Hair Dryers Never Last!

Just a couple of months ago, I bought a $50 hair dryer from the store which I thought would last me a long time(The ones I am used to buying cost around $20). Today, the motor was barely working. Is it bad luck, or am I doing something wrong? Maybe we just use it too much! There are three of us in the house who use it daily.

I am just sick of having to spend all this money every few months on a hair dryer. I need to buy one that will last forever.............any suggestions?

I should really keep my receipts and call the company when this happens. Lesson learned.

I always buy my hair dryers through my hairdresser and her supplier. I have a lot of thick hair and I need good heat and air flow and I need it to last! They cost me more than $100 (can't recall exactly as the last one was more than 2 years ago) but if they can stand up to her usage daily they can stand up tp mine!!! Best investment I have ever made for myself and my daughters as well.

The one I have now is made by 'Dannyco'

I have had the same experience.

I think the ones on the store shelves, like Walmart, are just disposable.

I didn't pay $100.00 for one, but I went to one of the professional beauty supply stores, and paid about $60.00 for one that is more of a professional model. You could easily tell, because it definitely weighs more that than the cheap lightweight ones.

It is still going strong!

Our house had a very close call with a lightening strike, which did blow out a few little things like our Garage Door opener (how come they are always the first to go!!!) and the hairdryer. It was just the 'switch' for grounding (you know the reset button on the plug-box) I put a new cord on it... Still good to go, even after that!!!

I beg to differ. I have had the same hairdryer for...well, actually I'm not sure how long...but suffice it to say the shocking pink and lime green motif of the gutsy little monster was 'in' when it was purchased for me back in my middle scool days. I'd have to say I've had it at least 18 years. Its small, not much larger than your average travel sized, but is more powerful than many full sized hairdryers I've used. Mind you, I'm not an everyday hair drier...just for special occasions, but still, it's been one heck of an appliance.

For the most part, I have good luck with them.

Or well, my mom did.

The one I bought about 7 years ago quit after only 2 or 3 years.

I went to using the one my mom had (who died 9 years ago). She used it for several years and I'm still using it. Almost every day. I also have one that she bought years ago for travelling. It still works, too.

I believe that manufacturers don't make things to last very long so you have to go out any buy a new one.

I don't want to believe this, but I think about it often. I've had the same hairdryer (which probably cost about $30) for 8 years. My Samsung cellphone (free with my contract) is on year 5. My friends have to replace their cell phones at least once a year. I don't want these things to ever break, because I'm afraid once I get them replaced I'll have to keep getting them replaced every year.

I have learned that as long as you can clean out the "lint trap" they last longer- so you need a hing at the end of the blower.

I buy the cheapest highest wattage one with that feature. Mine has been going strong for 3 years already.

So at $15 for at least 3 years. to make it worth a fancy $100 you would replace the cheap one at least 6 times or 18 years before you would spend the over $100. jmho. Unless it comes with a hairdresser I'm not paying big bucks for a blowdryer and I have THICK hair and blow it daily(had to word that properly for fear of a tag:rotfl2:)

It's sad that I know this, but the key to making a hairdryer last for years is to make sure that the intake port remains clear. These often get partially blocked by dust and hair and hairspray. When this happens, the airflow is decreased and the motor overheats and dies.

I've always kept mine clean of lint, but they always seem to die (in a fury of sparks!). I finally bought a professional one about 2 1/2 years ago for about $150. Its the best I've ever owned.

I could have written the same thing. I was just thinking this morning that I should ask my hair dresser friends which models they recommend. I have thick hair and it usually takes me at least 20 minutes to dry it in the mornings.

I faught with Conair over my last one that lasted just shy of 3 months. Of course when I was about to send it back, I plugged it in and it worked again. Then a few more weeks later it stopped again. I'm just sick of wasting my money on crappy dryers.

I agree - I keep buying $50 dryers, and can only get a year out of them. However, I have an ancient, cheap dryer from about 15 years ago, that works fine (but isn't powerful enough - it's a travel).

I think the best way for long hairdryer life is to keep the it lint free. Every few months or so I use a toothpick to clean out the lint. I can't remember the last time a bought a new dryer.

Thanks for the tips! I will try and clean out the lint part and see if the motor will perk up a bit.

I would love to own a salon quality dryer. Don't you have to be a hairstylist to actually go into those stores like Sally?

No, not into Sally's. :)

I'm a hairdresser and I have been very disappointed with my last few hairdryers. Last time I went in to a beauty supply store for a new one I asked the lady about it. I'd bought a dryer that lasted 1 1/2 years. I asked, "What's up with that?" She told me that I'd gotten 1 more year than I should have out of that dryer!:headache:

She said they are making them lighter weight because that's what we want and using lots of plastic parts instead of metal. Plus they have all these new features to them (ionic and all that) and those just cause problems.

First dryer I ever bought for the shop cost me 80.00+ dollars 26 yrs. ago. It lasted 8 years!! Last one (same brand) was 100+ and last 1 year. I've bought 2 more dryers since that one failed. Ugh.

That said, I do want light weight. :lovestruc
