I have been given a temporary diagnosis of Guillan-Barre syndrom. I have just spent an hour reading about it on the net, and I am scared to death of what may be to come! Anyone with experience of this here?

Diane,
((((((HUGS)))))))

I know someone with this....PM coming soon.....

One of the guys I work with came down with this in Feb/01. He is still recovering and is not back to work yet. He's in a wheelchair and has very limited use of his arms and legs. We still can't believe it's taking him this long to recover and are beginning to wonder if this is as good as it will get. I pray that your case will not be as severe. He thought he was having a mild stroke that morning (numbness one side of his face and arm) and by late afternoon was completely paralyzed and on a respirator (which lasted for over 6 months). It's been awful to watch. I don't profess to know much about it but his case has been nasty. Good luck to you. I think the effects can vary dramatically between different people but I can understand you being scared. Please let us know how you make out.

I know you have read some bad things. However I know several friends who had a short bout with it. Mild facial paralysis that was barely perceptable.

Thanks for the encouragement. I think the reason I am so scared is because I have the breathing problems. I am worried I will end up on a respirator. WDW looks pretty questionable right now!

When were you going on vacation? I hope you make a speedy and complete recovery.

No experience here personally, Diane, but I just had to give you a big {{{HUG}}} I know it sounds scary, but try to keep thinking positively. I pray that this is either mild or a wrong diagnosis.

I just posted on a Guillain-Barre board, and they told me to go to the ER imediately, and not wait for my diagnostic appointment! Now I am REALLY scared!

Oh Diane :( Do what you feel is best for you (going to ER tonight or wait). I wish I could give you good advice and some reasurrence and take away your fear. You have all of our support right now, I just wish there were more I could do.

Diane,
have you called your Dr. back???

Diane, I agree with Elaine. If going to the ER right now would be more reassuring to you than waiting until your upcoming appointment, then you should do that. I wish we could be there with you now to hold your hand.:(

I have no experience or knowledge about Guillan-Barre syndrome, but I want you to know I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers...Please keep us informed.....sending you big hugs

Hi Diane. A big {hug} for you this evening.

I do know one of the talk show hosts here in Chicago had Guillan-Barre syndrome a few years back and he is fine today. He says it was a tough road for a few months, but he is great today. As far as ER tonight, if you feel better with that, by all means go. My prayers and best wishes are with you, as are so many here on the DIS. Please let us know how you do tonight.

Big {hugs}, wish I was there to give you one in person.

Dan

Diane, I've just done a quick read-up on it and while I have no experience with it, it does seem that, for most, treatment will bring complete recovery. I'm certainly hoping and praying that this will be the case for you too.

If you think you should go to the ER, then by all means go.

We'll be keeping an eye out for you here and keeping you in our thoughts and prayers....

Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers Diane ......we are here to support you in anyway we can ....

Thanks for all the good wishes. I just spoke with the on-call Dr. and he said to stay calm and told me what to watch for. He said if I got too scared, to go to the ER, but he would have my doctor call in the morning to check on me. My best friend is also in the medical field, and she told me the same thing, so for now I am going to sit tight and try to get some rest.

I just got home from the drive-in movie. I had to check in to see what was happening. Hope you are able to get a little rest. I'll check back tomorrow.

Diane, I can only wish for a quick diagnosis & recovery & offer you GREAT BIG {{{HUGS}}}.

Best of luck with this Daine & please keep us posted.
