Hair salon tips

My DW is planning on having her hair done the afternoon of formal night, at the salon.

We already know about what an "up do" will cost, but is tipping also required.

We're trying to finalize our budget and need to know if a tip is expected/recommended.

A tip is not required, but is customary.

I tipped just as I do at home for any hair salon service.

If you are watching your budget - one thing I remember reading from prior posts - if your DW likes "things" in her hair - like decorative combs, etc - she may want to bring them from home. They are available on the ship, but very pricey.

My daughter went to the salon for an "updo" on formal night. We told her to be sure to remember to give a tip of 15% or maybe a bit more, depending on how she felt the stylist was. The stylist did a good job, so when she is given the slip to sign she adds in a 20% tip. The thing was, the stylist had already added in a 15% tip. (We had already asked and were told that tips were NOT automatically added to the bill.)

My daughter did not realize this until she got back to the stateroom. It really made me mad, not necessarily about the money itself but I felt like someone had more or less taken advantage of her because she is a teenager. I am sure that the stylist had a good idea that a 35% tip was a bit much, considering that the service itself was expensive AND she had talked her into an exorbitantly priced hair clip. Next time mom will go with her. My daughter is pretty smart and not naive, but none of us expected to have to be so careful to watch out for being ripped off by someone in the salon.

Yes, just like massages you should tip them. 20 percent is what i give.
