech shirts, not the races you only get a T-shirt for. I have quite a few women’s race tech shirts from Disney races, and I do not think I bought them all at merchandising.

Emily - Good to hear ankle is better!

Regina - Scott may be posting pictures on FB (I am computer challenged). We are really looking forward to the trip!

Mike - Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I don’t think your weather will improve soon - we woke up to about an inch of snow on the ground - not on the roads - but on the grass! You WILL survive your races! Not many thoughts here on Tinkerbell Half, other than the 5K is extremely expensive for a 5K! We cannot do the longer races any more because of our knees (arthritis and Doc’s orders), so we are just looking at the 5K’s now (on top of our bike rides).

Gerry - Have fun at the new job! What are you going to be doing? We have another friend who works for DCL in Orlando.

AFM - Got out yesterday fairly early with the dogs, then did some Pilates exercises and some weights. We went to see “Cats” last night, I really enjoyed it and probably would have enjoyed it more if I had known the premise of the story and had read T S Elliot before going. We signed up for another bike ride, this one is called the Starlight Spectacular in Colorado Springs, it is a midnight ride. We have a friend down there who talked us into signing up and who will put us up for the weekend. It will be a shorter (22 mile) fun ride - mostly families - so it will not be a speed/endurance ride. Should be fun. Today - starting with snow on the ground, the satellite receiver is covered with snow and not working, I decided I could live without TV until it warmed up enough for the snow to melt! But I did miss the weather report, so I do not know what is in store for today. At this point, it looks like more rain.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Well it looks as though as of this coming monday I'll be single again. If that does come about there will be a lot more Disney in my future and training and racing in general.

Anyone want to share a Value resort room for the Everest or that night half marathon that is the fall?

Sally and I walked an hour in the mall since the weather outside was chilly, windy and cloudy.

Dave:hippie:

Hello Team!

Dave~ What do you mean by single? Please explain! I'll be down for Everest on Friday May 6th, leaving on Monday the 9th. I'll be at All Star Sports if you care to join me. Be very aware that I keep odd hours because I work nights and am a bathroom hog. I think the race is sold out, did you sign up? It would be fun to have a roomie!

Lynn~ Thanks for the weather report! Today was okay, partly sunny with temp around 50. I actually ran in shorts and only two shirts. More rain is in for tomorrow. In case I forget, Have a GREAT time on your trip!

Saylan~ It will be good to meet you next January for the WDW race weekend!

Regina~ I agree with what you said about the Tinkerbell race. Glad that you and Kyle are running together! I missed it, where are you located now? I'm dieting as I have gained weight, and I am craving Tonga toast!

AFM~ I got out and ran four miles today with a pace of 9:20. The sun was warm, and the wind was cold! Such is life! - Mike :cool2:

Same as before Mike, she still can't find a job and knows it's a strain for me and that I've had to give up my racing and traveling. She also misses the city life and being able to visit her sister on the weekends.

I didn't realize Everest was next month, i wouldn't be able to swing that. I thought it was in Sept. I guess I'll just have to look at the Oct Food and Wine.

Maybe we can split the cost of a room in the future if your going to a race solo.

Dave:hippie:

Saylan - I don't know how I'm going to choose... I'm so indecisive. I've never ran a race at WDW, so by doing the half I'll get to run through MK. But Epcot is my favorite park and looking at the marathon map, if the relay follows that course, I'll get to run through more of Epcot. So, I'd probably run the second leg if DH and I did the relay. I thought about doing both, but that also makes me nervous. I'm not sure I could 2 halves back-to-back and I can't talk DH into both so if I was serious about it I'd have to find someone else to run with and I don't know if I can. I need to get DH to focus and help me make a decision :)

Emily

Dave did you get my text yesterday? So sorry to hear this:grouphug:

Good Morning Team!

Dave - Very sorry to hear that you are having issues at home! Pixie Dust for you!

Emily - Good luck with your decision!

Mike - Thanks, we will have a great time! Yesterday we had some thunder showers, today is VERY windy again (predicting gusts up to 60mph) but sunny, but cooler, highs in the 40’s for the next few days. Just upped the wind forecast to 70 mph gusts!

