I know what and why for a guarantee, DCL presumes a certain amount of cancellations so offers guarantees of certain Cats to cover this. It allows them to move people about to cover preferences connecting rooms etc.

Its the same as airlines, overbooking to cover no turn ups.

But has anyone who has had a guarantee ever not obtained the guaranteed category and had to settle for something lower??

Like the airlines when everyone does turn up and they have to knock you off the flight?

nope, I've only heard of guarantees having to be bumped up (not down).

airlines overbook on purpose. Cruise ships cannot overbook like an airline.

I was/am curious about this as we have a GTY on the FL to CA cruise.

Interesting that they can not over book.

So maybe we might get one of those really big suites. I doubt it but hey we can dream.

Cruise ships DO overbook. The difference is, unlike hotels, rental car companies, etc., cruise lines are not able to simply move you to another ship once you show up at the port.

When a cruise line sees that they do not expect to be able to accommodate their overbookings, they begin offering those who are already booked incentives to move to another date. Disney manages inventory so well that moving people is RARELY necessary. When they do need to move people off of a certain date, their offers are good enough that people who are able to move, do, thus creating the space they need to accommodate the guaranties.

Thank you everyone for your replies I think ''papacruise''
is most likly closest to what actually occurs, they do overbook to a certain amount knowning from past cruise experience x% of people will not turn up.

If they get to the 90/ 60 /30 day mark and see they have overdun it, they will make 'offers' the same as the airlines to cruisers.

This ensures the ships are full on all trips

I'm fairly certain I read a post on another board not too long ago that the Carnival Miracle out of Boston or Bayonne (not sure, but somewhere on the east coast) cancelled a lot of individual guarantee bookings due to overbooking. Many unhappy campers as air had already been purchased on most of them. Not sure what Carnival did to fix the problem with these cruisers since they didn't purchase air through carnival.

I hope not had a room number, upgraded and went to a GTY, so hope they do not over do it. On the PC trip from LA to Florida and it costs a lot to fly from the U

Whilst there always will be cancellations I perosnally think the two Panama trips will have a low fall out rate, they are two of a kind and now not to be repeated in 2006.

vossjemi, that happened in Baltimore, Maryland this summer with Carnival.

btw, Carnival has pulled out all of their cruises departing from Baltimore.
