Whats the best for tangled long hair? Im tired of the pain of combing out snarled hair after i wash it. I need a conditioner that softens and detangles so combing is a breeze.
Thanks

Hi!

Have you tried the leave-in Johnson and Johnson 'No More Tears' detangling spray. It is for kids (who have a well known low tolerance for brushing out their hair!!:))?

Cathy

The problem with detanglers, at least what I've heard in the past, is that it can dry the hair out after you use it. So it's more harmful than helpful in the long run. The more moisture in the hair, the easier it is to brush. I know as a kid, my mom could use a whole bottle of that stuff in under a week with just the two of us.

And kids hair is usually much much finer than an adult. When it comes to thin and straight.

My problem is that if it actually works and gets all the tangles out, then it ends up leaving my hair greasy feeling after I blow dry it, even after rinsing and rinsing and rinsing.

I have yet to find one that leaves my hair clean AND tangle-free.

Not conditioner but I use Aquage Sea Extender Silkening Oil. I got it at my salon. It's $$$ but I only need 2 pumps each day. It makes my hair very soft, very shiny and no tangles. It also helps you dry your hair faster. I use it on my 8 yo dd too. She has waist length hair.

First, if you are using a low quality shampoo, or one that is not correct for your hair, this could be what is making the problem so bad.

Second, are you using conditioner at all?

I have thick course hair, and have been using the Redken All Soft.
I have been really happy with it!

(however, the last bottle of shampoo I bought does not seem to be as good... did I get a bad batch??? Have they changed the formula or gone 'cheaper'???)

I have also used the Biolage detangling solution.
This is used as a third step, after conditioning.

I do think that, as one poster mentioned, products like these can begin to backfire, because, maybe if you get to much of a layer of silicone on your hair, then use a hair-dryer, this can seem like dry or brittle.

I have thick, course, hair.... and yes, many conditioners can be that way.
But, their are good products out there.

PS: Nexxus leaves my hair like I just gave it a lube-job!!!
It doesn't really smooth the hair shaft or moisturize/soften.
Just leaves a coating of gunk.

I am currently using an expensive salon brand called Bed Head (orange bottle) and it tangles my hair so much. So much for buying the expensive stuff:confused3.

1) I brush my hair before I get in the shower, starting at the end and workign my way up.
2) I shampoo, and do not pile my hair on my head. I sqeeze shamppo in my hands, aplly to my scalp/top of head and massage. I rarely apply shampoo to the ends, and just let the runoff take care of the ends of my hair.
3) I apply Herbal Essance Conditioner (whatever strikes my fancy at the store at the time of purchase -- I have used this stuff for years and hate to change) to the ends of my hair, going no higher than halfway up my head. I do not apply any conditioner to the scalp.
4) I let the conditioner sit for a full minute or more while I wash my body or shave my legs.
5) I rinse out the conditioner.
6) I squeeze the excess water out of my hair and then do the same using a towel.
7) I wrap my hair up turban style and get out of the shower. Haor remains wrapped while I wash my face and apply moisturizer. Dry body with towel while walking to sink.
8) Aplly deodorant and body splash, get dressed (for me this means back into my PJs -- I can't stand to put on clothes that I plan on wearing -- weird I know)
9) Take hair out of towel and part it with my hands (usually it will fall into it's natural part). I make sure everything falls down.
10) Using a wide brush (it's a plastic vented brush) I start AT THE ENDS and comb/brush my hair out. Lately, I've been lettign it air dry, but on Sundays, befoe church, I will dry it wth the blow dryer in sections. As always, when styling or brushing it, I always start at the ends.

Starting at the ends is always good too, and brushing before washing it.

Another thing, is don't be so wash happy... it's good for the natural oils to work down to the bottom of your hair. And the longer the hair, the longer it takes. Of course, you don't always want to wait that long. But a few days in between. I also find that the natural oils work better as a detangler, rather than leaving my hair dried out from too much washing.
Shampoo will also not "mend" damaged hair. So if the ends are frazzled with split ends, just cut it off. I was horrified when I chopped 5" off the bottom, but it helped a lot, and no one else noticed the difference in length.

Since my hair does absolutely nothing... I never bother blow drying it. I ring it out with a towel. Brush it, and try to get any excess water out. Then either braid it or pull it back with a tie.

This stuff is amazing!

I have always had long hair, and mine is thick and course.

You've gotten lots of good advice here, but my absolute go to trick is to comb out my hair as I'm rinsing out the conditioner. I like to use a pick, but a wide tooth comb will work too. I do this with my DD8's long hair. She's tender headed and combing it out would take over an hour sometimes. . .ugh! Now I go in and comb it out while she's still in the shower like I do mine and it has helped sooooo much. :thumbsup2

I do what the poster above mentioned-- I just keep a wide toothed comb in the shower and comb out my hair as I am rinsing out the conditioner. The comb I have is a few years old and made by conair. The end of it is shaped like a hook and easily hangs off the organizer that I have over the shower head. So much easier. One of my daughters also has thick, fairly long, curly hair as well and I have taught her to do the same thing.

I use various conditioners for curly hair--aussie, herbal essence--purple bottle, pantene has one. As long as the conditioner is fairly thick it seems to work well.

Good luck.

There is one terrible orange one in their line, it's called self absorbed. I accidentally bought it once and it's really AWFUL. The dumb blonde one is really really really good. So are moisture maniac and control freak. Costco used to carry them here and they were only around $2-4 more than the grocery store brands and I unfortunately got hooked :headache:

Anything with behentrimonium methosulfate.
