Guilt trip about going on leave!!

I think I have steam coming out of my ears so I need to vent!! There are 2 of us here at work who do the same job (for different parts of the factory). Usually we coordinate our leave so one of us is here when the other is away, to cover both jobs. Can get tricky during school holidays, with my 3 kids, and my colleague's 2 kids (he is divorced and his non-working ex insists on him having the kids half of every holidays), but usually works.

So this time I have made the ultimate mistake of taking 2 1/2 weeks off, including all of school holidays. He is not doing all of my work - I am training someone else to do most of it. But, he has not let me hear the end of it. Whingeing, making snide remarks, stressing about who is going to look after his kids, complaining about the extra workload, etc etc. I have tried to be sympathetic, I agree it's unfortunate - but honestly, I'm entitled to my leave and to spend 2 weeks with my family! But he's done nothing but make me feel guilty for taking the time off!

He was just going on about it again when I sent his contact details to someone outside the company. I'm just so over it.

Anyway - vent over!

I hate that! I'm lucky in that I don't have the sort of job that requires me to train my leave relief person, but it is so awful that your colleague can't be happy for you to have a holiday with your family - as I'm sure you would be if the shoe was on the other foot!!
The older I get the more I realise people can be funny sometimes!!!
But don't let him get to you - as you say you have earned your holiday and deserve it just as much as he does!
In a bit over a week you can forget all about him!!!

wow, sounds like he is being a big baby about it. my old manager used to do something similar to me too.



it sounds like he may be jealous that you get to go on an awesome vacation and he isn't getting the opportunity to go on one, and rather than being happy and the nice kind of jealous (like we are on here), he's being the snarky, inconsiderate and whiny kind of jealous

sucks that you have to put up with that kind of behaviour, especially at your work.

tell him to have a "magical day".....lifes too short for idjits who rain on our trips..enjoy your trip and thank god your not married to him

Your employer should be thrilled that he/she has a worker who truely cares about their workplace.
Tell your colleague to "wake up" and stop acting like a cry baby. He is an adult and sometimes adults need to do things they don't like (like WORK). In time, I'm sure it will be him waving goodbye and leaving for a few weeks of fun with you picking up the pieces!
Enjoy your family time - life is way too short to worry about self destructive souls.

I should expect nothing more from him, he is a mean and plain nasty person at times. Anyway I'm trying not to let him get to me anymore...only 4 more days at work anyway before we are off and away!!

hugs aust, similar situation for us. There are only two of us that do this job so if we are both away e.g sick etc then nothing gets done which is bearable for one day (in reality the rare time that happens I will get calls or have to do work from home because no one else knows how to do things) but not for longer. She doesn't have kids so is totally great about me taking time off in the holidays so that is cool but I am feeling sooooo guilty about taking the 2 biggest busiest weeks of the year off. But sometimes timing is just not perfect, she went to the US over the last school holidays - I sucked it up and didn't take any days off to spend with DD this time, we all survived lol and so will your colleague

A place I used to work at wouldn't allow anyone to take time off during school holidays, simply because they said it was too hard to organise people to cover

Wankers...

It was also a fight to try and get a Friday, Saturday or Monday off...

Glad I don't work there any more...
