My DD (11) had her hair braided on our May 7 Western cruise. Had it done on the ship for sanitary reasons. They told us she could safely leave it in for two weeks. We took it down after one week and two days and the amount of hair that fell out was scary! Handfulls! Thank God she has very thick hair or we would be trying on wigs. Her hair is now noticeably thinner in that area. I should say noticable to me, but maybe not to others. She had her hair braided last year in Nassau on the Blue Lagoon Beach excursion and took it down after about three days because it was so uncomfortable. This time she had no discomfort so we were not aware of the damage it was doing. I'm sure this doesn't happen to everyone, just wanted to let others know about our experience.

:goodvibes My daughter & DGD princess:Niece princess: all had thier hair braided (half way back-headband style) on 4/9/05 on the Magic. They left their braids in 10 -14 days. We soaked the hair with conditioner & snipped the bands. The beads & braids came out easily & little hair loss. We normally lose 100 hairs a day. So a 1,000 isn't abnormal after 10 days. It would look scary :confused3 I'm glad your daughter has thick hair. We will do braids again for the ease of care. :wave2:

My dd left hers in for almost a month, and we had the same experience. However, in talking to my hairdresser about it, I don't think it really damaged her hair or caused it to fall out. Rather, the hair that she would have shed normally over the course of those four weeks stayed in while she had the braids, but then when we took them out, it all came out at once.

Of more concern is hair breakage -- split ends, etc. I didn't see any evidence of that.

Dumb newbie questions:

Where on the boat do they do this?
How much does the half head type cost?
Does it hurt their little heads when it is being done?

TIA
Chris

I do not have any daughters, but if I did, I would not let them get their hair braided. I sat at the pool last week & watched a mom sit 2 of her daughters in the chair to have their hair braided, & both cried the entire time. One appears to be about 6 or 7, and the other about 12 or 13. My heart was breaking for them the whole time. I wanted so bad to run over there I snatch them out of that chair & sent them off to get ice cream & play in the pools. The mother stood there & talked to them & wiped away tears. I could not do that to my child. Maybe the daughters really wanted to have this done, but I thought it was awful. Thank God I have boys!

:sad2:

I always have DD's hair braided at CC and on our last cruise, on the ship, for, as mentioned, sanitary reasons.

We left it in about a month the first time we had it done, and I had taken her to get a hair cut. The girls in the salon were taking the braiding out and were having a fit when they got all the bands out, one of them brought me a handful of her hair. They said NEVER leave it in longer than 2-3 weeks. I told them no one had ever told me that.

This time I made her take it out after 2 weeks and there was some hair loss, but not as much. Like another poster said, she too has enought hair to compensate the loss!!!!

So we'll see if she wants to have it done next cruise.

My dd now 6 LOVES having it done, and yes, cries enough...I want to say enough, and leave with half a head done, whatever!!!!!!!! She persists, saying she wants it.....

She does have incredibly thick hair, but loss is loss. Try putting lots of conditioner throughout the hair prior to undoing and removing the braids..This really does help a lot, and conditions the hair prior to removal....

:)

I had my 3 and 4 yo DDs hair braided on our cruise in April. I made the appointment with the thought that if they cried I would stop and end the appointment. With my children distraction is the best medicine so I brought lollipops with me for them while they braided their hair. It worked magic. They never said a word. Unfortunately the bands kept breaking. I ended up getting a full refund after they had to redo the braids 3 times. The manager said they must have gotten a bad case of bands and ended up throwing the whole case away.

I would have it done again. It looked soooo cute and it made taking care of their hair so much easier.

Hi Everyone
If the person who is braiding your child/rens hair is not a professional
than yes it's a possibility your childs hair can become damanged.
My sister has been braiding hair for over 20 years and has never had a client who has ever complained about there hair falling out. She has braided all types of hair.

I love braids and I have kept them in my hair for months ...yes months :) and my hair did nothing but grow. When I took my hair down there was a lot of my hair that came out but it was normal shedding. My daughter loves braids and she does cry sometimes ....but my dd cries when I blow dry her hair or even put a nice barrett in it :) It's funny cause when she cries about her hair being braided I'll ask her does she want her auntie to stop and she'll scream "NO, I want my hair braided" :) She loves her braids and does not like when it's time to take them out. The results are beautiful and I think your child would love them once there in. I know mines does.

For anyone who would like to get there children hair braided on the cruise. Go right ahead....don't be afraid :) just make sure the person does not braid the childs edges "BABY HAIR" and make sure the braids are not tight. Also bring some oil/grease or hair lotion to put inbetween each braid and massage there hair for about 3 minutes. i personally would not recommend washing there hair everyday unless there going swimming. If you wash there hair, blow dry it and put a little conditioner or oil and they will be fine. :)

I would also suggest getting your childs hair braided a day or two before the cruise. Tha'ts what I'm planning on doing :)

Have a great day :cool1:

I too had my DDs hair braided, but on Nassau. Both times we have had no problem with her braids. We do watch to get a person who is pretty sanitary with clean combs. You can also bring your own if you like. She never cried. Infact, she was practically dragging us off the ship to get it done the second time. She is 5 so we do not do the whole head. The first time we did about 12 to 16 braids on each side and the last time we did the crown. She looked so cute! We kept them in for about 3 weeks after we came home.

The braids are $2 a row. Pretty reasonable for the headband style. Our girls didn't cry but did wince & make faces. They loved thier cool hair dos & wanted to keep them in when they got back to school. Lots of little girls did cry & it broke your heart to see them. But, they loved it later. Even little women to be will suffer for a great look.

My daughter has had her hair braided many times (twice in Jamaica and once on the Disney Cruise) and has never experienced the hair loss or the pain. After it was done she said, "ya, it hurt a little, but not much". She has very fine hair, but I never saw hair loss. I am not sure what the problem was with the other girls. I am not sure if it helps that I use conditioner every time I wash her hair, and used lots during the month that she had her braids.

I had my hair braided on my honeymoon in Cancun. I LOVED IT. I have curly hair so it always takes a long time to get fixed in the morning. With those braids I just rolled out of bed and was ready to go. And there was not ugly crazy looking hair while I was swimming or when I got out of the pool. I absolutley loved it and have been planning on getting it done on my upcoming Disney Cruise for months now. I just want to wait till after Formal night. I don't think cornrows would go nicely with a ball gown.

Don't forget to use sunscreen on the scalp after getting the braids. A sunburned scalp is very painful.

My DD is looking forward to geting braids while on the ship, but we only get a few braids on each side of her part not the cornrows.
