Hacienda or San Angel Inn

My vote is for La Hacienda! We were there last Thursday and it was delcious. We've eaten at San Angel Inn before and we liked it there, but the food at La Hacienda was different, not just your entree with rice and beans.

To start, we had cocktails in the late afternoon at La Cava del Tequila. Our plan was to have the margarita flight, but it wasn't available that day because they were training a bartender. We were bummed! DH has the San Angel margarita which was delicious and traditional. It came in a small martini glass with a small ice bucket containing a drink shaker that was filled to the brim. It was the endless margarita! I think he filled his glass at least four times! I ordered the Avocado margarita--after seeing the reviews I just has to try one. Unfortunately, I just didn't love it. It was too sweet and tasted like unripe avocado/banana. The reason I like margaritas is because they are tart and because I like the taste of tequila. This just didn't have any of this. After a few sips, I gave up and ordered the Jalepeno Margarita. This was much better for me--there were bits of muddled jalepeno and chunks of cucumber--very unexpected, but very tasty. It had a clean cucumber taste with a little bite. {As an aside...my favorite margarita of all was on the resorts menu, it was the Habanero Lime margarita. The perfect margarita, which I will be working to perfect at home. Just a bit spicy and very tart. Yummy!} While we were at La Cava, another couple had the tequila flight...we were very intrigued...

...so we started our meal at La Hacienda with the tequila flight. It was fun to taste the different tequilas and accompaniments. My favorite was the middle tequila with the Sangrita, which was not sweet, and tasted of citrus. (From Wikipedia: The key to a balanced sangrita recipe can be found in the fruit salad's recipes, which would have included any or all of the following: tangerine, cucumber, papaya, mango and jicama.)

We were on the DxDP, so we started with 4 appetizers. DD12 started with the Sopa de Frijol which she declared to be the "best. soup. ever." She loves soup and orders soup wherever we go. A small bowl with tortilla strips and queso was brought out and then the soup was poured into the bowl. DD15 has the queso fundido. This was very rich and delicious. The cheese came out with chorizo sprinkled on top of it. The waiter zipped by and stirred it up and said that if he didn't stir it up, it would have become a brick of cheese. We had tortillas to sweep up the cheese. I ordered guacamole, which was delicious. It was spiced right, not too bland, but not overpowered by other flavors. The chips were light and freshly made. We also dipped the chips in the queso. DH ordered the Chiles toreados y chorizitos (had to cut and paste that from allears.net). This was tasty. The chiles were a little spicy, they were roasted and salted nicely. The chorizitos were essentially mini sausages, also very tasty.

For our dinners, DD12 and I had the Pescado de la Talla, which was Tilapia. This was perfectly cooked, moist and flaky white fish. We both enjoyed this. The mango chutney was a great complement to the fish. It was nice to have a light entree after the appetizers. DD15 had the Pollo el Pastor. This was not terribly exciting, but she liked it. I would also say that this was on the lighter side. DH had Puerco en Salsa de Mole Negro. This was beautifully presented and DH liked it. The pork looked to be cooked just right.

Our desserts were yummy, too! DH and I shared the Empanada--that was absolutely the best! I highly recommend it (as have others on these boards). DD12 had the churros and ice cream as did DD15, as we were celebrating their birthdays. Both ate everything. DD15 had also ordered the Tamal de Dulce, which was unusual and very sweet. Because she had the churros and ice cream, she pretty much ate that. My recommendation: get the Empanada.

While I liked San Angel, with the ride going through and the volcano, I thought the decor at La Hacienda was really beautiful. It would definitely be a great place to watch the fireworks.

Good luck! Hope you have a great meal, wherever you end up!

PS: our entire meal took about an hour and forty minutes. We started at 7pm and got out in time to fit in one last ride on Soarin' before the park closed.

We ate at La Hacienda in July and really enjoyed it. And I agree with PP---avocado margarita is to die for!!!!!

Wife and I are big Hacienda fans and big margarita fans, but I have to say that the avacado margarita falls into the "glad I tried it once but never again" category.

We enjoyed our meal at La Hacienda. Food was delicious, service was excellent. Highlight of the evening was watching Illuminations from our table while having dessert.

I like San Angel but I love La Hacienda! San Angel's atmosphere is great and so pretty, but the food at La Hacienda is great! If you are lucky and go during Illuminations you can have a nice view depending on the table you get.

To clarify, can you see views of Illuminations from both? Do they also both have patios and do you need to request that or can you see the show from the windows? Thanks!

Either choice is great! They both taste delicious! I have eaten at both over the summer, and I think they are both really great places to eat, and inside it is very beautiful. I believe whatever choice you pick, is great! :thumbsup2

No, you can only see Illuminations from La Hacienda. San Angel Inn is inside the pavilion which is why it's always nighttime. It's part of what makes the ambiance so great, but it means you can't see anything outside :goodvibes

As far as La Hacienda, I've never been, so I'm not sure if all tables have similar views or not.:confused3
