Guy Fawkes night here (I hate it)

Yes...5th November again...My cats are cowering under the table frightened to death, because outside there are fireworks going off left , right & centre...Terrible stories in the news papers about teens finding it funny to tape fireworks to dogs, cats, whatever they can find, & ignite them...Cannot see the sense in celebrating the day that Mr Guy Fawkes tried blowing up the Houses of Parliament in whatever year in History it was...Just my thoughts i guess....

OMIGOSH - I have not thought of Guy Fawkes in three decades. Do they really celebrate it over there?? I have never read anything about that.

I thought that was a strange holiday when I first heard of it when I was working over in UK.

DH is English and goes on and on about trick or treating being "socially sanctioned begging." He doesn't understand it. Then we watched something on the history channel about Guy Fawkes Day and they talked about kids making effigies of Guy Fawkes and begging for "a penny for the guy." I looked at him and said, "Begging, eh?" He did admit to doing this as a child but said in his own defense that they didn't go from house to house but begged in the street!

Hopefully the fireworks will be over soon!
