The famed celebrity chef is in a wheelchair due to a fall from stairs during a TV shoot. His quad muscle on the right leg was damaged. Emergency surgery was required. He will be in a wheelchair for at least 8 weeks, putting a huge damper on his thanksgiving plans.

Prayers and pixie dust for his speedy recovery.

16 years ago, I had a fall the completely severed my quad muscle on my right leg in Mid October. Internally done when my kneecap pushed up and separating it from the tendon. I required surgery but never got a wheelchair. I'm jealous! All I had was a leg length Velcro leg brace and 27 staples holding it all together. I was unable to do much for about 8 weeks, but I had a walker (no bones were broken) crutches and was moving pretty slowly for a few months after, however, I was walking fairly well by the beginning of December.

I read that he tore the length of the muscle itself, that it basically "exploded." Apparently when a quad muscle "goes" it's at the tendon, separating it from the muscle. This was the actual muscle. They are saying 8 weeks non-weight bearing, then the long haul of PT to regain function.

So essentially the work he would have to do could not be strenuous. Expect his TV special to be delayed at some point, a body is not worth being injured further over a show.

It was my muscle as well. It is the muscle that allows you to lift your below the knee part of your leg upward and needs healing time. I was fairly mobile with just crutches as long as my leg didn't bend. If no bones were broken it's only a could of days before you can put weight on it, you just cannot bend it. That is what that muscle does.

After the staples were removed I had to do exercises to stretch those muscles out. Scared the hell out of me. All I could think of is I might pull to hard and seperate where it was reconnected. Everything worked fine after a while and other than a scar which I claim as a war wound the only thing that is different is that my kneecap does not match the same exact location as the other one. Still works fine though. I agree that the PT was a lot of things, but fun wasn't one of them. I was able to put weight on my leg right at the beginning as long as it was straight up and done (no bending) and crutches to take most of the weight and the brace,of course.
