This was DS first real pet, one he could hold and cuddle, train and bond with....a strange choice to many, it was a Dumbo Rat....very cute, smart and sweet. DS is taking it hard as the rat had a tumor that was growing too fast to do much for, DS is so sad that he couldn't help her. It is hard...his homework assignment for writing was an all about me page, and in the section for "Best Friend"... he had written "Pepe'" that was her name. Sigh.....to top things off DD's rat is lonely beyond belief...she just keeps serching the cage for Pepe, we will be aquiring 2 new babies at the end of the month, but that is so far away to a 10 year old boy.
Thanks for letting me talk about it.....and I know, rats do not appeal to 99% of people, but my DS loved his best friend.:( :sad1:

{{hugs}} I'm sorry for the loss of your son's fur baby.

aww so sorry! my best friend (hes 19 almost) had a pet rat who he loved,,and this is from a big macho guy that doesnt show feelings...templeton died this week and my friend was soo upset!

Templeton is a great name for a pet rat ~ he's from Charlotte's Web and his voice was Paul Lynd. Oh the memories ~ I love that movie!

I know exactly how your son feels ~ we put our 12 year old golden retriever down in June and I still think of him everyday. However, the thoughts are accompanied with smiles now instead of tears and I hope your son can remember how much fun he had with his rat. Soon the tears will turn to smiles for him also. Give him a hug for me :(

Thanks all, he is tossing and turning in bed.....we have a dog too, but that came about when DD had her tonsils out and DS just lucked into the deal on that pet. Luckily the breeder has agreed to post photos of the new babies as they grow to help DS along until they are old enough for us to bring home. I agree Templeton is a very Rat -appropriate name! The only thing that is helping DS is the fact that he knew 3 years would be around the time the rats could end their time with us, so he was somewhat prepared as she was 2.5...sorry for the losses you guys have felt w/ your 4-legged family members. I am glad we did not go away for the holiday weekend as many of our friends did...that would have been awful to not have had the chance for DS to say good-bye. I know that means the world to him.

:grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: to you and your DS. Have fun with the new rat.

I don't know if there is a concern with that particular breed of rat or not, but please look into whether or not it is advisable to cage the babies apart from your adult rat for a while.

And  to all of you.

 I hope your son feels better soon. It's very hard to watch your child have emotional pain, because you can't put a band-aid on it and make it feel better.

Regardless what his pet was, he loved it, and I hope he feels better soon.

Let your son know, Pam, that all pets, not just dogs and cats, will be at that bridge. Pepe is there, waiting. Maybe this will be a comfort. My best......

called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet
goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and
play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and
comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those
who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember
them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss
someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and
looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs
carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you
cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses
rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once
more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never
absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
Thanks so much Dan....Mitch is slowly dealinng with his loss. It is helpful that the breeder has 2 new "babies" waiting for us as soon as they can leave the mother. I will print this out for him...I have been sporadic on the boards and did not see this right away....thanks for the link also..:D

I cried for days when I lost my pet rat Babs. She was the sweetest little critter ever. I understand. I'm so sorry for your loss. Dumbo Rats are cute too. I wanted to get one, but not so sure about getting another small animal now that Monty is here.

Sending sympathy and hugs to your son. I am sorry for his loss. It doesn't matter what kind of pet or what size, when you lose a loved one it hurts.

Like the saying - time heals all wounds and so does a new pet.

My DS (8) cried so hard when his hermit crab died, and his 4 goldfish, then another hermit crab so we did get a dog - life expectancy is much longer. Hope your son feels better soon. It's tough on a kid to lose a pet.

Pam,

I am so sorry for your son's loss! Pets are a big part of our lives and it can be devastating when we lose one.

There is a great website that helps with pet loss. Here is the link to their website! www.in-memory-of-pets.com or you could also go to www.petloss.com, too. Personally I like the first one better. It was the the Humane society recommended to us. I often go and light a candle for all of the pets I have lost over the years. I think it could really help him! It will give him a peaceful place to go and visit with Pepe!

Best wishes for the new fur babies!

Jodi

I had two pet rats growing up so I understand. Their names were Mischief and Marshmallow. Maybe they're playing with Pepe now.

I'm so sorry your son had to lose his pet. It is never easy no matter what kind of pet it is.
