24 hrs later & I can't find a thread. Really? No one started one? Are we that wrapped up in ourselves?

I feel so bad for the people there.

:sad1:

Yes, there is another thread. I just bumped it up. Surprisingly, not too much response for such a devastating situation. I am rather surprised at this.

You can find threads with hundreds of pages of complaining, arguing and pointing fingers about anything under the sun (which, to be honest, I do read as there are some interesting points made), but this thread and the other one I saw about Haiti haven't even made it past one page each. :sad2:

Perhaps it is because there is nothing to 'argue/fight" about. :confused3
It is such a terrible thing to have happened. My thoughts are with those who are there and those going to offer aide.

I don't know about the argue/fight, but I think some of it may be because of the lack of information. With the communications being out, it's hard to do more than pray.

I have started hearing of some donation centers in our area. They mainly need money and are encouraging people with clothes, etc to have yard sales and donate the proceeds. (which actually would be pretty hard right now with the winter weather in most of the country).

I think as more info comes out and there are more things people can do, they'll be more activity.

We sponsor a child in Haiti and have no way to find out if she is ok. This tragedy has certainly been on my mind.

I just started a thread about the Text Drive. I'll repeat my post here in case this becomes an official thread. I can't believe there hasn't been much on here, either.

The American Red Cross allows anyone in the U.S. to text HAITI to 90999 as an easy way to donate $10 to the recovery effort. The money is billed to your mobile phone account. According to the latest tally, the Red Cross has already raised over $800,000 through text messages.

I just did this and once you send your text, you will receive a text back asking you to confirm your donation. Text back yes and your donation will be made.

Snopes link to confirm it is not a scam: http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/charity/haiti.asp

It is on the american red cross page as well.

THAT'S actually a facebook status that could make a difference (not that bra color doesn't. :) )

Praying she is ok. I heard about this on the news this morning and at that point they didn't have a whole lot of info. They did show some devastating pics though :sad1:

Not only do I feel so sad, but my kids' school has been raising money for 3 years to build a school in Haiti. They just opened a few months ago. No word on it yet.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've been following this any way possible all day - Twitter, Facebook, all over the web - news orgs from other countries..... Sorry, should have stopped here first and posted.

Have you seen this? They are asking people who are looking for someone to post here:

CNN has been doing well covering from Haiti. They've been able to have iReporters on via Skype who are using satelitte connections. Once their cell phone & laptop batteries go however, they'll be out of luck.

They showed a website, which unfortunately I didn't get the URL for, with up 68 pages so far of photos/posts of missing people that loved ones are looking for.

YouTube even has some videos from first hand accounts, but the posts are taken over by idiots. :guilty:

Don't be sorry. Of course the DIS isn't the first place you should come for news. I didn't mean that. I just meant, as someone else touched on, that we have all types of threads here about people & their problems - big & small, yet we didn't have a thread yet about the earthquake. At the time, I didn't see Dan's thread because it was buried a few pages I think.

I've been glued to CNN and the other news sites... my mom is in Haiti on a medical mission trip. Communication has been horrid. I think she's injured, but do not know for sure.

There's a donated private jet sitting in Miami, poised to fly into Haiti and get her group out tomorrow (please, please, please).

I'm told that several of the people in her group of 12 are injured, 2 of them "seriously". But no information on the nature of the injuries or which of the travelers are injured. We haven't been able to talk with any of the mission team directly.

Information is so hard to come by, the coverage on CNN and the social networking sites today was all we really have.

For now, all we can do is pray and wait for them to be on the US-owned plane for some reliable information.

As more informaiton and stories come out in the days to come, I imagine there will be a lot more for people to talk about.

Kathy, I'm very sorry about your Mom. I hope she's fine and that she and her group will be on that plane and home safe very soon.
