Hair braiding?

We had our 2 year old DD's hair braided on the Dream by the pool on the first night. Can't recall the name of the CM, she was not the lady pictured but was from Jamaica. We told her that we wanted the headband style braids and she put in 5 very nicely and quickly.

I told her that DD had a tender head and was a little grouchy. She still did a great job, charged me only $2/ braid. She told me that she had a 3 year old daughter in Jamaica that she would be seeing in two months. Great experience, braids were super-cute, and they lasted a month. We'd do it again in a flash.

What are headband style braids?

When we were on the Wonder last month it was $3.00 a braid, (corn row/headband)and extra for long hair( can't remember the amount as we were not charged)

We were in Castaway Cay a week ago today :( and I got my DD's (7) hair braided. I checked prices in Grand Cayman, and it was more expensive there than on the ship, so we waited. I have found that no matter where you go, even on CC, if you say you want "X" amount of braids, they always do more than you ask for and it always costs more than you think.

We got DD's hair done in St. Maarten three years ago, and although the lady was lovely and gentle, it cost more than I thought. I showed her a $20 before she started and that's all she got in the end. I was not as smart this time on CC and it is hard when it all goes on the KTTW card. We asked for 6 cornrows ($2 each) across the top and when she was done, there were 8. She was not very gentle and my DD said it hurt. She still has them in today and they look good, but it is very frustrating that they don't listen and in Disney's way, they always get you on the "upsale".

We have had our girls' hair braided on CC several times now. The CC ladies are local ladies from a nearby Bahamian island. The first couple of times, they only wanted the single braids, so they each got a few and they were only a couple of dollars per braid.

The last time that we sailed on the Dream in September, the girls decided that they wanted to go with the cornrows, so we looked at a picture and told the ladies what they wanted. I asked the ladies how much it would be, and while they couldn't tell me exactly how many braids each girl would get, she did give me an estimate of about 20 per girl. And, sure enough, one ended up with 20 and one with 21. The cornrows were $2/each.

I've never had the upsell on CC the past several times that we have sailed. Now, I always have DH with me and I'm not sure if they are intimidated by him, or what, because he is always asking questions, etc. But, they've never tried any sneaky tactics with us.

Here's a pic of the last time that we sailed in September.

I just have a question about hair braiding and what your experience is when you take the braids out? I had my whole head braided about 10 years ago in Belize (about 200 braids-- I have a lot of hair!). I remember when taking them out, a lot of my hair fell out with it...(not enough that I had bald spots or my hair was ruined or anything- but just a lot of hair came out). I loved my braids though because for someone with thick, curly, frizzy in the heat hair- it was so low maintenance!! Especially when being in the ocean and having wet hair all the time (my hair does not look nice when drying naturally)!

I am considering doing it again next year. Only now, I pay to have my hair straightened with Keratin and my hair is a lot smoother now. I am just worried that the braids may hurt my hair (breaking hair off or becoming curly/frizzy again). I am going to talk to my hairdresser but just wondering what your experiences are with the aftermath of the braids:rotfl:

A friend told me that the same thing happened to her when she took her braids out. She said that we all shed hair naturally over time but because her hair was in braids, it all came out at once, when she took her braids out. I think I would have flipped!

Sorry to be so long in responding! I've had trouble since the disboards upgrade.

My DD ended up with 23 braids at $2.00 each for the headband style when we got it done at CC. It was more braids than she's gotten before and more than we really wanted but we had no choice. It looked nice and she kept them in for two weeks and they still looked good.

I just chalked it up to another cruise expense and she did enjoy having them.

Hope that helps!

Had the head band done on the FANTASY on 4/15 for DD. Came to $20 plus tip. DD has a lot of hair. They set up on the shaded side of the pool deck and move to the other side after noon (to stay in the shade). You had to sign up for a time. Very little wiggle room for walk ins. It looked nice but DD got sick of it by 4/20 and we started to take it our after Castaway Cay. Not a lot of hair came out and no hair damage.

Make sure you put sun screen on the exposed scalp to avoid sun burn. They advised not to use conditioner.

Looked nice for pictures but DD says she would not do it again.

I had DD wear a bandana on her head to keep the sun off. It worked well if you got it wet first. Also recommend wearing a dry bandana to bed - keeps the braids in better shape.

Do they take appointments for the hair braiding onboard the Fantasy? If so, when/where do you make appointments?

Does anyone know if they do this on the Magic? We are sailing NYC to Canada so I know it's not the 'tropical' theme!

My daughter has had her hair wrapped on other vacations and would love a wrap again. She has never wanted the braids, though.

Thanks!

This is one thing I will be taking extra $$$ for. Never been on a cruise at all, but my dd 8 is bi-racial and has very thick, white girl curly hair. We are definitely doing this. I'm planning on taking $150 just for the braiding, at least it will keep me from doing hair for a bit! LOL :rotfl:

Hi, we are also going on the 5 night cruise to Canada, and I am wondering the same thing. :) I may try and call DCL to see if they know anything.

I hope they do braid for you going to Canada! But, to let you know, we sailed to Alaska last summer and there was no hair braiding :confused3

on the ship they don't start the braiding until you are underway.
We wound up doing braiding right outside the nassau port on our way back to ship, I wasn't gonna do it at all but my husband thought it would be cute so we did, it has been in a week and needs to come out probably. We just got 2 braids cause DD has a very tender head! IT was one of those totally spontaneous things, not sure we would repeat

My DD is also bi-racial. She was so hestiant to do it while on board because she LOATHES me (or anyone) combing her hair. She finally got it done on CC, the lady, Ms. Victoria, was super great with her. My daughter's hair was a hot mess (i gave up fixing it everyday and it had been probably 3 days since I had combed it). She asked me if I had a comb on me, and of course...with DD's having hair like ours we ALWAYS have combs (especially at the beach). I gave her my own comb and told her to go to town. She came out with I think 15 braids and it cost about $30, but I gave her a nice tip...all on the KTTW card! I seriously wish we did it sooner, DD LOVED it and it kept her hair "fixed" and out of her face. She kept them in for almost 2 weeks...all her friends/teachers at school LOVED it too!
