I just made an appointment for my daughter (5) to get the mist on Thursday. All they have available is the mist, no shots. When I asked about my younger daughter (10 months), the girl who answered the phone said that they don't vaccinate until they're 2 because they have the antibodies from when they were born - huh?!

Anyway, I assume a 9 month old has to get the shot, so I guess we'll have to wait on that one. I plan to get older DD the mist on Thursday. She had the seasonal Flumist a couple of weeks ago with no side effects, so I'm hoping this is the same.[/QUOTE]

You have to wait 28 days between FluMist doses. If it won't have been that long since her seasonal FluMist by Thursday, she can't get the H1N1 FluMist yet.

Bolding mine.

This is worth repeating. Please make sure your DD's doctor knows when she had the seasonal flu mist.

I purposely insisted DDs get the seasonal shot last weekend to make sure they could get the H1N1 mist if that is all we could find.

Ugh! Why can't the doctors office tell me these things?! So she has to wait 28 days from the "regular" FluMist before she gets the H1N1 FluMist? It will be more like 24 days...guess I could wait until next week, but it would be nice to not have to make 2 trips there!

Thanks for the info! DISers are more informed than the ped office - pretty sad!

OK, I just called the pediatrician, and they said there's no waiting period between FluMist vacc's and that you can have them together. So what's the deal?! :confused3

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/vis/downloads/vis-laiv-h1n1.pdf

This is the info sheet from the CDC - widely distributed BTW - which indicates that the seasonal FluMist and H1N1 Flu Mist (live viruses) should NOT be given together. (See bottom of section 5)

It does not list a waiting period, indicate that you should tell your dbut they should definitely not be given at the same time.

NO you cannot have them together!! (I'm yelling at your ped, not you! :goodvibes)

The interval doesn't matter if there are two shots, or one mist and one shot, but two mists CANNOT be given closer than 28 days.

This was stressed to us in the training I attended on vaccine administration from the State Department of Public Health.

http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/mmwr_rr.html

there is a waiting period between live virus vaccines, recommendation is wait 4wks between seasonal and H1N1 vaccine.

There should be a separation between
the seasonal flu mist vaccine and H1N1 flu mist vaccine of at least 4
weeks because of concerns about competition between the two vaccine
viruses.

a 4-week waiting period is required between the administration of the Seasonal FluMist vaccine and the intranasal mist form of the H1N1 vaccine, all school-based programs planning to offer the H1N1 mist should suspend their Seasonal FluMist programs until after the H1N1 mist is administered.

No interval of separation is required between the injectable forms of the seasonal and H1N1 vaccines, or between the Seasonal FluMist and the injectable H1N1 vaccine.

Bill Wiseman, spokesman for the Harford County Health Department explained in an e-mail to The Dagger that “there is a 4 week interval required between any intranasal mist influenza immunizations in order to ensure the greatest protection (or, in other words, in order to avoid compromising the level of protection afforded by the vaccine).”

I am shocked and saddened at the lack of information that PROVIDERS out there have. No wonder the general public is so confused. :sad2:

HLAuburn, plase call your ped back and tell them to do some research! I'm serious. If they're vaccinating their patients with two mists closer than 28 days, it's likely the second one (which ever one that one is) is not going to be effective. :sad2:

... On a side note, I'm about ready to start looking for a "black market" source for the H1N1 vaccine - in the "shot form".. Anyone wanna send me 3 of them?? :headache:
:rotfl:

We are having trouble finding either vaccine.

I don't know if I am remembering this correctly, but is your wife pregnant? Do you live near Franklin, TN? If I am remembering what you have previously posted correctly, she can go get it at the Health Department on W. Main. They have it and are giving it to pregnant women, children 4 and under, and school aged kids with risk factors. If you go with her, they will give it to you as well (this is based on my friends' experience--she took her two high risk kids in and they gave it to her as well since she lives with them). If I have you confused with someone else, sorry!

I just took my 3 kids for their flu shots- regular flu shots. While there I asked about H1N1 vaccines. They will not be getting or giving them. They said if I wanted the kids to have it I would have to call the local health sept etc. My two older kids will have the option of getting them at their school, but I don't know what to do about my little guy. I kind of feel like they should get it, but then to have my pediatricians say no way is disconcerting. Oh what to do.....

My dds just got their h1n1 at the doctors office. It is a large peds office so they were one of first ones to get it. They were giving it to anyone who came in the door and wanted it. Even if you weren't a patient. Still waiting on the regular flu shot for dd7 she can't have the mist.

Thanks again for all the info everyone posted. I called the CDC hotline today and they confirmed that you should wait 28 days between mists. I called my ped office AGAIN and was forwarded to a machine where I left a message for the nurse. I've yet to hear back.

