Hi guys! I recently changed my cabin selection to a 5E GTY for our cruise in October. At the time of changing categories, there were no 5Es showing as available. Does this mean it is less likely that we will end up being assigned to one? Advise me oh wise ones :D

Typically, GTY assignments wind up being assigned to a room just what the category is. Sometimes they may be assigned to a higher category. Hard to say.

Full answer.

DCL, like airlines overbook categories, as thry know % amount of people, will, cancel, transfer, not cruise, etc. They are actually very good at this. They may still have some other categories open, which could be sold, or used for GTY.

They will leave thier options open for maximum sales and income.

There is a chance you could be lucky, but you are very likely to get exactly the category you booked, there is a great GTY assigned thread, read that where cruisers posted what thry got, that will give you a clear idea.

And then there was me who on my last Fantasy cruise booked an 8B GTY and got stuck with a 5E (way lower and further back than I like). :(

You were upset you got a verandah?

That low and mid? Yes. I would rather have an ocean view at the front of the ship. 5E is the category I most avoid - besides concierge.

Thanks for the replies guys! I am soooooo hoping to get assigned a 5E. We were in a 5E on our last cruise and loved it.....booked this one they were sold out and that was almost a year out. I got a good cabin tho 4E....but then the 5E GTY came available and decided to gamble......So hoping I didn't make a mistake giving up that 4E (it is gone now) I love the O/S balconies!

if you watch the cruise you want, sometimes you can see the rooms start to disappear from the available inventory. Then ups pops a GTY and then I book. I booked a 6A GTY pretty much knowing there weren't many if any, received an upgrade to a 5E. 90% of my GTY's become upgrades. But I watch all the time.

contact DCL and inform them you do not request an upgrade, if possible.

Part of the deal with GTY rooms is that you agree to take any room assignment in your paid category or higher. If you are at all picky about room selection, then GTY is not for you.

That was how I understood it as well. That you could not put a Do Not Upgrade on your reservation if it was GTY.
