Guns in the House

careful - this one could get heated. Gun ownership is as close to "political" as these boards can get now.

Really? This isn't like some kid accidentally shot someone with a gun he found lying around the house. It doesn't seem like a particularly good idea to give a kid with severe behavioral issues a 22.

I'm not a big gun fan but I was married to a cop for many years. Guns can be properly stored and children can be taught gun safety from a young age. It doesn't have to turn into a tragedy with some vigilence.

He was 10 and I don't think many 10 year olds understand the finality of shooting a gun at someone.

I think most 10 yo's DO understand that but I don't really think much of the judgement of those who gave the gun to a child with behavioral issues. The kid had problems, they knew that and they gave him a gun anyway. I agree that that doesn't make sense.

I do disagree with your original comment that, "This is why you don't keep guns in the house when you have children." It's a blanket statement about a very different situation.

Yeah, that's the moral of that story.:rolleyes1

This is why you don't keep guns in the house when you have children.

I disagree. DH and I have 10+ guns in our home. All are kept locked up in a gun safe. Ammo there as well. The only ones that know the combination to get in are DH, me, and the oldest of our four children, DS30.

ETA: The problem is when people don't know how to properly store them.

So how do you propose to preclude that problem? Given the tragedy when that problem occurs, it seems like an iron-clad solution is essential. Reliance on the good intentions and conscientiousness of people clearly hasn't worked.

Guns can be and are stored safely every day in many, many homes. We don't currently own one, but we're considering it. I have family members who do and they are locked away safely and their kids all know they're off limits unless mom or dad take them to the shooting range. I think you'd also be surprised how many of your neighbors own one. We live in an upper middle class neighborhood and many of our neighbors own weapons. Both of our sons have discussed buying one (24 and 27) and we have no issue with that either.

are you kidding- 10 year olds are in 6th grade---I think a 6th grade kid realizes when you kill someone that is it!!!
I only know one or 2 people that even own guns and they were houses my daughter was not permitted to go to-one was a cop but there was still a gun in the house and those were my rules.

Sorry, don't have an answer. Other than requiring them to be locked up. Even then, just like most other laws, irresponsible people will just not do what they are supposed to do.

And making firearms illegal is not an answer.

Do YOU have an answer???

The answer is obvious. No guns in homes with small children. Also I think 10+ guns in a home is a bit extreme.. it sounds like a militia.

You would be surprised. Additionally (and I'm not necessarily referring to the article in question) kids who shoot a gun in a rage may not necessarily be trying to kill someone but rather just hurt them. So yes I think a 10 year old could easily fire a gun at someone in attempt to hurt them out of anger not realizing that they most likely are going to kill that person.

International standards are in place to ensure that manufacturers comply with specific standards for both the safety of the products, and of the workers. Assurance that manufacturers comply is enhanced by inspections by independent authorities, paid for by the manufacturers themselves. The manufacturers, as part of asserting their right to manufacture those products, agree thereby to give such inspectors full access, even though otherwise they would not be required to allow such access.

Interesting.... how about knives? bats? pipes? Is this really what you picked up from this story?

Yep, that's me, a militia:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:! Actually, when you hunt, there are different seasons. Rifle, inline muzzleloader, black powder. These are used for big game. Then you have shotguns, we use them for turkey hunting. Multiply these types of guns by two, DH and I both hunt, and they add up quickly. Add to that what I inherited from my father when he passed away, a shotgun, a German handgun he brought back from WWII, and another handgun, and it adds up. Not that you give a rat's patooty to any of the above info, but there you have it;).

All of these are kept in a safe where only 3 people have the combination. None of which are children.

Sorry, it just sounds like you are opposed to guns. Your have the right to your opinion. I have the right to own them, and I do.

Going to work, enjoy with your thread!

Not opposed to guns at all. But I am opposed to situations where small kids start getting access to guns and blowing people away. Like Bicker said in an earlier post, people are too sloppy with guns regardless of all the countless people who are emphatic that they are careful. Situations like this happen much too often for that to be true.

Are you proposing that the government takes away yet another one of our freedoms?
