Hi

I've contacted DL Guest Services Special Diet Team. I'll be filling out an Allergy Dietary Request form. Can anyone give me some pros, cons, suggestions and feedback on this? I'm hoping to be able to eat my "safe foods" at a DL restaurant with my kiddos (who not on allergy food eaters).

For example: when we book at a DL restaurant (in advance and submit my allergy form, will the place we select know in advance what my foods are and therefore be available for that meal?

Thanks

As long as they have your reservation number at the time of the request. Provide that to them, and then they know when and where to expect you.

When I made my Table service reservations there was a window to identify allergens. When we arrived at the restaurants we were given a separate allergy menu, it listed what was safe, think top ten allergens etc. DD used this in tandem with the regular menu to identify what she could and could not eat safely. Sometimes she adapted the menu, i.e. Carnation Café had a Veggie Burger on the allergen menu and it was on an egg free bun , she requested the brioche from the regular menu as she is not egg allergic. On a few occasions we just had them create something for her, as she has allergens but is also a picky vegetarian so we needed to be creative. A few of the table service restaurants actually had the chef come out and speak with her, I know Carnation Café did on two separate occasions. We have been on five park trips and every trip this has gotten easier. The new menus are definitely a step in the right direction. On past trips I actually was able to email the head chef directly if I had really specific questions. On one trip we had four people with anaphylaxis and multiple allergens eating, so it took some planning. When in doubt though the chef is always willing to talk to you. Just make sure that you self-identify on your reservations, every time we checked in they already new and confirmed there was a guest with allergens.

Thank you so much! Do you recall how you were able to contact the chef? I called the dining line and it fell short of any info

Thanks again

I think in that incidence it was through guest services, but largely because there were so many allergens at that table amongst the four with anaphylaxis. All you can do is ask or maybe they can provide you with the allergen menus in advance? But if you cannot do it ahead of time do ask for the chef to come out if you have concerns, they are super accommodating.

I sent an e-mail to the special.diets@Disneyland.com about my daughters needs (we are doing the Afternoon Tea at S55), and the chef from the restaurant called me directly to discuss my needs. I thought you mentioned you had already e-mailed them though.

Correct - i did.

I was hoping to get some clarification. I have a list of 15 foods that I CAN eat. It seems like a large request for them to accommodate that and thought maybe it was easier to communicate via phone

Did you list your reservations and where you will be dining? If you pass that info along, and request the chef(s) contact you to discuss your needs, I am sure they will.

I haven't moved forward with any dining reservations yet (in case it couldn't work out with my restrictions, I didn't want to disappoint the kids).

Thanks for your guidance - I'll move forward with booking the dining and start with your suggestions

Some restaurants are better than others at dealing with allergies. Carnation Cafe was, by far, the best. The chef was knowledgeable and quickly came out to talk with us to work out a safe meal. Wine Country Trattoria, not so much. After arguing we got to talk to the chef, but the meals still came out wrong. It was a mess.

My mom is allergic to peppers (black pepper is ok, but anything else is not). We went to several places in DCA before we were finally able to get her something at Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta. It took about a half an hour to convince the chef to give her an adult portion of the kids Mac and cheese (everything else in the place has peppers somewhere in the dish).

I guess the key to my long winded post is to stand your ground and clearly explain your needs every time you eat. Don't depend on the email to have gotten your message across. The new menus are great for common allergies (nuts, eggs, gluten) but don't count on much beyond that being considered.

Excellent feedback! Thanks so much. I was considering Carnation Cafe as one of the two we may go to

You can review the various park menus online. I'm just gluten free so it's easier for me, but I usually try to figure out whether or not I can be accommodated at a restaurant based on the menu. For example, there's a place by Golden Horseshoe that is basically only battered and fried foods. I'd never even try to eat there. Once you've figured that out (if you can) then email special diets with the restaurants you'd like to eat at and your list of allergies. Not just the foods you can eat, but also what you cannot eat. They'll let you know if you can be accommodated. They ask that you do this at least (IIRC) 2 weeks before you arrive.

There are Chef's at every eating establishment (not at the food carts), when you arrive at the location you just ask to speak to the chef regarding food allergies and they will ALWAYS come out and talk to you.

Food is not prepared in advance, so you will get fresh meals cooked in a allergen friendly kitchen. You really do not want to talk to someone in advance, as the message may get mixed up between you, the order taker and the kitchen.

Disney takes food allergies very seriously. My SO LOVES going to Disney as she can eat almost everywhere, and has great meals.

If you are Celiac, download the GD Disney dining app, it is and outstanding resource for GF options.

I have a weird allergy; coconut oil. The allergy menus didn't help me much, but someone always came out to talk to me about my allergy. Sometimes it was the chef and sometimes it was the manager.

I am also allergic to coconut (in any raw form - including smell) and it makes eating a challenge sometimes. I'm coming across more and more people with a coconut allergy. That said, I have recently (like last week) switched to a GF diet due to a wheat intolerance. I'll be missing out on my favorites next trip but I'm hoping I can find things that are equally as tasty to eat. I am hoping that, as common as GF has become, We'll have lots of options.

We had the chef come to visit us each time we had a reservation where we stated an allergy at the time we made the reservation. I think you will be fine - Disney go out of their way to accommodate!