DD is scheduled to get the mist tomorrow and that will be 4 days short of the 28 day "waiting period". My younger DD needs to go in too, but I've had this appt for awhile now, and I'm worried if I ask to change their appts, we'll end up waiting several more weeks. I just don't think 4 days is going to make a difference...

Hopefully the nurse will call back soon, although they don't seem too informed over there! :headache:

Adults- Will you be getting the shot? Im not sure Im going to. Shots (any shot) make me so sick. Im not sure its worth it. Im a child care provider so I can get the shot Saturday.

-------------------------

Adult here - 60 yrs. old with health problems; DD, 37 with health problems, & DGD, 11.. We will ALL be getting the SHOT - when and if it ever becomes available..

I have gotten sick in the past after receiving the regular seasonal flu shot - just a reaction, NOT the "flu" - as I'm very sensitive to even the most ordinary medications.. However, either flu would be life-threatening for me AND, I hate being sick, I hate wasting money being sick, and I hate wasting my time being sick.. So - I'll take 24 to 48 hours of "sick" from the shot (IF that happens) as opposed to being really, really sick if I don't get it..

Of course everyone has to make their own decision..:goodvibes

Thank you so much! My DS's got the regular flu mist 10/10, so they can't get any sort of mist until 28 days after that?? But they CAN get the H1N1 shot???

They have an appt. for the follow up regular flu mist 11/4, because they have NEVER received any flu shot/mist before.

So after 11/5, they can't get the H1N1 shot/mist until 28 days after that???

One more question...........since they got the regular flu mist the first time around, they have to get the regular flu mist the second time around, right? They can't switch from the mist to the shot for their "booster"?

thanks, and I hate to ask the DIS, but like so many others, I'm getting misinformed at my ped's office. Was told 10/10 when they got their first flu mist they didn't need a booster, then as I was reading the papers they give out on vaccinations, there it was in bold letters "if they are under 9 and have never had a flu shot before they need a booster in 28 days". :sad2:

Four days will probably not make a difference. :goodvibes

We were told that 21 days was the "bare minimum" and it's BETTER to wait the full 28 days, but doing it a few days early was not such a big deal as doing it a whole week or more early.

And I hope I didn't come across as preachy towards you. I was literally screaming at my computer when I read that your ped was unaware of the need for the 4 weeks separation between doses of FluMist. I don't understand why those GIVING this vaccine aren't aware of the guidelines. :sad2: They can do just as you did, and call the CDC directly. (I don't expect your ped to take my word for it - lol.)

Okay - if this is their first time EVER to get a flu vaccine, then yes, they need two doses. NO, the two doses don't have to be the same form.

There is no waiting period between shots of seasonal and H1N1, and no waiting period if you get one shot and one mist. It is only the two mists that require the 28 day separation, AND ALSO if your child needs two doses of either vaccine, those two doses (mist or shot) must be separated by 28 days.

So....(gosh this sounds confusing, even to me) your kids can get H1N1 SHOT anytime. They would need to wait until Nov 7th to get H1N1 MIST. They also need a booster (either shot or mist) for the seasonal flu on Nov 7th, and they will need a booster for H1N1 28 days after they get that vaccine.

ETA - Nov 4th is close enough :)

No, I didn't see it as "preachy" at all! I appreciate the info! I'm a little frustrated by the whole lack of info and misinformation going around. And apparently a lot of it is perpetuated by medical providers - at least mine!

I think we'll go ahead and get her H1N1 tomorrow.

Thanks again!

I had just about decided to go ahead and get the H1N1 vaccine for the kids; as long as it was the inactivated version (shot) and I could verify that it was one of the limited supply of single dose vials (thimerosal free)

But I found out today that the girl who sits next to DD in class had a confirmed case of H1N1, so chances are DD has already been exposed, and now I'm rethinking. I'm always cautious about vaccinations.

FWIW, DD's friend was pretty miserable for a few days, but no serious complications and she was back in class today (after missing Thursday - Tuesday, so 4 days of school)

Our pediatricians office said H1N1 vaccine won't be available until sometime in November if they even get it. I'm leaning toward getting it for them...

Laurie31-- yesterday my dds got their h1n1- I just pulled the cards out of my purse that they gave me the cards have different exp dates. Is this the date that the vaccine expires or the date when they will need another flu shot because the immunity will where off. My dd7 has asthma and her date is 2011. Dd9 has no health problems and her is 2010. I don't want to bug the doctors office they are slammed. I have to take dd7 in next week for her seasonal flu shot, (they only had the mist) and I can ask then if you don't know. Thanks for your help

Erin
