I was just wondering DD is starting to get serious about gymnastics does anyone out there have a child that does this sport on the competitive level and how expensive is it really? She is only on level 3 for now?

Thanks
Jeanine

My DD has been in gymnastics for several years. She is in level six. The cost for for the gym is not too bad but the meets start to add up. We went to the ny state meet in Buffalo. It cost about $1000 (with airfare, hotel and meet fee). Local meets are between $50 - $80. Also there are leotards and warm up suits. But DD loves it.:cool1: so we live with it. It also takes up alot of time.

Gymnastics is a wonderful sport for girls, but it can be very hard on the pocket! We live on the east coast and when dd was competing they had meets several weekends a month from early December through April and we traveled as far west at Arizona for a meet. Our gym (at the time) would calculate all the fees and you paid those monthly so you weren't coming up with a lump sum for a meet. And I have more leo's in our house than most stores (and dd had to quit because of a back injury). What ever you decide, just make sure she's having FUN! Spending 20+hours a week in the gym in addition to full time student (my daughter was in high school, so her work load was pretty intense), didn't leave time for anything else.

My DD3 does gymnastics, mostly for something fun to do to keep her active and out of my hair. :-) I struck up a conversation with another mom last week, whose daughter is 10 and is on the competitive team (not sure what level.) She said that during the school year the girls worked out 10 hours per week, and in the summer it is 15 hours per week.

I can tell you that we pay approximately $16.50 per hour for our 3-year old's class. ($165 for 10 classes.) Assuming costs for the older girls' classes are charged at the same rate, that would be $660/month! And that doesn't include meet fees.

Certainly different gyms will charge differently, and I really have no idea if our gym is cheap or expensive because it's the only one we've been to. But I felt like you were looking for some hard numbers - thought I would share what I know. Good luck!