Kim - Hi!

AFM - I got out for dog walk but again windy, so only did a short loop. Today is even more windy - so I will just have to bite the bullet and get er done! Got a bit of a bike ride in on the spin bike.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Thanks for the kindness and the Pixy dust guys. I should never have started a romance with someone so far away, darn internet anyway. It's hard to take someone completely out of the life they are used to and make it work. We are parting friends so that's better than it could be.

I would love to do the Wine and Dine half and visit with you guys. If anyone hears of room rates for $60 to $75 dollars at any of the value resorts during that time let me know.

Sally and I walked our hour together in the Mall this morning. She is leaving on Sunday to start over in Nashviulle. She has spent the last two days job hunting online. There is so many more jobs there than in this small town.

Dave:hippie:

Hi Team!

Emily- I’m glad your ankle/foot has been feeling better. Hopefully it stays that way so you don’t have to go to the Dr. Great job on making it out for a run Wednesday! Well, if you decide to do the half relay, there will be several of us on the team also out there on the course. I’m probably the slowest of the bunch so you’d probably see more of me than the others, but there will be lots of other WISH support so you won’t feel alone. Do you have a WISH shirt? Do you know of another couple that you could partner up with for the half so that couple could run one leg together and you and Patrick could run the other leg?

Emily/Saylan- Have you two thought/talked about partnering up together for the relay since you both seem to be interested and looking for a partner?

Saylan- I’m glad your on-leave supervisor thought you would be ok to take the time off. Has the icing and rolling been helping your knee? Tell DBF congrats on his longest run! That’s great!

Gerry- Congrats on the job with DCL! What will you be doing? I hope you enjoy it and don’t have to skip Nashville after all.

Lynn- I’ll keep an eye on Scott’s FB page to see if he posts pictures from your trip. I think the 5k is so expensive because they added a “twilight” park ticket to it. I found this really interesting because they did the exact same thing for the Wine and Dine last year to MNSSHP, and this year when I was browsing the information page, they have reverted back to just the 5k- I think based on feedback they received from runners after the race. A midnight ride sounds exciting. When is that ride? I sure hope your weather gets better soon- maybe it will be all nice and lovely after your return from your cruise? Good luck braving the wind today!

Dave- I’m sorry to hear things did not work out between you and Sally, but I’m glad you two are parting as friends. I’m glad you’ll be able to get back into your racing and traveling again.

Mike- We are now one state over in Oregon (on the coast). Speaking of tonga toast, since we will all be at WDW marathon weekend, save some time for us so we can get together for breakfast (lunch or dinner) and have some tonga toast (or something else if you prefer)! How is your dieting going? Way to go on your 4 mile run!

AFM, DH and I went out for a 3 mile run/walk yesterday. I’m still doing run/walk intervals to build up my running time. I had back tracked them from where I was after I took that break from running when we were moving and to see if it helped my shin. It was, of course, still windy. DH didn’t think it was as windy as Tuesday, but it still seemed pretty darn windy to me. Either way, we finished so it was a good run. I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter weekend!

Who's doing the wine and Dine night half marathon? Did anyone do it last year?

I'm looking at it, kinda simi serious, lot will depend on how fast I can put some pennies aside, how much the room will cost, can I get off work at that time.....

I sure need a Disney break, now especially. Realisticly I'm probably dreaming and Jan will be the soonest I can make it.

Dave:hippie:

I slept soundly for 4 and half hours last night then dosed for a couple more. I'm getting more comfortable with the idea of Sally moving to Nashville, we are holding off on getting the divorce for a while till we see how things work out. We might even do a trip together this year if she can get settled into a good job. She has been applying for Nashville jobs the last few days and there are certainly a lot more opportunities there.

No training today since I have to open the store early and it will be storming this evening. I am going to increase my training miles this coming week.

Have an awesome weekend guys.

We would love to do Wine and Dine this year, but won't be able to make it out since we are planning on going Goofy in 2012. Last year Mike, Eva, Mary and her DH, myself and DH all did Wine and Dine. Did I leave anyone else out? If so, I'm sorry! I enjoyed the night race and that it was happening during the Food and Wine festival. It should be a lot better this year since they've hopefully worked out the issues from last year.

