If you're a regular client of one hairdresser but decide you aren't happy with him/her, is it rude to switch to another hairdresser in the same salon? I have gotten my hair cut by "Judy" three times now, but the last two times she has seemed really distracted and rushed, even taking a long cell phone call during my last appointment, and the haircuts haven't turned out too well (I know she has some upheaval going on in her life so I have been giving her the benefit of the doubt). There are three other regular hairdressers at this salon and one of them is highly recommended my several of my friends, so I'd like to try her, but I feel bad doing that since I know Judy will likely be right there when I am getting my hair cut by Alice. This is a pretty small town and this salon is one of only a couple so I don't have much selection!

Any thoughts?

I'm not sure how you should go about it, but I'd change.

its mean, you either got to stay with Judy or go to a different place

If you want to do it without any confrontation. (For lack of a better word). Next time you make an appointment, see if you can make it at a time when Judy is booked up or unavailable. Because that's "the only time you can go." Then do it a second time and after that, there should be no problem continuing to go to the new hair dresser.

Maybe check to see if they poss work any diff hours. Go while your reg is gone to lunch, early, day-off, etc. If you like the other lady better, just bite the bullet and go.
I have had to do this in a larger shop. I just talk, smile, and act like nothing is unusual about going to the other person. If she asks, politely tell her you wanted to try something diff, and mean no offense to her. Good Luck!

Is there a day Judy has off that Alice doesn't? You could always just say that it was your only available day so you had to have someone else do it. :flower:

If you want to switch hairdressers, then by all means, do it! If you're worried about hard feelings, see if there's a day where Alice is working and Judy is not. If Judy finds out, just say that you had to get in that day and Alice was available. You shouldn't have to feel bad. It's *your* hair, after all. I was a hairdresser for many years, and it wasn't uncommon for people to "jump" from stylist to stylist until they found one they were comfortable with, even within the same salon. It's just the way it goes sometimes.

I think you should do it if you're not happy with her. I have done it once, but it was easy to switch because my previous hairdresser was always booked up and kept me waiting 45 minutes when I was able to get in. I just told her I couldn't get an appt. with her, and that was the truth. When I left my next hairdresser I had to leave the salon. I didn't have the nerve to change stylists within the same salon.

Yikes, I don't think I could do that. I would just feel too awkward and uncomfortable the entire time. Although I do agree with others, maybe you could go at a time when she's not there??

I've done it. My regular hairdresser quit when she had her baby, and I tried out another stylist at the same salon. I just didn't like how she did my hair. My hair isn't difficult to cut - it's long and all one length. I do have bangs though, and each time she would cut them too short (think grade school bowl cut short). She was also a little rough and pulled the hair a lot. So after the 3rd time I decided that was it, and when I called to make the next appointment I just asked for someone else. It was easy enough to do in my case though, because my mother usually gets her hair cut at the same time and at the same place, so when I made her appointment I just said that I'd like to try someone else this time.

The stylist I ended up with is good. Her hair is very similar to mine in that it's long and all the same length. The other one had short hair that was kinda spikey and for some reason made me think she should be on a sitcom as the cheap next-door neighbour.

Thanks guys. I think what I will do is start driving to a salon I know of in our neighboring city for the next few haircuts and then after a while maybe I will switch to Alice. I know I'm not being unreasonable by "firing" Judy but I don't want to make her feel bad.

:)

I go to everyone in the salon until I find the one I am comfortable with. To be honest sometimes I do not remember their name.

However my last cut was done very well and I think I will go back to her.

Don't give it a second thought.

I wouldn't be able to switch hair stylists within the same salon. I just couldn't do it.

I'd switch salons too.

I always find it so strange to go into a salon and see these beauticians with their wierd hair (color, cut, etc). Sure doesn't inspire any confidence in me! I want someone who has normal looking hair cutting mine, as I am not at all adventurous and just like it long and wavy (which it is naturally)!

Why is it we are all so afraid of our hairdressers???? (Don't misunderstand, I was afraid to switch too!) I mean, I would have no problem going to a different doc if I thought mine was incompetent...why do our hairdressers strike such fear in us? :confused3 :teeth:

No, it's not rude. You are paying good money to receive a satisfying service. If you are not happy, how can Judy blame you for going to find someone else?? I know most stylists would be happy if you'd stayed in their salon vs. going to another salon...but if it's uncomfortable, do what ya gotta do. I have worked as a stylist in a salon for about 17 years and have seen my share of clients hopping around. Some of mine have gone to others, and other stylists' clients have become mine. I (personally) don't feel offended...day 1 of Cosmetology School---You can't please everyone all the time! (Has always stuck with me). If I can't do your hair to your satisfaction, by all means, go to someone else....I (personally) just want you to be happy with the way your hair looks. But I will say one thing, there is nothing worse than "dumping" your stylist without talking to her...even if it's a lie. Some have told me I'm too busy...they can't get appointments when they want, others have outright told me they weren't happy....and that's okay. I'm more okay with being told something than the client just dropping off the face of the earth. Sounds like Judy was starting to take you for granted and any stylist knows, you can never take your clients for granted. I wouldn't go out of my way to schedule appointments when Judy isn't there, make it for YOUR convenience. It's your money, go to who you want. ...And if Judy is a "big" enough person, she won't have any hard feelings toward you!! Just my professional $.02....sorry so long! :duck:

my FIL owns a hair salon and they would PREFER that you find someone else in the salon than pick another salon!

also - one time I went to a salon and didn't go back and they sent me a post card a few months later saying

"We know that not every stylist is for you- please come back and try someone else!!"

I wouldn't worry about it. If you are concerned, talk to your original hairdresser and tell her you are thinking about trying one of the other hair dressers.
Most won't take it personally.

I wouldn't think twice about switching, You are paying for a service, you should leave satisfied. Did you say she took phone calls during your appointment? Very unprofessional.
