I vaguely remember seeing someone post a phone number of special medical services for guests. I have a strange situation and was wondering if anyone knew the number and if you think its worth my while to call.

My story. On our upcoming trip in June I will have my 2 nieces and nephew with us. My young niece was recently diagnosed with Juvenile diabetes. She's being a real trooper and she and my DB and SIL are slowly finding out how to cope. I am trying to offer support as I have been a Type I for 20-some years but they live 1,500 miles away and I don't want to interfer with her doctors orders. Bottomline is that I mangaged to get us a PS at Cindy's for breakfast during our trip. Unfortunately, the PS is for very late in the morning (9:55 am). SIL is telling me that my niece has to eat early since her morning insulin is combined to also kick in at the appropriate lunch time. I know how I can adjust my eating schedule but I don't feel comfortable messing with hers. Is it a stupid idea to call WDW and see if they could change our PS time for this tremendously busy meal? We already have a PS, I would just need to adjust the time. I trust you guys will tell me if this is way too presumptuous to even ask for.

Thanks.

I honestly don't know if it will be possible for you to change the PS... you might want to arrange for your niece to have a small breakfast ahead of time to match her meds schedule, then go to the restaurant. You can request special diets ahead of time, something to consider, and also - for kids with special needs who are not actually eating the food at character meals, you just let them know that and they will charge either an Entertainment Charge or the Infant Charge, which will be less than the cost of the kids' meal.
The resorts special reservations number is (407) 939-7807, perhaps they can help you sort it out.

If she is taking 2 insulins is it possible to take the long acting at the regular time and the regular or humalog just prior to eating? Suggest Mom talk to the doctor about adjusting for this one special event. That is what I would do. Take my NPH at the regular time and wait on the R until I was ready to eat.

You already got the phone number from teri and some expert advice from Lisa. If the phone number doesn't work or the mom doesn't want to try Lisa's advice, you could try posting on the Restaurant Board to see if anyone would be willing to trade PS times with you.

Thanks everyone!

I'll try calling and see what happens. I am hesitant to suggest rearranging her insulin schedule as they already think of me as the "evil influence".....I've been known to do radical things like taking extra insulin so I can eat a piece of birthday cake, reuse my syringes, don't swab with alcohol before injections, etc. They have just started dealing with diabetes and they are really overboard on every little detail.

If all else fails, I'll try the suggestion of switching with someone else.

Thanks again for your support of what is looking like its going to be a difficult trip.

I know they are probably doing every little detail to perfection right now but they are going to have to learn to deal with the reality of the situation. An occasional cheat is going to happen and the sooner they realize that it can be done safely the better. I've dealt with this for a good 25 years. And I also will cover carbs. In fact I carb count now rather than use the exchange system. I also reuse syringes and lancets and never use alcohol to swab before inject. Just make sure I am clean and wash my hands.
Oh and I have coordinated ccheating for students at the elementary level so they could participate in class parties and it works. A little playground time before the goodies works wonders. So do sugar free sno-cones. If you want the recipe for that just ask.

Lisa,

I would love the sugarfree sno-cone recipe.

I know DB and SIL are still very scared and careful, hopefully they will lossen up a bit by June.

Also, I love the comment about playground time before parties. This pretty much describes my trips to WDW. I know any sane, health conscious diabetic would lower their insulin with all the activity involved in a WDW vacation but not me. I love having to eat special treats because "all this walking has lowered my bloodsugar too much". My DH just grins at me.

Thanks for the support.

I would love that recipe too, please pm me or post it.

I have a 5 year old that doesn't have diabetes but a different disease that affects blood sugars and she would love to have a sno cone with some flavoring on it instead of just ice!!!!

Thanks

Melinda