I'm glad to hear you're doing ok Dave!

Hi team! Hope everyone is having a fantastic Easter weekend - eat lots of chocolate and then run and/or walk to burn it off! Just a reminder that the fees for the marathon weekend in January increases after April 24. So the fees are:

Full - $140
Half - $140
Goofy - $310
Relay - $280

Don't forget the discount codes for the full or Goofy if you're registering for one of those races. There's one for Disney Visa card holders and one for the full or Goofy races. Oh and if anyone is looking to run the relay, I believe there's another WISH'er who's looking for a partner.

Oh yeah... I registered for Goofy! Ahhhhhh!!!! Guess I'd better order a WISH shirt this year

I told my PT on Thursday that I was registering for the Goofy and he asked what that was. I said that you run a half marathon on Saturday and then a full on Sunday. His reaction was "Why would you want to do that?" He's not anti-running, just not a runner. But he promises to get me in shape for Goofy!

Dave - I'm sorry to hear that things didn't work out between you and Sally :( Did you think about moving to Nashville - I know you just bought the house so that's probably a bit tricky. Hope to see you in January! Have you thought about Goofy? :)

Mike - Great pace on your run! I hear ya on the weight gain! I put on a bit (understatement) when I stopped running after January. I stopped running but didn't change my eating habits  Mmm... Tonga Toast! Weren't you telling me something about eating two breakfast orders the last time you were at Kona?

I don't care for the Tinkerbelle race myself but I'm not really into the princess or fairy themes. I might have considered it if it was in May but as it is, it's too close to marathon weekend.

Lynn - The midnight ride sounds like a lot of fun! Let me know the name and the date, and I'll add you and Scott to the calendar. Safe travels and have an awesome time on your cruise!

Saylan - You'll be running the Goofy in no time at all! The WISH'er who's looking for a relay partner in January is Maura. She's really nice (I've met her before). She's on my FB and her username here is jmsgat. She just posted a RR on running Boston (in case I butchered her username). Hope your knee is feeling better! Use ice packs after your run even if it's not sore.

I've done a couple of local races where they will give different shirts to the men and women. I don't like wearing a men's shirt because it's not as fitted. Hopefully Disney will do that one of these days.

Gerry - Congrats on the new job with DCL! What will you be doing? I've always wanted to go on a Disney cruise! How was 'Rio'?

Regina - You're signing up for Goofy too?! Awesome!! I'd say if you wanted a bit of a challenge, go ahead and run into the wind but otherwise, I'd take the non windy route. I never thought about that for a partner. Yeah that would have been bad if I got stuck with someone who wanted to take over everything. I ran a 2 miler on Friday but really had to push my lazy butt out the door to get it done  Did your door knob get repaired yet? That was nice of your dad and his friend to bring up your car!

Emily - I'm glad your ankle is feeling better. Any thoughts on which race you're registering for?

AFM - Since there are so many of us who are going to be at WDW in January, I think we should do a breakfast or mini meet outside of the giant WISH meet. Maybe a breakfast at Kona? Just throwing it out there ...

As for me, it was raining heavily this morning so I didn't get to go out for a run before my massage. Boo! The massage therapist was funny. He was telling me how he's been hit or kicked by clients. At one point, I had my hand on his shoulder and said "I can almost punch you if you go too hard." But seriously, I wouldn't do that. I'm going for brunch tomorrow so I'm going to run in the morning. I'm going to try a recipe for key lime coconut cupcakes tonight. I'm not sure how they're going to turn out because coconut flour is a bit fussy.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

I made my decisions for the 2011 racing season. Out of town race will be the USAF Half Marathon with my race walker brothers. Then some local 5ks and the 10K classic. January will be a DisneyWorld race, dare I think Goofy #4, Grrrrrr!!

No Vicky moving to nashville is not an option for me. I hate big city living as bad as Sally loves it. I'm licenced to practice in Ky not Tenn. Yes just bought a house in Bowling Green Ky.

