I agree with safetymom....DS 5 wore his on our trip Jan 2003. THe CM's usually called him by name, and he was absolutely amazed that the talking trash can knew his name too. But other than that, you don't "get" anything special by wearing them. It is a fun souveneir though.
when ore DDs were 4 and 7. They were amazed (esp the 4 year old) that the CM called them by name. We went to Cindy's and all of the Princesses called them by name. They loved this and this got them a lot of envious looks from other kids sitting around us. You do not get any really special but a Princess calling you by name can be pretty special for a little one! The bages make a great addition to the pins on a lanyard.
Your 10 year old may not be impressed but your 7 year old might!

The Christmas store at DTD will make up unusual names on the Guest of Honor pins while you wait-- don't know if other stores do this as well. My kids love them because CMs and characters call them by name.
I also borrowed one of their ideas for shocking my kids with the announcement of our WDW trip! I ordered carry on bags from DS and found Mickey lugagge tags at AAA, inside the tags I wrote "You're going to WDW" . Hope they enjoy the surprise!