Dave:hippie:

Goofy will be Hakuna Matata STRONG in 2012!! I'm so excited for all of us!! I was talking to my running store lady and I had an epiphany about running the Goofy. I think it might actually be easier than running "just the full". You know all of those pre-race jitters the night before...the ones that cause you to stay up all night freaking out? Well...I don't think we will have them. I think after runing 13 miles that morning (and getting our bodies adjusted one day early to the crazy early race time) that we will get to bed early and sleep great! I don't know about everyone else, but getting my schedule down before a big race is key!! The half is like a buffer zone, and if we all train properly it won't be a strain on us to do back to backs, because we will have done them in training! I just can't WAIT!!!!

Dave - I am so sorry to hear about you and Sally. Things in life always happen for a reason...it was not meant to be I guess. Hugs your way. You are strong...you'll come out the GRRRR Panda you always do! Oh and I ran the Wine and Dine. I hated it...lol. Naw..I can't say that. It was a mess at the finish. We got stuck in the building trying to exit and had to stand there shoulder to shoulder for what seemed like forever. I got pretty sick and dizzy partially from overheating then not cooling down properly from being stuck there. There were people passing out, thowing up, etc. I got out found Jordan then headed over by where the Beatles play to stretch out and rest. Well..after that I had a hard time even walking. I got dizzy and sick. I know I am the only one of our group that had this issue and I thought it was just me overheating, but I read lots of other people had the same issue and attributed it to the immediate stop and herding at the end. I hope that this will be fixed this year. Other than that it was actually a nice course!

Vivky - Love the idea of Kona!! Monday Morning??

Scott and Lynn - Are you still on land?? Have a great trip if you read this...and LOTS OF PIC!! Say hi to Koda for me... KO-DA!

Regina - Hope you are settling in to your new place. I would LOVE to run some races out that way in the coming years. How are you finding the weather? I know you said it was windy, but I bet the temps are great!

So I am gearing up for my half in May. I was going to run the local 10 Miler yesterday, but the price was $50. Just didn't think it was worth it since that course is similar to what I'll be running in May. Kinda on the same roads and everything! I have a 14-15 miler next Sunday then my taper week. Although I've lived here for 15 years now I have never ran the Cleveland Marathon (other than the 10K) so this should be FUN!! Hope everyone is having a great Easter weekend!! We will be postng pics of Gage and his egg hunt later today on FB. I'm so excited for him I shot out of bed this morning (a little too early). :lovestruc

Yaaa Vicky!!!!

Mike and I are doing the relay so will be there to cheer everyone along. I am doing the first leg and Mike is doing the 2nd leg.

Kim

Hi team! Hoppy Easter!!

Thanks for the all the congrats on FB! This is soooo exciting!! I'm so looking forward to Goofy, especially since so many of us will be running/walking it! We should get a team discount on rooms LOL

Eva - I had heard about the stories at the W&D last year but didn't realize it was that bad. I hope they've figured out a way to disperse the crowds more quickly this year. If I had finished running a race and had to wait a while for foods and (especially) fluids, I'd probably be sick too. Can't wait to see the Easter Egg hunt photos! And good luck on the 14 miler :)

Dave - Whoops! I thought you were in TN for some reason. Don't mind me, I'm totally illiterate when it comes to geography. And you should go for Goofy #4

Kim - Awesome! You'll have to let us know where you'll be on course! Are you going right to the finish to wait for DH?

Saylan - If you haven't registered for the relay yet, you could just register for the Goofy. Just sayin... :upsidedow :rolleyes1 It's everyone's first Goofy so you'll be in good company!

AFM - I know it's early but we're all big Disney fans so I know everyone loves planning stuff .... even if it's waaaaay ahead of time. On FB, we were talking about the idea of a team dinner after the Goofy, full and relay races. What does everyone think about Chef Mickey's on Sunday night? I haven't been there in a couple of years but I think they have Goofy, Donald, Minnie and Mickey (of course).

For a Kona breakfast, I was thinking of maybe Thursday or Friday morning. Monday is usually the WISH meet at the Boardwalk and I'm not sure if anyone wanted to go there. We could also carb load in between races and go Saturday morning

Anyway, there's a ton of time to plan! But I just wanted to throw it out there :goodvibes

Hi Everyone!

Dave~ I did the Wine and Dine last year and liked it. Although, it was my first half marathon so I was pumped up. I haven't run one as fast, yet. The end of the race was chaotic as everyone was forced into a service building at Epcot at the end to pick up their gear bags. It was also pretty darn hot that night. Comparing it to Januarys marathon weekend is kind of tough. It's a much smaller scale with less of everything, including on course characters. I would do it again this year if we could afford it. The medal is huge, bigger than my Donald.

Vicky~ yeahhh for going Goofy! Now does anyone want to go Dumbo with me? Yes, last time I ate two Tonga toasts! I have a wicked sweet tooth, plus I rewarded myself for completing the Donald. Hmmm, fininsh the Goofy and maybe I'll eat three!

Regina~ my dieting is going okay. I've upped my training and lessened my intake of junk. The scale is going in the right direction so far.

AFM~ Its been a stressful week here with some family issues going on. Yesterday, I decided to blow off some steam and run a half marathon that I had seen advertised. I didn't get much sleep on Friday, so I ran out of steam pretty quickly during the race. I finished in 2:25:21 with of pace of 10:58. It was half marathon number four for the year! Called the Eggshell Shuffle 5K and Half, it was pretty low budget. It was advertised as chip timed, but it was a group start with no timing mats, only one at the end. They didn't even have a starting line, just a guy with and airhorn who told everyone where to line up. I like the medal though. It was my slowest half yet, but I did it right after working all night, so I can live with it. It never really ocourred to me to do the 5K instead! I think I'm losing it...

Anyway, how about a character dinner with Goofy on Sunday night, to celebrate our accomplishment on marathon weekend? I want a team photo with us and the Goof! Then maybe breakfast at Kona on Monday?

-Mike :cool2:

Oh almost forgot. Here's the recipe for German Chocolate Cake Cupcakes. Don't make these if you're on a diet ;)

I didn't bother cutting mine in half and frosting the middle and the tops. I just did the top. Oh and be careful when making the frosting. If your burner is on too high, you might end up cooking the yolks. Scrambled eggs in your frosting anyone? Don't ask ... :upsidedow

http://www.marthastewart.com/263061/german-chocolate-cupcakes

Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature, plus more for tins
  • 2 cups cake flour (not self-rising), sifted, plus more for tins
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/3 cups sugar
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 5 ounces semisweet chocolate, melted and cooled

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush standard muffin tins with butter; dust with cake flour, tapping out excess. Whisk together cake flour, baking soda, and salt.

With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, cream butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until each is incorporated, scraping down sides of bowl as needed. Beat in vanilla. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture in three batches, alternating with two additions of buttermilk, and beating until combined after each. Beat in chocolate until combined.

Divide batter evenly among prepared cups, filling each three-quarters full. Bake, rotating tins halfway through, until a cake tester inserted in centers comes out clean, 20 minutes. Transfer tins to wire racks to cool 10 minutes. Run a small offset spatula or knife around the edges to loosen; turn out cupcakes onto racks and let cool completely. Cupcakes can be stored up to 3 days at room temperature in airtight containers.

To finish, use a serrated knife (and a gentle sawing motion) to split cupcakes in half horizontally. Spread a heaping tablespoon of frosting on top of each bottom half; replace top halves. Spread more frosting on top of each cupcake. Serve immediately.

Coconut Pecan Frosting

http://www.marthastewart.com/263088/coconut-pecan-frosting

Ingredients
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
  • 1 1/4 cups packed light-brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 sticks (12 tablespoons) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces and brought to room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 2/3 cups (7 ounces) sweetened flaked coconut
  • 1 1/2 cups (6 ounces) pecans, toasted and coarsely chopped

Directions
Combine egg yolks, evaporated milk, and brown sugar in a saucepan. Add butter, and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thick, about 10 minutes. Pour through a fine sieve into a bowl.

Stir in vanilla, salt, coconut, and pecans. Let cool completely. Frosting can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 1 day; bring to room temperature before using.
